Tonex Capture changed the game for me. I'm a Tube Amp guy and I have a weird relationship with amp modelers. However, this technology has bridged the two concepts together for me and I share my experience with you. This is my first experience with an amp modeler and it's 2022! Tonex is the latest amp modeler software and hardware solution that brings guitar amp modeling to the masses. The guitar amp modeling software pairs with the Tonex Capture box or any reamping device you have to let you capture your amp and recall your favourite guitar tones any time you want. In this tonex capture review I share the process and my thoughts on this latest guitar amp technology. I compare the amp modeler vs real amp and share some tips to help you create some awesome tonex captures for yourself!

Great Vid Dan ,for someone like me who is a relative newcomer to the world of guitars this is a fantastic tool allowing you to access amp tones that you may not be able to create yourself . A box that can do this for under £200 represents pretty good value for money IK Media should sell quite a few of these..

The availability of amps doesn’t seem so different from their previous versions of Amplitube. But the modelling aspect could be a Kemper killer and bring amp modelling to the masses. Clever move.

The difference is crazy. I’ve heard how GPUs play a role in the processing. Seems they haven’t optimized for M1 processing. I think that will improve in later versions. Hopefully!

Yeah I’ve got a pretty fast gaming computer and did the low res version. Took like 2 minutes. I just got it all and decided to just get the ball rolling by quickly cloning the channels on my Mesa TC50. Already impressed with that. So I can only imagine how advanced sounds! That’s my next step is to really take care in how I mic my amp next time and set up better isolation to cut back on reflections and really get a crisp capture. Considering what I got just tossing a couple mics in front of my amp though I’m pretty happy with it. I am kinda wondering what it’ll do if I ran a blend of amps though. IE two mics two amps.

@LonelyRocker

Thanks! The captures are saved within Tonex as far as I understand. They only work on the Tonex environment. You can transfer them to the Tonex pedal, use them in Tonex or Amplitube. But outside that there is no use for them other than sharing them to Tone.net.

Hi, how do you capture the Amp + a load box like the Ox Box? I can’t get the routing right.
@LonelyRocker
@LonelyRocker 6 месяцев назад
There is a diagram in the TONEX Capture Box Manual. Sometimes it's the routing with the interface that's an issue. I had problems with the Focusrite routing software. It can get confusing if its not working. Hard to diagnose from here but look at both the cabling and how the audio routing is set up in your interface. Good luck!

Hi Dan. im trying to capture a head only, just as you did. I have a Scarlett 4i4 gen3. I can't get it to work with tonex capture due to the focusrite control software. Im in the pulling my hair out stage. Can you explain your routing or share a screenshot?
@LonelyRocker
@LonelyRocker 11 месяцев назад
Oh man. That control software. It’s horrible! I stopped using the Focusrite for capturing because it was way too problematic. What I used to do was cycle through the presets until one worked. I think there was one called “direct” or something? It’s not hooked up right now so I can’t even check but that’s basically how I did it. If I get it hooked up again I’ll try and do a refresh to see if I can figure it out.

I just turn my old DI box around to reamp. Haven’t looked too hard into what a specifically reamp box does other than do what a DI box does in reverse 🤷🏻‍♂️.
@LonelyRocker
@LonelyRocker Год назад
When you feed a signal back to the amp it has to be passive and mimic the level of a guitar signal. So reamp boxes make it brainless. If your method works and you can control the level properly back to your amp, your good!
@trevortwigg1384
@trevortwigg1384 Год назад
@@LonelyRocker what you described a DI box does in reverse. So that’s why I turned it around. It converts instrument level to Line level. So logic dictates if you use it in reverse it does what you just said. I did buy a reamp box since I posted this comment but, haven’t tried it yet. I did some reading and decided the reamp box was probably more optimal.

Hello, could you help me with a question? I have captured my amp and I want to save the file on my pc or on a flash drive, but it has been saved in Tonex as a tone model, not as a preset and I cannot export it. Could you tell me how I can export my own capture to my hard drive? I would also like to know if there is a difference in capturing in Advanced mode or in Default mode
@LonelyRocker
@LonelyRocker Год назад
Hi There. The presets only work within TONEX. I believe all of the presets exist within some kind of master file but are not available outside of the app. You can't use them anywhere else so a standalone file would be useless to you. You can move presets between the app and the pedal and share them on Tone.net. The differences between Advanced and Default are in the fine details. In some cases you may not be able to notice the differences but Advanced just renders a more detailed model. It takes longer to make but is the highest quality capture TONEX can do. Hope that helps!
@keemarcello1000
@keemarcello1000 Год назад
@@LonelyRocker I already solved the export of the captures to the PC. It has to be possible, because there are people who take screenshots of their amps and then sell them on the internet, so it is possible to save the files on the hard drive. Thank you so much

The line out/power out switch in case I am taking the signal from a reactive load box, should be treated as a line out output of the amp and set in power out or should I do it like you done in your setup by plugin the amp speaker out directly to the ToneX capture set as line out and from the tonex “to amp” connection i send it to my reactive load box?

@LonelyRocker
@LonelyRocker Год назад
Hey there! When doing your captures you can actually do whatever you want. Ideally, if you want to capture snapshots of how your amp actually sounds, set all the dials the way you need to to get your tone. EQ, presence, everything. The dials on the Tone Model don't emulate your amp. They just give you extra adjustment. So feel free to make your adjustments and capture the best tones possible. Hope this helps!!

I have an orange ad30 and a 50w tube combo and I need a solution to attenuate the volume, to be able to overdrive them at home, could this be a good solution? Is -24db of attenuation enough? Or is it still always bound to the PC? I would like to understand if it can be compared to the UAD Ox Box or the Capture is just an extension of the Tonex plugin?

@joeMW284 Год назад
You can use any passive DI. Just run the signal backwards (you'll need a TRS to female XLR adapter cable). Use the monitor out of your sound card as the send so you can use the volume knob to trim the level. That's what I do. Works great. Cost maybe $30 total. If you're getting a lot of humming and buzzing, use one of those three to two prong plug adapters to lift the ground.

It works, I managed to capture my kemper! I have captured a few kemper profiles - they all sound the same as the kemper, just need a bit of EQ tweaking which is nothing unusual. I’ve noticed all the captures are a bit more gainy than their counterparts, but this seems to be something others people have mentioned when capturing so I guess I just really need to look at input trims and perhaps lower them a little. I love some of the Tonex captures, I just have some absolute favourites on my kemper that I’ve used for so long and have just become part of me haha! Thanks man ✌️
