Guinea pig talk 98: Double-Rico

After a somewhat quiet week, we had a lot to do. We welcomed fourteen guinea pigs from different owners for different reasons. Three single animals had become lonely due to the death of their friend, a couple was brought due to an allergy and a couple came because of a lack of interest. Two castrated boars turned out not to be castrated upon inspection, but since they only had each other for company, this was not a problem. Although not many cuties moved to new owners recently, we managed to find a place in the shelter for all new animals.
The story of Sasja and Seppe is certainly worth sharing. According to their old owners, this very handsome and young couple was purchased at a rodent fair in September. They were very young then. They then changed owners after a few months because interest had waned, but unfortunately the new owners could only give them a good home temporarily. And that's how they ended up in the shelter. But then: it is indicated that it concerns a boar and a sow. And upon inspection this turned out to be true. The boar had not been castrated (which would be extremely special considering the original purchase price of ten euros), but so far no babies had been born. Especially given the size of the female, we initially thought that she should only be about three months old, but their formers owners were sure that they had already been purchased in September. So yes: is one of the two not fertile? We are not going to gamble on keeping them together for the rest of their lives, but we are not going to separate them either. They are clearly crazy about each other! Instead, we will have the boy, which we named Seppe, castrated at the next vet appointment. After that, he and Sasja, the girl, will of course have to stay for another ten weeks, because who knows, they might suddenly miraculously conceive a litter. For those who have a lot of patience…. They can already be reserved!
The guinea pigs were also allowed to taste some new products this week, including these nice lucerne-apple cubes. It's always extra fun to see how they react to something new and as you can see, these extras have been approved! We added them to the assortment in our webshop.
Finally, we would like to put both our Rico and Rico in the spotlight. These boys each came to the shelter with their own story and their own friend and coincidentally had the same name. Blonde Rico was brought with Rocco, but that didn't work out well between them. Rocco was paired again, but because Rico started the tensions between them, we waited a while before he got a new friend. And since a while he has one! What turned out? He got along just fine with this young male. The boys are looking for a nice spacious cage with a new owner who understands them.
Teddy-Rico was with us as a holiday care guineapig with another male. Because his owner did not think things were going well between his former friend, he stayed with us after the holidays. His coat was also not that optimal, he had been suffering from this for some time and we did not immediately see any improvement in the shelter either. He is now also about four years old and therefore no longer a young god. We saw that he was also becoming a bit lonelier over time, so it was really time to give him his own friend again. When an oops litter was brought, we immediately provided him with company. And this Rico was also very happy with that! For this couple, it appears not to be that easy to find a new owner, mainly due to teddy-Rico's age and sometimes changing coat condition. But we hope that will happen someday. And if not, we will of course be happy to take care of this duo at the shelter!
