March is now twelve days young and the shelter has already welcomed 49 guinea pigs. Quite a lot! We received a group of 19 animals from the same address, there were six sows and thirteen boars. The ladies seem healthy and they will probably be able to move to a new owner fairly quickly. The males have come as a group, but they don't seem to like each other very much. Not very strange, since the youngest guinea pig is about six weeks old and we estimated the oldest to be a year old. How do you implement that with minimal risk of fights? Yeah. That's a good one. Not as a group, because they don't get along well right now. We were able to pair the youngest boars with a lonely adult boar from other owners. We then made two more couples, we will see in the coming weeks whether these are good matches. There are now six males from the group together, but because they are not fantastic matches with all those raging hormones. We want to have these six boys castrated anyway. This way, in a few weeks they can all go live separately with one or more females.
Furthermore, we had two visits from the animal ambulance last week because guinea pigs had been found. It involved four very sweet sows who fortunately look healthy. We want to keep Roos, Iris, Fleur and Jasmijn for a few more weeks to make sure they are healthy and not pregnant, but after that we hope to find a nice owner for them soon.
The other three guinea pigs that were found are probably three brothers who unfortunately only appear to be about eight weeks old. They were very impressed and they have some scabies spots. Because they generally don't look too well, we let them recover before we decide what is best for them.

Welcome in our animal shelter! We are located in Dongen (the Netherlands) and we take care of guinea pigs and some other small animals that seek for a new home. Many of these animals stay with us permanently at our welfare centre.
Our welfare centre for pets Beestenplein attributes to a better animal welfare in many ways. Amongst others by offering natural petfood, by our E-magazine and E-learning, by helping other animal shelters and via many other ways.
