On receiving a request from subscriber "Zippy Zuul " for this song, my first thoughts were, that I didn't realise there were lyrics other than rather rude ones we used to sing to the tune starting:| "Auntie Mary had a canary......etc"
On entering the title in the RU-vid search box, I found versions by The Alexander Brothers and Andy Stewart.
The lyrics were harder to find, and having found only one site for them there seemed to me to be a lot of errors in them, probably because the person who uploaded them had tried to transcribe the song by listening to Andy Stewart singing it, but did not understand his Scottish dialect.
I sought help from Mudcat.org and thanks to Mick Pearce (MCP), I now have what we think are the correct lyrics and it is these I am presenting here in my own interpretation based mainly on Andy Stewart's singing.
Feb 2022 My thanks to "xWHITExEAGLEx" who has just pointed out to me that it should not be "from Russia..." but should be "from Rosshire".
The chords I am using are the ones I play when we do this tune with our Friday night session music group in a set beginning with The Athol Highlanders, and followed by Cock o' the North.

Thank you so much for this as I only know the Scouse version... Auntie Mary stook a canary up the leg of her draws when it got there it gave her a scare as we gave it a round of applause...

I once had a cockatiel that sang the British Grenadiers, he was my age, his name was my first word. His example made me holler the Cock O the North's melody in turn one fateful day and met something I'd no way back from and came back out again. I didn't know the words, but your version here might now be my favourite song ever.

Thanks for posting this! I too went looking for the lyrics and the only ones I could find had errors just for the reason you described. I play music at care homes and I like to play a full hour of Scottish songs for the shows I do around Robbie Burns' Day. This one and "Campbelltown Loch" also by Andy Stewart really provide wonderful counterpoint to my Robbie Burns' and Harry Lauder songs.

I've been researching the history of clan Gordon in recent years. Found out I had an ancestral connection to this clan. So I did my family tree & ancestral DNA sample test and showed up 4% Scottish (oh sh**!, I said) But the history overall is some wild ****. & this is the 1st time I ever heard the words. I think it's cool asf.

Haha, sir, good playing, but it's not "Russia to the Forth" it's Ross-shire! i.e. she likes lads from northwest Scotland to southeast Scotland.

Thanks for the correction. I got the words from the internet and thought it rather strange, but went with what I found. Your info makes much more sense. Andy Stewart's enunciation obviously led to the person transcribing the lyrics from his singing to think it was Russia when obviously now that you have pointed it out, it was in fact Ross-shire.
