Covering the entire Rocket To Russia album, mostly the 40th Anniversary tracking mixes. Open chords, barre chords and downstrokes, just like the record. The ripping main riff of this song has an iconic recognizable sound when you play the full open chords. The guitar is a customized strat with a Hallmark "The '67" Mosrite-style pickup, and the amp is the Softube Marshall Plexi Super Lead 1959. Thanks for watching!

Awesome, dude! So close to the original! What string gauge and pick up are you using? Keep it rocking! Cheers!

Thanks! I’m just using regular 10s for strings, and the pickup is a Hallmark Guitars “The ‘67” pickup. It’s not the exact specs of anything Johnny Ramone used, but it does have an important Mosrite-esque quality. I would actually recommend a more accurate Ventures II spec pickup as the easiest way to get a "Johnny tone". I also believe Softube's fairly accurate emulation of the Marshall Plexi amp is a huge contributor to the final tone here, as well as additional EQ/compression/reverb I used to mimic the production on this album specifically (the amp plugin doesn't sound fully like this on it's own). And of course, the full chords and downstrokes really sell it!

Not just the down strokes but barre chords are on point as well! It’s like Johnny Ramone in the flesh! 😍

Such a sick song. Definitely one of those songs you blast while speeding through Arizona desert highways.

Great cover! Sounds spot on. During the intro riff, do you play that open A strum once, or twice before switching back to open E?
@HardlyRamone
@HardlyRamone 2 года назад
You only really hit the A once while it's properly fretted down, but you also strum during the chord changes on either side of it. It creates a sort of transition noise between each chord. You don't want to change chords so fast that it happens in between two strums. Playing the intro of this video back in 0.25x speed may help visualize
@leamanc
@leamanc 2 года назад
@@HardlyRamone Is that the same technique used in the E-to-A riff of California Sun also? It sounds like there’s a slight change in sound when changing chords, almost like a pull-off of many strings at once.
@HardlyRamone
@HardlyRamone 2 года назад
@@leamanc I'm pretty sure I did it the same way in both covers, yeah. I'm never really releasing the strings here but there is a strum that happens mid chord change, creating a sort of noise sound that happens in between the actual harmonic chords. Johnny fingered the chords a few different ways from what I can tell, I find myself not doing it a consistent way either haha. I think in It's Alive he's actually lifting his fingers off the strings between chords, but that footage is so fuzzy still
@scottjohnson8316
@scottjohnson8316 2 года назад
Is that opening bit kinda like a hammer on E major followed by a D chord?
@HardlyRamone
@HardlyRamone 2 года назад
It starts on open E major but you drop the fingers down to fret more of an open A chord for a strum. Then you switch to the D chord at the end before the progression loops. Johnny fingered the chords a few different ways live but it was essentially always this

Ok cool....saw them twice in city gardens in Trenton , NJ so loud and intense you couldn’t believe it. After a show I was spent tired and broke but desperately wanted a final soda or water before hitting road for long 90 minute drive home. Stood at the bar and realized I was basically the last person there. Begging the bartender didn’t seem to work then out of nowhere I hear ‘get the kid a coke’.....complete with New York accent and I turn to the side and it’s Joey Ramone walking up to the bar right next to me. I couldn’t even look at him as I was in shock and just muttered thanks. Thought you might like that one.
