Thank you for this! As a student teacher all I have ever had practice with is the super detailed “official” lesson plans and we have never focused on lesson plans for small group instruction or guided reading/writing. Can’t wait for you to tell us some more about Rime Magic :)
Hello sweet friends! Please leave any questions you have about my planning or guided reading in general! I want to make a video for those of you who keep asking me what it is or are just curious and want to know a little more about it ♡ xx
I have been watching you since the classroom septup. Im a new preschool teacher from Honduras, so English is second language for my kiddos. Tomorrow is going to be their first day and i just wanted to say: Thank you. I have take so much ideas from your channel from decorations to classes. So keep going making these videos. I mean i know that im never going to achieve what you have. We have so little resources and if we have they are really expensive.
When my older child (now adult) started 1st grade she came home with phonics flash cards. She had to say the sound of each letter and then blend the sounds into words. It was hard and time consuming. After a few rounds, my pre-schooler, who had been watching, started shouting out the words instantly. He knew all of them. He had memorized them by sight. I discovered he could "read" many words like Barney and dinosaur that he saw regularly on TV, and he could even recognize them when they were upside down! However, when I pulled out the at bat cat words a few weeks later, I discovered he had forgotten them. The other child could figure out any simple word, even if she had never seen it before. The older child and I spent the summer after 1st grade, going through the old Hooked on Phonics program that involved reading lists of words with progressively difficult phonics patterns.. The 2nd grade teacher quickly moved her to a seat next to a bookcase full of Nancy Drew novels, and she devoured them. I used to scour award winning book lists for her. By 6th grade she was plowing though novels like "Jane Eyre" which has a very sophisticated vocabulary. Back to the younger child. who could recognize words by sight. As a pre-schooler, he would continuously learn new words but forget old words and I realized we were only treading water and not actually making any progress until I taught him the letter sounds and blending. Then he became a reader too. He didn't need elaborate instruction on comprehension because he heard people speaking to him all day. He also liked to listen to books on tape.. Our brains are wired to learn words and comprehend them naturally by hearing speech. They aren't wired to learn to read letters on the page naturally. There is ample scientific evidence from eye tracking studies and MRI's that prove that the 3 cueing system doesn't work well in comparison to other methods. Figuring out words from context should be the last thing kids do when they can't sound out the words, and pictures......chapter books don''t have picture clues so its not a good strategy to encourage. I don't know what a teacher is supposed to do since the books they are given are designed for memorization and guessing.
I loved this. Guided Reading is something I really want to work on! How do you review the sight words? I've just been using flashcards, but I feel like I would want to change it up sometimes, but I'm not sure what else I could do with it.
I have a list of words that I have gone over for each group. I review three each time I see them. I say the word, they write the word, and that's how I check them :) If they don't get it, I quickly reteach and make sure to review it again the next day. I introduce one word every time I meet with them as long as they get the previous word I teach them. I'll make a GR video soon!
I used to hate guided reading when I was a student in Elementary School! 😆 I think I actually will enjoyed doing this If I move down to elementary school from Middle school in the far future!
Hey Shannon! I was actually surprised that there are a lot of schools out there who don't do "guided reading" (full-on, at least). I'm glad this video was helpful! I planned to film more, but it didn't happen. Hopefully I can at some point! Thank you so much!
Hi! Sorry for my english😅 I'm french teacher and I like your guided reading. Where I can find this please? And what did you do with the Sight Word ? I really like to see how you organize your classroom, your teaching. Maybe you think it's simple, it's an evidence but for me (and I'm sure for Someone else too) it's interesting and I can take some ideas for my classroom. So Thank you for that 😊
Such a great video! Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it, but where did you get your lesson plan template for the two books? Is that something that you made or a different resource? I love how it has the space for two books!
Being new to first grade this was very helpful. Do you know where I can find a list of comprehension strategies, teaching points, and word study commonly used in first grade?
How do you create and change the scheduling for guided reading with 5 groups? What are the other students doing during the other centers and how hard is it to create a schedule?
Loved your video! Do you all use F&P to level students? If so, what level do they typically enter into your classroom on and what level are they required to leave on? 🙂
Hello! Yes! They are supposed to enter First Grade on hopefully D/E (but many of mine did not). They drop over the summer..And we are supposed to get them reading on a level J by the end of the year!
