I heard her several times in Town Hall during my high school years. Once I had a stage seat and had to dipress a typical New York winter cold.Vivid better memory than the cold was the very subtle technique of her left hand accompaniment of a Valse of Chopin . Another charming recollection was of her charming correction of the missed leap in us 10 nr.11. Among the sold out public her proud
There are Wunderkinder and then there are miracles, like Novaes. What bowled over Debussy, James Huneker and everyone who heard her (except the idiots at Philips who excluded Novaes from their Great Pianists series) was her utter naturalness, a natural utterance that made even young Rubinstein sound stiff. This is not to imply that Novaes was some idiot savant. Listen to her Mozart and Beethoven as well as the Chopin that Chopin himself made seem like birdsong - after infinite pains. Good as this recording is, try to find the live 1949 Town Hall Preludes. The sound is excruciating but the playing is what I suspect hasn’t been heard since Chopin left Nohant. No kidding. Thanks for posting.
Magnifient in every detail. Brilliant and perfectly beautiful in a most natural, spontaneous, unaffected way. Probably the greatest Chopiniste who ever lived.
Proud beaming ancient teacher from her youth in Paris.,Isidor Phillip.Indeed her nuance and palette of colors were unique as her lovely stage presence.
I had all of her records in the 60's also, she was my inspiration to play. Always loved her beautiful tone and un-showy but excellent technique, pretty good for someone with hands half the size of Rachmaniniff. lol

Re Phillip with whom my teacher had among h e r teachers with Cortot and Matthay, Novaes often played as encore his Feux Follets , also Mompou and....Pinto, her husband.Concerts were rapturous occasions in those years.
THIS RECORDING IS VERY GOOD, I KNOW, BUT DOES NOT COMPARE TO THE LIVE VERSION, 1949 CHOPIN RECITAL IN NEW YORK...WHEN WE HEAR THAT WE REALIZE WHY SHE WAS ALWAYS SO WELL TREATED BY THE NEW YORK CRITICS! JUST AMAZING !
+luiz g We worshipped her in NY. In the 60's she came every December and played in Town Hall or at Hunter College. We stood for hours in line to get tickets. To this day, the most beautiful playing I have ever heard in my life.
