Grooming shorthairs to get guard hairs out is the hardest part I have about showing guinea pigs. I've both over, and undergroomed them. Will try some of these methods.
Fantastic! Finally someone posting on grooming for shows! This will be super helpful to my daughter, Darby (Pampered Pigs Caviary) who raises American & American Satins…and particularly loves the AOS. I would love to see similar instructionals for Teddies & Texels since there’s so many different opinions on how to groom them.
Glad you like it, took me a while and there will be an additional video showing some other techniques later in the year, I think the teddy club on Facebook have a teddy grooming video that is very good
Brilliant insight into all the work that goes into preparing guinea pigs for show. With all the work you put in you really deserve your successes on the show bench! I look forward to having my first pigs to put all your advice into practise 👍
Thanks Tina, yes there is a lot of work, but hopefully the video shows that anyone can do well with a little effort, knowledge and help from other fanciers, look forward to seeing your pigs on the show bench when you get them.
Thank you this is very helpful, your a **little** bit rough with them though. Would you be able to do grooming for long haired breeds? Sheba and/Abisinian?
This is so helpful, thank you! I’m new to showing. When is the best time to bath before the show? I’ve read a lot of different answers! I have some self lilac and teddies 😊
Glad this is helpful for you, I squally do the first groom removing guard hairs then give a bath about. 2 weeks before the show, so that the coat can settle, we also have lilacs and teddies in the shed! You’ve chosen two great breeds
@@guineapigswithgreg4575 thank you again! I will bath 2 weeks before. I will be following all the tops in this video 😊 I’ve got my second show coming up but first time with lilacs 😊
Little and often is the key, so I do 15-20 mins per session, but it is important to let the coat settle for a day or two, also too much grooming can cause dandruff or flaky skin so may need a bath in between.
