I just got my first amplifier with the send/return function. It is a fact that dynamically changes the whole way of using some types of effects, for the better. Thank you so much for the direct tips! Big hug from Brazil!

Mike, I truly appreciate your insight here. and you taking the time to explain, very clearly, the differences achieved by using an effects loop. Tip of the hat, and a deep bow of gratitude!

Hey! Can you make a list of what pedals should go to the effects loop and wich ones to the input of the amp? Please! Haha, thank you!
@chrisdaviesguitar
@chrisdaviesguitar 4 года назад
Your wah-wah, distortion, fuzz and overdrives are usually before the amp. Time based effects are usually in the loop, so that would be your echo, delay, reverb, chorus, flanger, phaser. tremolo, all in the effects loop. Having said that, this only as a suggested guide. Please remember, what sounds good you, sounds good to you! So there is no correct answer to your question. :) It's all down to personal preference at the end of the day.

Mike, I have a Ceriatone JTM45 bluesbreaker amp. The effects loop is passive on the amp. My pedals distort matter whay I do. Boss DD3 distorts as well as my TC Electronic Vintage delay which says it can be used at line level, still distorts. I have a Ceriatone Klein-u-lator which is nothing more than a Dumblelator interface box, but it doesn't work very well. It works fine in my Ceriatone HRM amp Dumble clone, but not the JTM45, both amps have passive loops. What should I do?Thanks from Michael Newell from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

I never played the Ceriatone JTM45 myself, so I am lacking any personal experience. However it seems, that something is wrong with the Ceriatone JTM45 FX-Loop in general based on its construction. See this thread here where various folks talk about the same problem (but with no solution........): www.marshallforum.com/threads/help-fixing-ceriatone-effects-loop.98870/

Are the effects loop tubes located with the preamp tubes or in some other location of the amp

HI MIke thank you for your excellent tutorial you gave me a few great ideas about how to use my effects pedals differently,,I was unaware that its not a good idea to put a wah pedal in the effects loop but when you talked about it , it made senses and i quite like The Wah effect when I play with Fuzz which is quite a lot. at the moment i do most of my recording at home where i use A Boss ME 50 multi effects unit straight into a Boss 8 track Digital recorder..im sure you wouldn't do that in a professional studio but it works for me really well and im very happy with the sound that i get. I also wanted to say that i have really enjoyed over the years your Demos of Vintage Guitars i find them to be very well presented and interesting and i look forward to more of them Kind regards.. Stuart

Thanks for stopping by! Inserting a WahWah in the FX-loop really is not the best choice. :) In general you should do what sounds and feels good for you, that's why I can imagine that you have fun with the direct rout of your Boss ME50 into the digital recorder. Nothing wrong here, I also record at times directly without amp into the digital realm.

Weist du wass man damit kan?
@MikeBurn
@MikeBurn 8 лет назад
:) Your german is very good! However I answer in english for that other viewers also can learn about parallel-serial-FX-loops. "ON" means standard parallel-mode. In serial mode the FX-loop behaviour is very different, the effects loop lets you then i.e. control the amp's volume remotely by simply connecting an analog Volume pedal to SEND/RETURN. Notice: the signal chain is severed if the effects loop is configured serially and no effect device is connected.

What if you have 3 amps (which i have) and you want to have all 3 amps share the reverb/delay and looper pedal through there effects loops? Is there a product that can do that so i can easily switch to each one as a footswitch.
@MikeBurn
@MikeBurn 6 лет назад
For a setup with 3 amps or more :) you will be in need of a so called analog switch array. Look here for that you get an idea for the start: www.boss.info/us/promos/es-8_deep_dive/

thank so much for this video. Can i use an EQ to effects loop (MXR EQ 10band)? thanks again
@MikeBurn
@MikeBurn 7 лет назад
Sorry for my late answer. Of course you can do that but. You just have to be aware that an EQ used in the FX-loop processes the already processed signal incl. amp EQ coming from the preamp-stage, while an EQ in your main amp input 'only' processes the dry guitar signal. The results and EQ behaviour will be dramatically different.

I am not getting any distortion from my Peavey 6505 amp after I added delay and looper to FX send/return and wah pedal to front input of the amp. Before I had the natural gain and distortion working on the dirty channel. How do I fix this so my distortion works correctly from the amp? Here is my pedal chain: guitar-wah-delay-looper-> send/return FX loop looper-> front of amp
@MikeBurn
@MikeBurn 7 лет назад
If there's not a typo, this can't work since the guitar signal itself goes to the FX loop. I recommend anyway you connect only the delay pedal/unit to the FX-loop. Connect the output jack of the delay-unit to the 'return' jack of your 6505 and the input jack of your delay unit to the 'send' jack of your 6505. Your guitar cable should go into the Wah and the output from the Wah to the Looper and the output of the looper to the front-input jack of your 6505. I also recommend that before connecting the delay to the FX-return you setup your guitar-wah-looper-> front of amp chain first and set the input/output levels of your looper properly since this will affect the distortion level. After doing that setup the delay FX-return and balance the input/output/mix levels of your delay unit, because this will affect the possible distortion level. When hitting bypass on the delay unit you should hear no difference in signal level and distortion, then the levels are set up right. Let me know if this helps. :)

Thanks I will try this approach. I did some testing. Right now I have: guitar-wah-amp front delay (EHX Canyon)-> RETURN FX LOOP back of amp delay-looper-> SEND FX LOOP I also have a Beat Buddy (BB) drum pedal that I route to a PA system. However, I did speak to Pigtronix support about how to connect the BB to Infinity Looper and they mention to put the BB last in the chain connected to the looper and have BB go to the SEND FX loop.

That tone is fat while preserving the well defined crunch. You hear both the guitar sound and the effects distinctly. Great Tip!

/Joszef K
