Covering the entire Rocket To Russia album, mostly the 40th Anniversary tracking mixes. Barre chords and downstrokes, just like the record. The original 1977 version of this song has the main rhythm guitar turned down in the mix a little to make room for a surf rock inspired overdub of palm muted power chords throughout the entire song. This was never replicated live, as Johnny Ramone would just play the main rhythm part. The guitar is a customized strat with a Hallmark "The '67" Mosrite-style pickup, and the amp is the Softube Marshall Plexi Super Lead 1959. Thanks for watching!

Another amazing cover. I really like how you added the overdub from the studio recording. Also, loving the lighting for each album's covers.

Thanks man. I thought it’d be cool to add the approximate overdub part since it isn’t showcased much anywhere. Glad the lighting is effective!

We chatted before about how wrong “Official” tabs can be. In this case, they would have you play the F and G chords at the 1st and 3rd frets. As usual, you got it right!

Yup! Johnny Ramone’s rare usage of an E shape minor chord gets overlooked a lot in this song too, but you can see him fretting A minor about 24 seconds into this song’s official music video, on a closeup of his hand. This song is rarely ever played right in tutorials because the chosen chord voicings are anything and everything.

@@HardlyRamone I love how much effort you put into studying Johnny’s technique. I’ve picked up a lot from your videos. Another one is on “It’s A Long Way Back,” where you play the B flat chord as an E shape. Every single tab has that as an A shape at the first fret, but I’m sure you’re right. Can’t wait to see what you do next!

@@leamanc Ha thanks man! Yeah that's a cool detail with that song, you're really catching stuff. I don't know why he went back to the E shape for the last chord, but it definitely has a different sound from using all A shapes, especially with 2nd inversions. I think in simple songs like these, the small details have a bigger effect than usual on the final sound of the song. Each member was putting their own little nuances into the music, and probably with more intent than is commonly considered (that band made a lot of thought-out things look like a happy accident imo). A lot of Ramones band covers overlook this little stuff in the playing, and I think it causes the songs to lose some of their charm in places, or even throughout. It's still always great to see people jamming to Ramones songs in the first place though, haha

THIS IS AMAZING BRO, you have no idea how talented you are!! I just started learning Ramones songs because I’m such a big fan, do you have any advice or recommendations for me on amps, guitars, etc, please. I just really want to be able to play this on my own someday. I really do, you have no idea.

Thanks man! I have worked pretty hard at 'perfecting' this style as a hobby, so I appreciate the kind words. Definitely watch my recent FAQ video for some tone-chasing tips. The specific guitar you use doesn't really matter too much. Johnny Ramone's guitar did affect his sound, but you can get pretty close with anything of decent quality that has a good high-output bridge pickup, or even just an EQ pedal (see the aforementioned video). If you got unlimited cash though I recommend the Johnny Ramone guitar by Hallmark Guitars, that's what I'm using now and it's really close to what he had. For an amp, go for anything that can get a a Marshall type sound, or just buy a Marshall. If you want a super budget friendly bedroom amp, find a used Marshall Lead 12 combo amp. I have one that I've used for years! If you have an unlimited budget, just go for a real vintage Marshall Super Lead (Johnny's amp for the 70s and early 80s) or a Marshall JCM 800 (Johnny's amp for the rest of his career). Marshall also sells the SV20H Studio Vintage now, which is perfect for Ramones tones. Orange is another good amp company for mid range amps, their Micro Terror can be hooked up to a proper cab for great tones that fit the bill.

@@HardlyRamone Thank you so much bro!! I really needed this recommendation and information. I wanted to get that Johnny Ramone sound when it comes to playing these Ramones songs. I’m like an intermediate guitar player so I want to be able to play like you or at least close to Johnny style. That’s why I was curious especially cause I’m a big Ramones fan. Thanks again bro!! Don’t stop playing bro, you’re doing great!! Wish me luck bro as I go on this journey on learning some of these Ramones song. Might take a while for me but it will all be worth it at the end. Thank you.

@@martindelgadoyactayo8648 You’re welcome, and good luck! The technique will do more for your sound than any super specific gear can, even if you don’t have the exact “tone” you can make it sound like Johnny’s chords and strumming. The way he played was surprisingly particular and really does create “the sound”. His actual tone changed a lot.

@@martindelgadoyactayo8648 i was in a situation similar to yours, and i can confirm the claim that the guitar itself doesnt really matter all that much, i use the humbucker pickup in my ibanez gio (the cheapest one you can find) and it sounds great. for amps i would actually just recommend getting an interface and using the free version of amplitube, thats what i am doing at least. the default marshall amp is modeled after the jcm 800 and sounds awesome

Having a debate with a fellow Ramones fan. Are you able to confirm what the chords are for “go lil camero go” during the “good times for everyone” part?
@HardlyRamone
@HardlyRamone 2 года назад
Ah, I almost missed this! The chords and progression are E, G, E, A during those lyrics specifically. The G and A chords are played with E shape barre chords (at the 3rd fret and the 5th fret) and the E chord is played with an A shape barre chord at the 7th fret. Also, for some reason, the guitars are tuned to around 432 Hz instead of the normal 440hz. That can make it hard to to tell which chords are which unless your guitar is tuned to that same pitch. Does that answer your question well enough?

Hey mate, could you please tell me what chord do you play during the line "But she just couldnt stay". Is it just a three notes power chord X X X 7 7 5 Or is it a full minor barre chord? 5 5 5 7 7 5
@HardlyRamone
@HardlyRamone 2 года назад
It’s a full minor chord! The rest of the chords are major. A very commonly overlooked detail of the song for sure
