Hello random stranger! I know I'm a bit late to the party, but better late than never! So as requested; here are my thoughts on Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio! oh btw, THANK YOU FOR 50,000 SUBSCRIBERS. UNREAL. This is getting pretty serious, not gonna lie. I'll try to upload more often I promise lol but THANK YOU SO MUCH for stopping by and showing your support, it means a lot ♥Hope you enjoyed your stay, have a great day and a great life!
There are some Movie-Review Channals out there but i only watch your reviews. I dont care about which movie you review. I watch your content cause i like the way you do and i like your voice and your accent :)
The pinecone surviving the explosion (but not Carlo) is the most realistic part! Trust me, I saw pine trees burn in terrible forest fires: the pinecones always survive. Always. They just hang on the carbonized branches, almost pristine. Some species are even fire resistant (to a degree) and just "jump off" the tree when it catches fire.
@@marcel7734 It widely depends on the species, some are built to open up and "pop off" during fires, and transform into (fairly dangerous) far-traveling projectiles to save the seeds. And while pine resin (and pinewood, indeed) is fairly flammable, the pinecone itself is going to mostly survive unless you literally put it in a campfire or something.
The Movie definitely got darker then I thought but I definitely prefer this over all the pinocchio films we got last year the stop motion was phenomenal
FYI, the Italians weren't Nazis; Nazis were Germany's version of fascism, Italian fascist were just called fascist. And it's not called the Hitler salute, but the fascist salute, originating in Italy along with fascism.
You ever heard of Austrofascism? That was a classical fascist inspired movement by Engelbert Dollfuss and Kurt Schuschnigg in Austria that opposed the Nazis (viewing them as unchristian), so much so that Hitler would have Dollfuss killed over it.
My only "complaint" is nothing happened between Pinocchio and Candlewick after the training camp was blown up. It would have been better if they reunited back in the village and the two friends went exploring the world after Pinocchio's family died.
The only thing I remember from the original story was that as soon as Pinocchio is born he crushed jim cricket with a wooden mallet, and there’s a really funny drawing that went with it, it looks like anyone who sees a spider on the wall and tries to kill it with a shoe.
The original story was a way for the author to confess exactly how much he hated kids, so he put Pinocchio through all sorts of torture - hanged - sold into slavery - sold into slavery (x2) - the two people that he valued in life died - had his limbs torn off - got scammed - got swallowed by a fish - died saving his father but then he got reincarnated by the fairy into a real boy for his one good action of saving his father, so... happy ending?
@@theincrediblyawesomeone2212 isn't this book considered one of the first books made for kids and was in a kids magazine? Seems like you should get someone who actually likes kids
I do think it deserved its Oscar win because of how complex the creative process was, as well as how long and hard Del Toro pushed for it to happen. That being said, Puss In Boots 2 did offer some tight competition due to its stylistic visuals and entertainment value for its target audience.
"How complex the creative process was" - yeah no, I don't think it offered that much of a challenge when all the source material was already there. Del Toro just crashed Pinocchio against Pan's Labyrinth and called it a day - there was no groundbreaking innovation story-wise and the movie feels a bit all over the place at times. It's a Del Toro movie, and quite honestly, far from one of his best. Puss in Boots 2, instead, was not just visually compelling or entertaining for "its target audience" (oh c'mon lol) as you said, but it offered an original (mind you: *actually original*, not just the same story with some extra surreal shenanigans and a gritty paint coat like this Pinocchio) and interesting retake on classic tales, a compelling story, solid characters, and villains you can take seriously, unlike many modern animation movies.
@@0Anubi0 when he said "how complex the creative process was" I think he was talking about the stop motion, now I do believe puss and boots 2 deserved the Oscars instead, I think it's better that Pinocchio got the oscar instead of turning red
“Oh, Jesus, you seem so coooool! I hope we get to meet one day :D” “Why don’t we get to meet NOW, motherfucker?! WHEEEEEEEE-“ That part had me in tears XD
Something I really liked about GDT’s Pinocchio is that it changed the original’s lesson. Pinocchio’s lesson is usually “go to school, never lie, and be good” to become human, but GDT said “humans aren’t perfect, but they should appreciate life and everyone in it.” That and I cried pretty hard at the end, like they really want to hit the mortality part home huh 😭 Personally, I do think this deserves over PIB based on its animation alone. There are just so many crazy shots that really elevate stop motion to the next level- like the camera work on Carlo swinging and Gepetto hitting a balloon around. Stop motion is a very underappreciated medium of animation so I’m always thrilled when awards brings it mainstream attention 💖
THANK YOU i was looking for this comment! this one definitely deserved it! stop motion is way harder to do as amazingly as GDT did it. im not undervaluing PIB and all the hardwork they did in animation pov in any way, im just saying that pinocchio rightfully deserved it more that PIB
I definitely agree that Puss in Boots should have won the Oscar. I was kinda disappointed when Pinocchio won tbh, though I loved Guillermo Del Toro’s acceptance speech.
It's honestly really strange, I can't root for just one and I can't be happy when one wins. I loved Puss in Boots 2, I loved The Sea Beast (seen in background of one clip in the video), and I loved Del Toro's Pinocchio! They all deserve praise and appreciations. They all should get rewards!
I agree, The thing I'm not satisfied with GDT Pinocchio was the ending because it makes me feel like Geppeto never really came to terms with his grief.
OH MY GOODNESS THESE VIDEOS ARE SO GOOD!!!! You are so talented and funny, I'm bingeing all of your videos!!!! Keep up the amazing work, my friend, you have a bright future as a comedian and movie reviewer!!!!!
After Del Toro's Pinocchio, Are you ready to see the Super Mario Bros. Movie? Because I'm ready for you to watch it & what are your thoughts on it! :) I can NOT wait for that video.
This movie is just wild and I genuinely love it for that. It’s so much nicer having something as different and unique as this in the modern age where “safety” and “conformity” are the running ideas.
I really love the design of Pinocchio. It make him look more like a wooden puppet instead of some magic plastic doll. At least it’s better than the Pinocchio that doesn’t have the nose mechanic. And for a orthopterophobic person (fear of grasshoppers) I surprisingly love the crickets design.
I've seen Del Toro's Pinocchio, and I've also Read the original book by Carlo Collodi. The movie does try new things with the story, which it succeeds in trying, this is my opinion. So althought the plot is different, there are nods to the original book. Like with Gepetto's son being named Carlo, after the author of the book. Pinocchio's feet getting burned, which also happens in the book after he gets Gepetto arrested. Then there's the four black rabbits, who are also in the original book, though they don't carry Pinocchio away in the original story, but they do scare him into taking his medicine. And of course, there's the squashing, and maiming of Sebastian J. Cricket. Those scenes are a nod to the original story, where Pinocchio kills the talking cricket (He has no name, he's just called cricket), with a wooden mallet. I like both though, and I'm glad the took a creative turn with this story.
Well as a Italian person i can help. no its just a new idea the original don't have war, sadness and everything 😅 The only thing its Pinocchio died. But i can conform that ALL the Italian words are right translated and yea Pinocchio its a Italian story
For me this kinda fell into a Wendell and wild hole for me. There isn’t much of an interesting story to me and just kept watching because of how good the stop motion animation was. The last stop motion movie I watched with this high quality was coralline and held this movie up to high standards that it sadly just didn’t reach for me
I feel like the only thing that justifies it winning best animation over Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is the fact that it was STOP MOTION. That stuff takes a lot more time to pull off well than computer animation (not to downplay the work it requires for computer animators or anything) so I feel its fair that it won.
Well, I haven’t read the book either. I do know that it was a deliberate choice to make comparisons to World War II. From what I understand, this is the directors thing as he uses war in a lot of his films. Another thing I would like to note, is the pleasure island comparison. In this film, rather than boys, turning into donkeys for labor, it’s boys turning into men for war. It’s a more depressing change the more you think on it.
I got to see some of this and meet Del Toro at Annecy Festival last year. He spoke how this film had been in production since 2015, and was almost scrapped a couple of times. It wasn’t until Netflix picked it up, he could finish it. A few things got scrapped in the process of all of this, but I definitely think it deserved the Oscar. I also think it being set in WWII Italy was a neat touch that added weight and tone to its content, making it more unique
The animation style to this kinda reminds me of the stuff Laika or Tim Burton do. Also, have you seen the new Mario Movie yet? I have seen it and I unfortunately didn’t think much to it. ☹️
The pleasure island / fascist training camp got me laughing, because it sounds like Del Toro is joking with the whole "that cursed place where boys go to become jackasses".
I felt more like he was going with the spirit of the original. Young boys are being told they will get to act like men. But they are really being tricked and turned into expendable labor/soldiers, to be worked to death and cast aside by the ruling class.
Funny thing when I watched the movie I entirely forgot it was a pinnochio film since this one was so unique and better then the rest that I thought it was an entirely different mivie😅
The setting and the appearance of Mussolini in the movie was because when the info came out about disney making the first animated movie, Mussolini wanted to do it first...making a pinocchio movie (a really bad one) for this in the movie Volpe wanted to praise him. Also is not nazi but fascism, a bit different. Great video, i started recently to watch your videos and already finished mostly every one of them, u are too entertaining to listen and made me laugh to death everytime. I also like those scenes you put in the video with the little avatar. Hope to see more and more and that u're doing fine. See yaaa
Im probebly in the minority maybe but I think visually this movie is pefrect and I love that death lady and concept of Pinocchio gooing back to life The rest (mostly story) was very meh ...like I know this is what original Pinocchio was like too but it was too "episodic" story felt like it had no purpous Honestly since we already have natzis in this why not go completly different and focus just on that? Have Pinocchio build atcuall bonds with other boys forced to go to war, him not understanding the concept of death he would think it's all fun and games up untill he sees his friend die or smf? And then all he would want to do is return to his dad or smf idk it's a quick idea but I just did not like the plot of this movie it was all over the place AND I RLLY WISH IT WAS NOT A MUSICAL like some songs could stay but there were way too many and they were in my opinion unmemoreble (at least in my languege Idk if my opinion would change if I heared the original)
You kept saying "Nazi this" and "Nazi that" but Italians were fascists not Nazis. I'm not trying to be pedant but it is an important mistake to generally refer to a dictatorship as Nazi just because it occured in the same period of time in a nearby geographical area. It was important to me to point out this mistake, but I liked the video, don't personally agree with everything you said, yeti it was enjoyable
7:09 I usually cry with this scene, but this made me laugh very hard. 😂😂 Also, the first time my friend saw the movie she also asked how did that pinecone survived but Carlo didn't? I never questioned that so I investigated and I found out that pinecones resist fire so it actually makes sense. But I think is kinda ironic and sad how the pinecone survived and was still perfect, the crucifix statute only got one arm missed, the church only had a hole in the roof which can be solved whereas Carlo didn't made it, this crearly shows how life is unfair 😢
@@esser3410it’s true tho a plane randomly came over a dropped a bomb imagine sleeping in your bed abd outside ur window a nuke is dropped next to house pretty random
Fun fact, Gullermo del Toro said he always had this reimagined Pinocchio idea since 2000s but never able to really make it because there was no studio or company that would accept his story but since Netflix and online streaming is now everywhere, he was able to get the chance to make this film.
The fascists were not in the original book because it's from the late 19th century and they weren't around ...yet. I suggest you watch the 2019 Italian movie by Matteo Garrone (also with Roberto Benigni but this time as Gepeto). It's the most faithful adaptation (some may say too faithful). Well if you don't like the story you might not like it, but if you can't bother reading the book, it's as close as possible. Gepeto originally makes pinocchio out of an already magic piece of wood and the boy is uh ...bad. But like real bad, original Pinocchio is an entitled brat and that makes so much sense considering the intended moral of the story. The rabbits in this one were straight from the book, pinocchio gets sick and the fairy with blue hair want him to take medicine but he refuses so she calls rabbits pallbearers to scare him (and the ghost of the cricket pinocchio killed in the beginning). It's a pretty dark story but the movie has very pretty visuals and manages to get the almost psychedelic feeling of the original story across pretty well. It's very similar to Alice in Wonderland, the world is simply magical, and by that I mean literal magic surrounds everyone, the puppets can all talk (but they have strings) the fox and the cats are part of everyday life and the fairy with blue hair lives in a mansion in the forest with a giant snail woman. The sea monster is originally just that a sea monster, not a whale just ...a monster. It's honestly a very cool fairy tale.
This is why l love guillermo del toro pinocchio is best director ever in my heart he just gave soul to us with better than disney is garbage and worst! ❤😄👍
Honestly? Although I found it to be a really good movie, it was waaaay too dark for me, almost unnecessarily so, it definitely beat Walt Disney's animated Pinocchio as the darkest version, but even with that I would much rather watch that than this again, so yeah as impressive as it was, it was definitely once and done for me, sorry, guess another depression spike isn't what I'm looking for watching fairy tails. Totally agree that Puss in Boots should have won, it had a much better message and portrayal of death that, while really fricking scary and creepy didn't traumatize me.
03:10 Yeah, the original Disney Pinocchio didn't do much for me either. Even back when it first released it wasn't liked by critics. It just feels like people only really like it now because of nostalgia and excessive in your-face reruns and Disney's forced merchandising. Also, since you've already shared your thoughts on almost every Pinocchio movie out there, I hope you'll consider reviewing the 1978 animated Pinocchio film made in italy. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ptxHMj2m8kA.html Its the only Pinocchio movie that's actually faithful to the original story and doesn't have the Disney stereotypes or nazis. But it does have giants and its set in the 1800's like the original story
Wow an animation that is kidddy and dark but kind of faithful to the source material and its dark enough but enjoyable enough for kids to still watch And it has nazis And isnt too dark that it will NOT make me get traumatized by NAZI RATS....... Honestly i was gunna make a comparison but i forgot what doesnt like i know there is but i cant think of one......... OH NUTCRACKER 3D
I am with you on a couple things. I never cared for the first Disney movie, not then and not now. But Del Toro's was something new. It was sweet, dark, and real. It's a story about fathers and sons. It brought some interesting dialogue. And the designs - ah! I LOVE it, as an artist myself. The way Death looks and speaks, it's regal but fitting. Man.
Personally, I loved this movie, it was dark, complex, and was actually interesting rather than a usual children's movie. It's animation style was beautiful and awesome to see.
I feel like this review felt really mean spirited for some reason, it just felt like he had almost no respect for the first half of the review. I didn't like the tone of it , like not at all it just felt really uncomfortable with this guy trying to brighten a dark and gloomy atmosphere.
'it's a little darker then the other pinocchio movie's' well then you obviously didn't watch the other pinocchio film's because their all disturbing as shit
I actually love the fact that this movie goes away from the source material because we’ve seen the source material so many goddamn times we don’t need to see it again and I love the fact that this movie has its own thing going on (the ending actually made me cry so much)
16:12 technically, speaking, not only would he die, but his body would deteriorate because he’s made out of a wood, so technically he would die, or he would just come back as a spirit I don’t know, but his body would be gone so idk-
I really didn’t like this movie. I know I’m very much in the minority, and that’s okay. I’m genuinely not trying to take away from anyone who did love it, but this is one of those movies for me where I just don’t understand why it’s so highly praised.
My family and I once watched a poorly dubbed italian pinocchio from 1978 because my Dad thought it was the original Disney movie. It was no Guillermo del Toro Pinocchio masterpiece but it was genuinely the most hilarious experience of my life. Please watch it Brian, I promise you won't regret it.
Probably a hot take but this is the first movie where I literally could not physically finish it and I love stop motion which is why I even started it I got to like 30 mins in and it just annoyed me too much Pinocchio was really annoying to me and I just didn’t enjoy it. My opinion so go ahead and disagree but puss in boot’s definitely should’ve won that Oscar.
Pinocchio was written and published in the late 19th century, a few decades before the first ww, so no, fascism does not appears in the original book. But fascism did use Pinocchio as a mascot (along with Dante Alighieri and, for some reason, Mickey Mouse). the idea of pleasure island being a training camp instead is super cool: they make everything seem like a game, but they are actually being prepared for war and instead of becoming donkeys they lose their humanity in a more symbolic way by becoming the perfect soldiers. Also, I forgive you for not knowing it, since you are not Italian, but Mussolini's photos are usually shown upside down.
In the burning at the stake scene, I think the circus guy was just trying to torture Pinnochio as punishment, plus we needed a way to resolve that plotline
I didn’t like this movie much. The tone was too much all over the place. Like they couldn’t decide if it was for adults or children with random slapstick and childish jokes followed by horror.
Isn't Guillermo del Toro in death stranding I remember him having a very depressing Back story I guess everyone in that game had a depressing back story and everyone crying just starting to remember how weird that game was I might go play it
Let me explain at 16:38. Let’s say he burns won’t he come back? No. There would be no wood of himself to come back to. For example, let’s say you have a human that can come back to life with the same body it had before. If you burn that human, it can’t come back to life because it has no body to come back to.
I’m just confused why they didn’t just put Hitler and we’re gonna put the whole naughty stuff. Just put the actual person in there so people learning a little I guess from History.
