Hi everyone and nice to see you again! January is one week old and the first guinea pigs of this year have already been brought and moved. The first guinea pig we welcomed was the sweet Saartje, a sow that was brought in after her friend died. She was not the only lonely guinea pig that was brought this way, in one week we welcomed 9 darlings who lost their friends and became lonely. That's quite a lot! We will see for each of them whether we can find a suitable match with owners who are looking for a new friend for their lonely piggy.
9 guinea pigs in just one week. But those were only the single animals we accepted. On top of that, we also took in 4 male duos. The counter already stands at 17 newbies this month. An advantage: almost all animals look super healthy and seem to have a very nice character, so the chance that they will soon be able to go to a new nice place is also quite high.
Within the lonely girls we welcomed there were two very cute sows that we really wanted to keep for our petting and cuddling team! So we will keep these cuties for ourselves 😊 we don’t do that with all the animals we like, but in recent months we have unfortunately had to say goodbye to a number of beloved members in our cuddle group. We will certainly miss our dear Pieper very much, she recently passed away and was a very valuable member. There was the huge and quite fat miss Toot (1644 grams!). With her friendly face and accompanying character, she quickly won everyone over. Our group of guinea pigs also thought she was allright. Then there was Puck, a cheerful and somewhat fierce lady. She may be a bit more active than Toot, but that is precisely why she also makes a great addition to our crew. She thought it was very important to make her point to the other ladies, so her welcome was a little less warm. But soon the whole group was happily eating endive together. Puck and Toot, like the other members of the petting and cuddling team, will soon regularly visit nursing homes and have an educational role in the shelter during workshops and when we want to explain something about guinea pigs. Not that the guinea pigs mind working, because in the meantime they are generously paid in tasty snacks. In addition, these guinea pigs really enjoy having visitors in their enclosure, as long as they bring something to eat. This makes a very good opportunity for visitors to get to know the guinea pigs up close.
And did any animals move this week? Of course! Ponyo and Sosuke were allowed to go to their new owners, as their little baby was also allowed to move to his own friend. No fewer than 4 dates were planned on Saturday, all of which turned out to be successful. We paired the newbie Bo, a gentle 3-year-old boar, with a very calm old boar from someone else. It turned out to be a golden match! Senior Max was also easy to pair with another calm boar. The somewhat insecure lady Spot was also allowed to go on a date with a castrated boar that had won her trust. And finally there was our fierce girl Pebbles, the terror of the ladies' group where she temporarily lived. But with the right castrated male, she quickly turned out to be very easy. We immediately received photos of the couple the next day, totally in loooooove!

Welcome in our animal shelter! We are located in Dongen (the Netherlands) and we take care of guinea pigs and some other small animals that seek for a new home. Many of these animals stay with us permanently at our welfare centre.
