When we were children, if our next door neighbours left any of their toys outside their mother threw them in the garbage! 😧 It seemed so harsh, but those kids quickly learned to respect their toys!

I love both regifting stuff and receiving regifted items for so many reasons!! I love that it's not wasteful, it's recycling, and if you want to pass it on you don't have to feel bad. It's awesome when it comes to kids toys and books

I gave a used toy at a one-year-old's birthday party once. I was embarrassed, but then felt better later when the mom said they play with that gift all the time and had wanted one. It's not "normal," in our society to do this, but it should be!

When it comes to gifts, and the giver is someone I’m close to, I usually hang onto them for about a 6-month window. If it’s clothing, I try to wear it at least a few times, etc. But I can’t even remember the last time someone checked up on a gift they gave me, certainly not more than 6 months after giving it, so I don’t think it’s a big deal to just get rid of it if it is causing you grief.

Yess! Byyyye to all those little pain in my behind, toys. I toss things all the time and they never, ever, ever ask where it went. I tried to contain and clean up all those toys for YEARS. My time and sanity is so much more important.

Guess what our oldest son said to me the other day. We were talking and I said I’m keeping these items because you or your brother might need the money some day. He said sell it now and you and Dad enjoy the money! ❤️

Think of thrift stores as object lending libraries. You can buy or replace things for less than $20 and feel less guilty when you re-donate items still in good condition.

Can I just tell you, my jaw dropped when I was listening to your video today … because on Jan 22 this year, I wrote these words as I was thinking about beginning my own decluttering adventure - “It’s not that it doesn’t have value, it just doesn’t have value for me.” Haha! Too funny! But honestly, this was a turning point for me, to understand that distinction, which also brought in a lot more clarity. So thankful for you and finding your videos - thank you for all the encouragement you give to each of us on this journey. God bless you!

With gift declutters, how I deal with it depends on who gave it to me. We don't entertain much, so gifts from people who don't live here I'm good with just letting it go. If it's from my husband or kids I struggle. I'll keep and try to use the best I can, as long as I can.

There are organizations that take prom dresses and give them to students in need! Something to look into in your area 💞or even connect with the high school social worker to see if there’s a need.

I have kept things because they were such a nice gift, but you are so right about not feeling guilty about it. There is one thing I have kept that immediately comes to mind that I really need to get rid of, and Ive been on the fence about it for a while. So thank you for the push I needed. ❤

In my opinion I wouldn't send a thank you before decluttering. They might think that you appreciated the stuff then give you more. I try to not hold onto things too tight. So I would thank them for thinking of you, and it might soften the blow if you let them know you passed it on to a good cause. (I have a generous gifter that would fill my house over if I let it).

I wouldn’t want to mislead the gift-giver by making them think I like it, and then encourage them - in a sense - to give me more things like that. Instead I’ll declutter whatever I need to. I will thank them repeatedly for the things that I did want to keep (and do the picture thing) so that steers them in the right direction for next time. Also discuss how I am very selective, attempting to minimize & declutter, and that I appreciate experiences & consumables as gifts even more. If they ask about a gift I didn’t keep when they’re visiting, I’ll tell them the truth in a kind way, and sometimes I’ve given the item to someone else, so I say something like “A friend really loved it and needed it more, so I let them have it.” I don’t know if that is mean of me, but I personally don’t get offended when my gifts are regifted or donated. It just helps me get a better understanding of what that person values. I’d dislike it more if they kept it and it was an eye sore to them the whole time 😂

Whatever you do, don't lie to the giver when you have gotten rid of an item they gave you. That's a lot more hurtful than them thinking you aren't using it.

I really like your idea of taking a picture while using a gift and sending it to the giver. Better than a thank you note! The giver can feel the sense of joy that they chose and gave the gift. And maybe they won’t ask where it is in the future.

Everyone is hooked up on re gifting items WHY not look at it as passing it forward to someone
@olivemaycards
@olivemaycards 2 года назад
I agree! If it’s a *thoughtful* re-gift it’s actually more generous to me than going out and buying something. If I look at things I have and realize that one of my friends would love them much more than I do offering it to them as a gift is not a bad thing to me. Most often I tell the person “so and so gave me this but it seems like something you would love.” Thoughtless gifting and regifting are the problem. I’d rather get nothing than get some random item, and I try not to give random thoughtless items either.

Some people really DID give you a thing to guilt you and/or control you or even to hold you to future obligations to them. But that’s still not right Imo. People imo really need to stop being so butt hurt when it comes to things like that. I just look at that as their problem tho and not mine and in the future I might just say no thanks. Don’t want your “gift” (which is actually their heavy onus of forced obligation to them that they imposed upon us against our will. So truly, who’s the one being “rude” here eh? Bcuz it ain’t me being rude whenever I get rid of a thing I don’t really want). Plus if I gave them a thing they didn’t keep, it would be ME who needed to reevaluate my gift giving game eh? And I would also do that without getting my feelings hurt...but esp not guilt trip them. If they don’t want it then they don’t want it. It’s just that simple to me. I am not the thing ya know. And I don’t lose self esteem points just Bcuz maybe I didn’t pick the ideal thing for them. And so likewise I expect the same graciousness from others to me. So well ya know. Their issues with attaching themselves so personally to just mere stuff isn’t our problem or our burden to have to carry. Ok rant over. Lol. It’s just that I know. When you get so much with strings, you just don’t want “gifts” anymore. Let’s just make sure it’s a true gift and not a guilt bribe or a guilt induced transaction. I’d rather get nada than to have to be so utterly beholden to some folks.

Exactly! I found this to be a bit manipulative. I'm going to take a picture of me loving the item you gave me...loving it so much I'm planning to get rid of it the second I snap this photo to prove how much I love it? Just thank the person when you receive it, enjoy it while you use it, and declutter when it's served it's purpose in your life.
