This is Michael, Kelly Rogers fiancé! Thank you so much Mark and Jen for the birthday shoutout!!! She was so surprised!!! We watch all the GOTD episodes together!!! Love the 53!!! Thanks again!!!
I actually bought my first telecaster because of this video. I'm a metal guy and have ignored this style of guitar for 30 years. It is alot of fun because it sounds so unique. Onward and upward Mark.
Congrats on the Gibson hire! Your knowledge of vintage guitars and what their unique attributes might mean to a guitar player is just what Gibson needs. BTW, the "solder drop" on early Tele bridge covers usually just appears as a shadow of a spot, as it was the spot where the platers soldered a wire to the part to hang it in the tank for chrome plating. It was supposed to be removed when the wire was unsoldered, but they got sloppy once in a while. Sometimes the ones with actual solder still on are forgeries, but you can tell an old one because they were stamped out of heavier gauge metal. It's kind of like the circle overspray on the back of the black guards, sometimes its there, but more commonly not.
Hey there, Mark and Jen, I've been watching for over a year. Thanks for being yourselves. Tomorrow (October 17th) is my birthday, would be awesome to see a Jazz Master.
Douglas: the LeDain Commission recommended legalizing or decriminalizing cannabis in 1972; we've been waiting since then, but it didn't stop us toking; It's about time.
I could not love this guitar any more....just amazing. Its like if Apple came out with an Iphone XSMax as one of the first electronic things they ever made....its that far ahead of its time. Just can't imagine something released today in any product line that is so revolutionary. (as a Waylon fan....I have to say - Nicccccce shirt amigo!)
My oldie is also a ‘53. It’s seen way more play than this one but is still in solid shape. Bridge pickup shorted out and was rewound in the ‘60s. Original tone cap dried out and was replaced in the ‘70s. Neck (a soft V, unusual for a ‘53) was oversprayed with satin lacquer…feels great & plays fast. Weighs just under 7 lbs. Bought it 32 years ago for a little less than they go for now. :)
Back when I went to church reg'lar like, and sang in the High School choir, our geetar player came in with a Blackguard Tele...I KNEW it was special, and asked about it. He showed me how the rhythm pickup had that capacitor on it for the Country and Western players...Just like in Reggae, the guitarist may play a "shadow" line along with the bass...the things one remembers... I dont even want to know what this guitar will go for....I think it was only a few hundred that landed that Blackguard in the '70's
Mr. Agnesi it’s appropriate that you are wearing a Waylon Jennings shirt while demoing this guitar. 53 Teles were Waylon’s favorite. In fact most of his Teles (the ones with the leather tooling) were 53’s. His leather tooled blackguard was a Broadcaster (this is the one seen on the Dukes of Hazard). However he was mostly seen with one of his 53’s that had white guards and later EMG pickups.
ooh la la , 53' blackgaurd tele , so cool , such great tone and reverb , it is truly a magical piece , that flat pole just has such sparkle , it jumps out at you and grabs you by the throat , spectacular , if only I had stupid money. great set Mark , great stash Norm.
I NEVER thought I'd own a Pre CBS Fender guitar but I found a 1963 Duo Sonic in a hock shop and it was a good price and a factory custom color to boot.
Nice! The first electric guitar I ever played was a '53 blackguard (I was 14 at the time), and I have loved Teles ever since. Never been able to afford a real '53, so have to be content with my custom shop (which is awesome). Mark is right...Leo got it bang on, first go! Great stuff.
What a wicked guitar that tone, how can you work in a shop like Norms, you would be like a kid in candy shop, my g/f said if you won the lottery what you do, I said easy getting a first class plane ticket to LA, and then head to Norms and go shopping, she just looked at me, love Tele Tuesdays !!!
Talk about a hype-master this Mark is. You are certainly a gem of a find for any pawn shop owner. I certainly hope the big guy is giving you a big commission on everything you sell. If he has you on salary, you should give him the ultimatum ASAP. No kidding. Leo is wondering what all the hype is all about. The only thing magical about that Tele is that its old. Yes, it certainly CAN be improved and has been. Its just that you cannot hype that.
Middle position is the neck pickup without dark circuit, not both pickups, but you know that Mark. No neck and bridge setting unless you jam the switch. Best mod you could do would be to disable the dark circuit but it would devalue the guitar too much.
Beauty Clark! Hey Mark... does anybody make flat pole piece pick up currently? And I really enjoyed the show today. 2 bucks says Jon5 swarms that case... and probably the butterscotch as well. Cheers! From Portland OR
A Fendercaster and a nice one as well... I know I will ever effort one of these. I don't even wanna dream about owning one. It's just to depressing to think about it.
