Back in 1984 my father took me to the Paul E. Garber facilty in Silverhill Maryland. Its where the smithsonian kept all of the planes they could not display on the mall and the restoration projects. After seeing all the restored planes, including a Hawker Hurricane straight from 1940 We go to a huge Quanset Hut hanger in the back lot. We enter and it is dimly lit. I look over to my right and there on the floor is a Focke Wulf fuselage which is the one now on display at Dulles. Then as we go farther in I look over and directly next to me to the left there is a huge silver round object. I stand back and I recognize it is a B-29. I then notice the cockpit, then look down and I see the words "Enola Gay." I cant beleive I have the most famous plane in history right in front of me! I take my right hand and place it on the name knowing the significance of this plane. I went to visit the Enola Gay at Dulles about 6 years ago with my son. Its now totally rebuilt and on display away from any hands that would want to touch it.

I visited America with my son in 2019 - I made it a priority to see a space shuttle as it was a great memory of my childhood seeing the Columbia launch for the first time. When you walk in onto the mezzanine and see the SR71 with the Shuttle in the background it was quite emotional 😊

This facility feels like magic. So many things that you literally can’t see anywhere else in the world. The Enola Gay too! Standing in front of it is an incredible experience. To be standing within reach of a plane that dropped a bomb that heavily shaped 20th century and especially now.

I think back in the decades I was a regular at Silver Hill Facility where the Smithsonian was originally a ton of these aircraft I climbed through personally including the Enola Gay. This was prior to any restorations. As a young pilot I totally got the history of these birds and knew them well. I wanted to be a docent ( tour guide) but the older people were against it and made no bones about it. I knew Mr Paul Garber well back then, he was such a gentleman. My favorite was Kt. Brookes who hung around the Spad as it was HIS Spad from WW1. He loved that bird. Got to meet people that you read in the history books such as Paul Tibbetts, Tony LeVier, Bob Morgan just to name a few. My grandmother is in the book Women in Aviation. Florence Parlett’s. Airplanes are in our family blood.

The Enola Gay, did not go directly to the Smithsonian. I saw the Enola Gay for the first time in 1972, at the Sandia Atomic Museum. It was in a compound beside the main building, and not only was it in pieces, but it looked derelict to the point that I wondered if it was ever going to be re-assembled and put on display. I am grateful to see that it was restored, as it has such an important place in aviation history.

The B-17 you talk about briefly at 3:46 is the “Shoo Shoo Shoo baby” which used to be on display at the National Museum of the US Airforce in Dayton Ohio, she was taken off display in 2018 when the Memphis Belle was finished being restored and put on display , the museum did a trade with the Smithsonian to give them “Shoo Shoo Shoo baby” in exchange for the B-17D “The Swoose”, the engines, landing gear and a few other smaller pieces of “Shoo Shoo Shoo baby” are still in Dayton as of recently

I couldn't possibly pick a favorite out of that collection...however...I used to work on the venerable CH-46E Sea Knight while I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan during the 80s and 90s...that helo, as ugly as it is, holds a special place for me. I also liked the Bleriot as I have an affinity for extremely old, antique aircraft.

This museum is connected to IAD ( Washington Dulles International Airport). I lived in the DC area for 27 years, so I went on field trips here several times. At that time the “ Enterprise” sat where the space shuttle Discovery now sits. One interesting thing I noticed on one field trip was the leading edge of the “ Enterprise” left wing was removed. I didn’t know this at the time, but from what I can remember, it was removed to be used in the investigation into the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia. The playground attached to the school I was at was literally under the final approach paths for Dulles northern runways ( 19L, 19C, 19R), so I had planes flying very low over my head all day long. They were often low enough, I could see the lower beacon light reflecting off the fuselage.

Every country, well almost every country in the world, has these wonderful museums, scrap heaps, and fields full of what was once the last thing in military machines. Ships, planes, rockets, and tanks, all slowly rotting away. In the meantime, the brightest and the best among us are spending endless amounts of resources, brains, and know-how, on creating even more effective ways of killing each other. One day, when we grow up and start trusting each other instead of being afraid of each other it might change. Just imagine what the work would be like.

Happy New Year Paul 😊 I've been so close but never made it inside....once had an overnight stopover in Dulles, stayed in a hotel over road, no time to sightsee. I must go back.......

First time I went, I was on the phone with my wife. I walked In the door and literally cried. My wife thought something was wrong, it was all I could do to say. I’m just happy.

Your video was in my suggested feed on RU-vid and gave it a watch. Absolutely loved the video of the incredible pieces of history in the air and space. I hope to be able to visit it one day. Thank you for all the hard work on putting the video together and sharing it with everyone. Looking forward to watching some of your other videos. You have a new subscriber with me...
