@@jamesdaley1674 I hope that if Josh and Dj are putting it off for so long, Dj's gonna be on when Jimmy comes back, as a thank you/passing the torch back to Jimmy
This set truly looks fantastic. Flavor, power level, and nostalgia all come into play. Although, my hopes and dreams of a Jumpstart style snapcaster in this set were dashed.
Yea that card is super sweet, although it’s nothing like gaining a small board presence with a creature. Don’t get me wrong I know it is greedy to want a second snap style creature, but I just wanted my casual friends to have access to a financially viable option.
Anthony Madden, I was more referring to standard and modern. While I agree the legends of the set are average or below average at best we still get shocks and some pretty fun cards to add to existing decks. I just think we are finally seeing that turning point in development/set quality.
There are some nice interactions that Underrealm Lich has: First, in combination with Sylvan Library, you get to look at the top 9 cards of your library every draw step and you get to keep 3 of them without paying any life because you didn't actually draw cards of the Sylvan Library. Second, this card is just super busted in The Gitrog Monster. If you would draw 1 single card, you instead look at the top 3, place one into your hand and the others into your graveyard. But with The Gitrog Monster out, you get to draw another card (aka look at the top 3) if any of the 3 cards you looked at was a land (that you then send to the graveyard). And because your average Gitrog Monster deck has more than 33 lands in it, you can theoretically draw/mill your entire deck of a single card drawn. You also cannot deck yourself out because the draw of The Gitrog Monster is turned into 'look at the top 3 cards...' by the Underrealm Lich 🙌
You know what else you can do with Divine Visitation? Use Requiem Angel. When 1 Angel dies, another one comes in it'S place :P And with Token Doublers, that means you get more Angels when ever another ends up dying.
Shank40 want em to make it more Evil? Because of this Combo, you get a new Angel when ever an older one dies, that means if you have a Permanent with a Sacrifice ability, you can then sacrifice the token infinitely, meaning if you have something like Blood Artist, you can drain your opponents forever.
There is good stuff in this set, some of my best use case ideas where: Izoni, not that great a commander, but in Jarad's 99 really awesome. Chance for Glory, Aurelia Commander (old one) and Najeela just want this, one turn is a lot to them. Also, you can as Instant play this in response to a board wipe and have a turn with all your creatures while no one has blockers? Dawn of Hope wins flavor and art for me. It might replace Well of Lost Dreams in my Ayli deck, just for the added Printer and lower entry cost. Not as efficient, but this deck likes to spent spare mana over multiple turns anyway. Divine Visitation makes my Ghave-has-to-many-good-5-drops Problem only greater, he might as well become a Enchantment Commander by now. Experimental Frenzy works great with Rocks and Paradox Engine (as most things do), your card advantage is only limited by your mana and the amount of lands you play or tuck away. Also Omnath might want this. I'm quite ok with this set :)
I just dont know why it is so hard for them to make an actual selesyna elf commander (WHY EMMARA MAKE SOLDIERS NOT ELVES) or to make a legend that says "creatures you control have mentor"
Really good and thorough review. A lot of other youtubers just blaze through mentioning cards from older sets that newer players might not know. Also you explain in detail why cards are good instead of assuming it's obvious to everyone.
Watching hundreds of hours of MtG gameplay, recording data, and then running numbers on all that data? As a stats major, that sounds awesome! I know it's a long shot, but if you folks ever do something like this again, I'd love to contribute. (Edited because I forgot to mention that I have a degree in statistics, and I'm not just some rando. Well, I suppose I still am just some random commenter, but you get what I mean.)
I know im asking randomly but does any of you know a way to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost my login password. I love any tips you can give me
@Kendrick Reign Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out atm. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Aurelia can get pretty big if you abuse other mentor cards. Target her with the mentor. Then you can slowly make a wider board go tall. Overall pretty decent card and should be fun to build around
I'm a bit more of a fan of Tajic, due to the protection it gives and the sweet art. I'll probably give them both a shot at the helm of the deck I plan to build.
Jeffrey Krismer I feel like tajic would be better in the 99 since while he has decent protection he doesn't really do much more than that. I feel like Aurelia would be more versatile at the helm
Jonathan Durham: I feel like I shouldn't have to work that hard to make my commander better. Think about all the slots you have to use up to make that mentor scenario you described happen. I suppose her raw stats, if she targets herself, is fine if you're dealing commander damage and I suppose you could just put swords on her, but overall she doesn't seem that exciting. I huge step down from original Aurelia.
Spells that you may want to copy with Expansion/Explosion, Debt to the Deathless (other spells with X in their mana cost most are CMC 4 or less.), Cyclonic Rift (Overloaded spells are overloaded on the stack but CMC is still the original cost.), Rite of Replication (Any CMC 4 or less Kicked Spell.). I could go on but I'm sure this opens up ideas.
DJ went to court to apply for a job and instead asked the lady out because he realised creating magic content is greater than any job you can get at a court
Why, he has a hot date with mr. Lee Kwai right there! Basically a candle-lit dinner on Ravnica already! Can't think of a better way to spend the evening than to discuss the upcoming Wizards of The Coast product releases together with another beautiful man. Gets me all hot and bothered! No homo.
The thing you do in limited is that you place the split-card on the left side of your grip, so that is in like a 20 degree angle, so that it is easier to read.
I would love to see DJ, Shawn Main, The Prof and Josh duke it out on an episode of Game Knights. Might be goofy, might be intense but it would be amazing to watch.
Thing of note, Ral CAN hit to the face (any target). Also, I often hear y'all talk about how ulti's need to win you the game, but isn't the opposite better? If a Planeswalker's Ulti doesn't win you the game, your opponents are going to prioritize damaging it lower than they would if it did.
Matthew Peterson it’s an interesting bit too one that partially worried me and also gives me some hope. With that info about it’ll be very reasonable to assume decks will quickly become even more Homogeneous. That being said cards that show a lower win percentage could in theory lower in overall price thus saving casual players more money. Either way I’m excited
I don't know, I'm less hyped for this. I much prefer the brewing and casual nature of this format. The idea of trying to put to rest and solve what is the 'best' deck and exactly what cards to go in to it actually kinda upsets me. Also this is going to take a long time to be in the makeing, I know they we shouting about 'hundreds' of games, but that realistically speaking is a very limited data set when we are talking about something as complex as edh. To get relevant data it is going to take an awefully long time! From hundreds of games are you going to know the win % of Atraxa versus a Squee Voltron deck? Probably not. I wish them the best of luck with this, I really do, but the Idea of solving what cards are the best in decks kinda upsets me for this casual format
Huge fan of your guys' show! I get to watch it more than I get to play, which is nice because it keeps my mind going on EDH which I appreciate. Keep up the awesome work, I'm excited to see this round of Game Knights! I'm excited to see some Etrata decks!
Quick correction on Thousand-Year Storm: the copies you create do not count towards how many times you'd copy the next spell (because they aren't technically "cast", they just pop into existance on the stack). Meaning, 1st spell resolves just once, 2nd spell resolves twice, 3rd spell resolves three times, etc. Still super fun, but it's not as extreme as Josh put it.
chromatic lantern is pretty nice if you are running such things as glacial chasm, cabal coffers, maze of ith, fetchlands for shuffle effect. I feel that was an effect worth mentioning
I am honestly loving this set so far. Some very interesting cards, awesome abilities, and sweet, sweet art. Cannot wait to get my hands on some of these cards!!!!
I have to say even in limited thousand year storm is an amazing card. I played a deck called TWO thousand year storm at the prerelease with only goblin electromancers in it. It was incredible especially with jump-start, being able to throw away a land for a card that combos off is incredible.
In comparing the lockets to Hedron Archive, you have to consider mana lost tapping both artifacts. This applies to Hedron Archive as well which makes it more like 4 mana draw 2 compared to 5 mana draw 2, but the cost of archive being one higher subsidizes the cost. They are about even.
Get hyped!!! Welcome back everyone! I'm your commentator on the Commandzone Video! GRN is going to be amazing stay tuned for thier amazing episode I helped in no way on except for hyping up the comment section!
Omnispell adapt, Training Grounds, and Crab Umbra/Freed from the real. You can now cast any instant/sorcery spell for essentially 2b. Pair that with something like Experimental Frenzy or Future Sight and bam.
Mentor actually snowballs really easily it is made for equipment based strategies. Tajic works well as a +1/+1 counter centered Boros commander. Boros Challenger & Tajic e.g. can snowball each other up by pumping the challenger for 2RW. But the best trick would be cards like: Ring of Thune/Valkas or Banshee's Blade There is also the option to switch an equipment between mentors to get a steady growth each turn. Not to mention that there are a lot of +1/+1 counter Tribal Soldires (Ainok Bond-Kin, Abzan Falconer, Cenn's Tactician, Elite Scaleguard) and with vigilance on two Soldire Tribal cards Tajic could make a wonderful commander centered arround Soldires, Mentor, Equipments & Damage based Fieldwhipes (Chandra's Ignition). Oh and among Soldires there is also the creature that grants +2/+2 and indestructible you mentioned
People always ask for more card draw in white, but the issue is that white can answer almost anything. It can spot-removal any nonland permanent, and board wipe any permanent type. The only thing it doesn't really have is interaction with instants/sorceries, but there are very few that can win you the game without a board presence. White also has a strong creature presence, with cards that make more than one creature and strong fliers. If white then also gets good card draw, then with one color alone you can always have an answer to anything your opponents do. Every color has weaknesses to encourage combining colors, and white's is card draw. White does occasionally get card engines like Mentor of the Meek and Saram, but these are designed so they only draw you cards if you've built your deck to meet a specific criteria, leaving less room in your deck to have answers to your opponent's permanents.
Hey guys, keep up the great content and thank you for introducing me to card kingdom, I just bought all the missing pieces for my new atraxa commander deck
Yes the soldier tokens have lifelink for the first time. i'm loving this set and I think it will make for an extremely diverse and interesting Standard. As far as Commander goes, well any set that abounds in gold cards is a Commander deck brewer's paradise!
Btw, JLK, the sundial mnemonic trick would only work for a turn, because it says "at the beginning of the next end step", meaning that sure, you can skip your own end step, but then your opponent gets an end step and those cards return to the graveyard.
Jumpstart is the definitely the best ability i think in GRN, it helps out by adding cards to the yard similar to surveil and the cmc typically won't go up like flashback costs do. Also Josh if you see this, my playgroup meets quite often and will be able to help with statistics if that would help - I'll also reach out via twitter. Goodluck with the new projects!
The Prof had some Lazov combos with the ooze.😂 Also you can use Zedru to give the experimental frenzy to a deck that can't make red and then they are stuck. Also Gitrog monster with underelm litch.
The thing about Niv-Mizzet, Parun is that it marries the two big strategies we see from Izzet in storm and wheels and compresses them under one umbrella. That in itself could lead to a unique type of deck that would make Parun stand out.
Exactly. Finally someone says it other than me. He's the best of both worlds and can make some insane decks. The 6 colored mana makes it a little difficult but with just a two land base it isnt too bad with some fetches or dual lands. Even budget fetches and duals. He's by far my favorite commander released in a long time.
The interesting thing about aurelia is that she is a work around to the diminishing returns from mentor, just put the 2/0 on a another creature with mentor to drop a counter on aurelia then next turn put it on aurelia to drop a counter on the other mentor
The new Aurelia is a Mentor engine, she can give the +2/+0 to the largest mentor creature, and because she's attacking, she can get a mentor counter from one of the 3/3s you have. Aurelia I think is the premier mentor commander and when you combine it with tokens from previous boros builds, you could get a super agressive deck with some burn to stave off blockers.
Which set do you think would be more fun to draft, domiaria or guilds of ravnica? Ill get a booster box for christmas to draft with some friends but I dont know which one to pick.
I'm super excited for Underrealm Lich! It combos so well with Gitrog Monster! I mostly play Golgari/Sultai decks so this entire set is a gold mine for me!
In my Card analysis document for Guilds of Ravnica, i note some EDH potential cards that you forgot to mention : 1) Venerated Loxodon : potential 4/4 for free that pump our army 2) Creeping Chill : A Blood Tithe for free in Sidisi v1 or things like that, should be tested even if the effect is only once and not that great, it remains free. 3) Electrostatic Field : a worse thermo-alchemist is still great because you want both in a deck like Yidris, Kess... 4) Pelt Collector : it can grow really big for a one mana creature so for me it will see some plays(Saskia, Ezuri...) 5) Portcullis Vine : Arcades, the Strategist gonna love it! :) 6) Vivid Revival : humm, maybe(but i think we already have better option but that's not so bad in EDH) 7) Firemind's Research : i think it's way too slow but in a deck that play 40 instants of sorceries, it could become a good source of CA 8) Glowspore Shaman : a 3/1 for 2 that selfmill 3 cards and sometimes gives us a land on top to land drop next turn is good(less than Satyr Wayfinder but 3 power can help sometimes) 9) I think you understimate the other split cards : - DIspersal is a Recoil-like for each opponent so that's not so bad. - Invent can gives you access to sort of a combo by tutoring an instant and a sorcery directly into your hand. - Resurgence is not Waves of Aggression but it remains interesting and more polyvalent. To conclude, Guilds of Ravnica is really nice, the only flow is that the new legendaries are not really sexy(even if Lazav looks pretty strong for a combo deck).
Just want to point out, Menagerie does a very good job of comboing in the types of decks running persist combos. Something like Viscera Seer/Carrion Feeder + Melira/Anafenza/Vizier of Remedies + Kitchen Finks, or similar, is a nice combo you can dig up with this card, and those cards all play fine on their own in this deck. Should have plenty of targets in that type of deck.
That Divine Visitation has me PUMPED! My Mirri go wide tokens says hello, nice to meet you! My husband's Darien deck is going to want it...my Krav and Regna deck is going to be bloody terrifying when I get two 4/4 angels a turn. I'm so sold. Also shocks, because shocks are great
I think the Boros legendary is seriously getting underrated, just her and one other mentor and you can use her second ability to add a 1/1 counter every turn, add in the white buff spells and you could very quickly find yourself facing a high power flyer with trample and another potentially big threat in the other mentor...add in the enchantment that makes all tokens 4/4 angels with vigilance and run token strategies along side this and your creatures would very quickly become a massive threat, especially when you have a new split card that can make you 3 tokens that’d potentially all become 4/4s It’s a deck I might have to build aha
Is "a high power flyer with trample" an actual threat though? Because it... really doesn't feel like it. The old Aurelia offered a ton of combo tricks on top of doubling /all/ your creatures' damage output, and that's an absurdly higher ceiling than "+2/0 and maybe some keywords", which is a ceiling it took you approximately a sentence to reach and then we diverted into token strategies that aren't actually good with the new Aurelia.
So I made an Aurelia commander deck, and while I admit that yes it has to be aggressive, I have had some amazing games where I get a couple of one or two drops really fast, and then by like turn 3 bring her out and start mentoring them until I can't, and then use her ability on them. I had a 6-4 healers hawk with vigilance on turn 7 one time. I took the deck apart to rebuild another deck but i'm a boros person so I really liked her as a card.
Sounds like a great data mining project! I have played in different countries and with very different playgroups and I wonder if there are any geographical-cultural effects underlying the very different ways of playing and enjoying multiplayer EDH I have witnessed so far... all the best for those who will score the games. Thanks for another great episode.
Trostani´s last effect is awesome. if you can protect her, she can hold back cards like Rise of the Dark Realms or any other effect that steals stuff in blue and black. I have a few of those effects in my Temur-Chaos-Deck and it is hilarious.
Mnemonic Betrayal will return the cards even if you have an end the turn effect, it refers to the next end step rather than specifying the turn it's played
i do have a hard time with the assessment that ass trophy is better than anguished unmaking. i think the exile effect of anguish and the non ramp(i'd rather give them life than land Swords over path) effect make it superior most of the time in commander. i do think ass trophy is good, but not "better" than AU. if possible i would play both :D
I'm putting Experimental Frenzy in my Xantcha Curse deck. I'm going to use it like a mini lantern control. 1. Tutor for harmless offerings. 2. Play Experimental Frenzy 3. Cast Harmless Offerings 4. Play Lantern of Insight 5. Play Codex Shredder 6. Profit!
min 29:45 - before an opponent creatures dies if you transform lazav, the multifarious into lazav, dimir mastermind, previously put in your graveyard, then you can transform it into their creature.
most of the time i don't remmeber anyones names, but when he said "mr. infect" i knew exactly who it was. i'm so glad when i got into this channel like 2 months ago i went back and watch those vids.
The errata on Chance for Glory explicitly states that the indestructibility is indefinite. I guess if you're only going to have one more turn (unless you played a Platinum Angel or happen to run Angel's Grace) they don't mind it being indefinite. It is important to note that only the creatures on the field at resolution become indestructible.
I’m not that excited about the Legends from this set, but Divine Visitation and Dawn of Hope have convinced me to finally build Darien, King of Kjeldor.
Trostani's last ability was added on for standard reasons. They were afraid hostage taker might be too strong against selesnya, so they added the homeward path ability.
That's all you had to say about Divine Visitation? Yes I'm excited about this card going into my Edgar Markov deck. Making angels on evert vampire cast!!
Speaking of Homeward Path, and the same could be asked about Trostani Discordant, it says all creatures they own, so does that mean you can steal the tokens created by hunted creatures since it created them?
Well, underrealm lich + gitrog monster. Basicly infinite combo. I love the lockets because i'm a big fan of cards that do both card draw and ramp, even though the rate is not to good. Thanks for the review, waiting for game knights!
36:00 What about Iroas, he protects all combat damage. Together, they prevent all damage to all other creatures, then you can also give Tajic indestructible, hexproof, or shroud
In some ways I feel the Ral Zarek emblem is good, because it is not so immediately gaming winning like Vraskas. People won’t see it as much as a threat as some others, and you may actually get a chance to do the ultimate.
"This is a strict upgrade to Harmonic Sliver, unless you're caring about the other slivers, I guess." Why else would you ever run Harmonic Sliver unless it's explicitly a Slivers deck and you therefore really care about other slivers?
Mission briefing is nasty in a mill deck. With the right combination (and a bit of luck) you can put it down, cast again, saying, Glimpe the unthinkable from the graveyard and that means 20 card from opponents' libraries to their graveyards. Just figure out what can happen if there's a Consuming Aberation on the battlefield... Sweet 😈
Sorry guys, but an early game Chromatic Lantern in a 4 or 5 color deck can vastly improve the efficiency of your mana base as well as enable Jodah and Fist of Suns in an almost peerless way (aside from Composite Golem/Nym's Deathmantle but that costs more than 3 times the mana). At the very least, the makes the mana base for my 4 and 5 color decks cost thousands less, even more if I am in blue and/or red where I can easily tutor up low cost artifacts.
Doom Whisperer is being WINDMILL SLAM'd into my Muldrotha Deck.. I'll probably squeeze in Plaguespreader, too. (Beast Whisperer is also amazing for Druid Tribal.)
I'm in on Vraska, but only because one of my pet decks is Slimefoot, the stowaway, and she feels built for it. she'll be surrounded by tokens, both to protect her, and as fodder for her +2... and then said swarm when she ultimates becomes.. well an instant and constant problem. but i agree, shes far more niche
Chromatic Lantern offers a lot more utility than just being a Manalith. It lets you navigate around things like Mana Confluence's loss of life cost in the late game when you may be low on life, or Forgotten Tomb's damage. It also protects you from Bloodmoon effects. EDIT: Divine Visitation + new Emmara + some enchantment or equipment that lets her tap for free + Intruder Alarm for infinite Angels. Ugh.
There are a LOT of cards you are saying are almost good enough for Commander but not quite. Do you feel that they are developing Brawl support and that is the power level they are shooting for?
Don't think the lich got its deserved hype... With cards like sylvan library you dig 9 deep and you don't pay the life for the card as you never 'drew' them....also fun to note that you can't be milled out whilst you have this out, as once again you never actually draw cards you just look at your library
I have a Purphoros Goblin tribal...yeah it murders people sooooo hard. Legion Warboss is great in the deck, can confirm. Also, I have a Kess deck that uses Thousand-Year Storm, and that card is dirty.
I think if Graveyard doesn't matter Scry is a LOT better than Surveil. The important detail is that with Scry if you choose Bottom of Library, your opponent doesn't get to know what it was.
Gruesome Menagerie can grab: - Gravecrawler - Wayward Servant - Nantuko Husk If you have Rooftop Storm in play (if youre playin zombie tribal, you're gonna be tutoring for this), menagerie = I win.
dawn of hope could be used with lyra dawnbringer with divine visitation for some interaction and crazy tokens , also the armor in the art is similar to the dawn of hope selesnya armor on "Dawn" haha
Another question, which would be insane to think about (and I hope it works... IF it works): If I activate Chance for Glory, and then got Resurgence x2 in hand (activating one each round due to Chance of Glory's second turn), and the original Aurelia on the board. Could I get 6 combat rounds over 2 rounds? Because such a combo would be fun insanity for sure... XD
the red enchantment that locks your hand but can play off the top is dope, and the white enchantment that draws cards after gaining life is amazing. and both ate simple designs that should have been made to balance blue in the beginning. but what can you do.
