Effects loops explained! In this beginner's guide, Sam takes a look at what an effects loop actually is, and runs through a few ways that you can use your pedals with your amplifier's send and return sockets.
We also get to hear how a delay sounds in an effects loop, how distortion sounds in an effects loop and more.

The traditional way of connecting effects pedals to an amplifier would be to go from your guitar, into your pedals and then into the input, or the "front end" of your amp. Now this is fine if you’re only planning on using certain effects with the clean channel of your amp, but as anyone who’s played around with pedal signal chains before will tell you, certain effects such as modulations, delays and reverbs, usually sound better if they’re placed after any overdrive or distortion pedals.
So with that in mind, if you think about the drive channel on your amp as another overdrive or distortion pedal, you probably wouldn’t want to put a delay or a reverb pedal before that in the signal chain, and that’s where an effects loop comes in, as they allow you to place effects pedals AFTER the pre-amp section of your amplifier.
In this video, we explain how to connect your pedals to an effects loop, talk about which types of effects work best in a loop, take a listen to a few examples, as well as touching on more advanced uses such as 4-cable method and using the return socket to bypass an amplifier's pre-amp stage.

This video was so helpful!! I've been mostly a self-taught guitarist (I was given lessons by my grandfather who taught basics, then my uncle who dove into more theory, some scales and such years ago, but when he said he couldn't teach me further I went beyond that), and so I've never really been shown how to properly navigate the amps/pedal scene. I've been gifted a bunch of pedals to demo that I haven't properly used yet. This video has helped SO much. Thanks you!!

I am such a fan of your videos and so glad I found them. I have watched many others in my quest to understand the effects send/return loops and 4 cable methods....mind wracking for a non techie....BUT....when I slow down your videos...pause...think about what you said and then follow the signal chain like you say to do it all make complete sense. Bravo for such well done and educational videos....will have to look and see what other video gems you have made.....best ever....well done sir....well done!....i am grateful.

As someone who never really leveraged pedals and just kind of took what the amp gave me, there was a lot of confusion as to where my pedals (that I'm acquiring) go. This was a very simple explanation and extremely helpful, so thank you very much! Cheers!

That's a great video. I liked very much how you shown exactly how different effects sound plugged directly into the amp as opposed to the fx loop. And I got a clear answer to the question where the built in overdrive effect of the amp is relative to the location of the event loop. Now I know I can plug my looper into the fx loop and get both clean and overdriven guitar sound recorded

Thanks for the very good tutorial on effects loop. I recently bought a Marshall JCM 2000 (DSL 100) / 4x12 cab, and I am new to the Tube amps. I was concerned about getting my stomp pedals and Lexicon rack mount multi-effects unit connected properly to my new amp. This video is laid out very well and is extremely easy to understand and follow. Incidentally, I do have the same Boss Metal Distortion pedal as shown in the video. I love that heavy drive pedal. I will try the Boss distortion in the effects loop as well. Thanks!

Strangely, it seems the place to use effects direct to the amp's input would be in the studio, where problems can be controlled and cool sonic quirks captured! For live, the effects loop means reliability and predictability if you're doing lots of shows.

Thank you for this explanation. But can I still use my amp's onboards effects as well? I have a boss katana artist with lots of effects and an effects loop input on the back. So if I'm understanding correctly, plug the guitar in front as usual, do all my settings, EQ, effects and If I happen to have a pedal I want to use in addition, just run that into the effects loop on back, no problem right?

You mentioned using a multi-effects pedal board with the FX loop on a pre-amp. How-ever what if I wanted the multi effects board to be completely in the FX Loop? Example, if I wanted to use a Pod X3 live with a Mesa Boogie Triple rectifier amp head. Could I simply send the signal out of the amp head FX Loop to the guitar/input on the Pod x3 Live then out on the Pod x3 live to the return FX Loop on the Amp head? Guitar would be plugged into the input on the amp head. I'm worried I'll blow something out as these are both quite powerful and it was just an idea for now lol. My goal here was to have the amp head first and post effect would be the Pod X3 Live.

Hi- I love the new Katana MkII and I've moved from a Fender Blues Deluxe and large pedal board to the Katana, Boss GA-FC and a small board to keep some effects mostly for violin. I use my setup for both guitar and violin. My question is how to route my signal correctly to take advantage of the effects loop in the Katana MkII. I'm using a new Ernie Ball VP JR-Tuner (that also has an effects loop send/return). The chain right now goes: Guitar to VP JR IN- VP JR EFF Send- Pettyjohn Drive- Micro POG- Fender 59 Bassman- Delay- Ditto Looper- VP JR EFF Return- VP JR Out- Katan Inst IN. While I'm getting good tone and sound, I feel like i should be using the effects loop on the Katana rather than putting everything to the front of the amp. Can you shed some light for me?
