Guitar Pickup Comparison: PRS SE vs. Seymour Duncan

Guitar Pickup Comparison
Guitar: PRS SE Custom 24 2012
PRS pickups: HFS (bridge) and Vintage Bass (neck)
Seymour Duncan pickups: Alnico II Pro (bridge) and SH-1n '59 (neck)
Amp: Fender Hot Rod Deville III 410
Overdrive: Maxon OD808
Heavy Distortion: MXR Super Badass Distortion
Pickups were compared using all 6 pickup settings (3 humbucker and 3 coil-tap) and 3 tone settings (clean, overdrive, and heavy distortion) using the same riff for each tone setting. All pickup and tone settings were used for each pair of pickups (PRS and Duncan) to try and make it as objective as possible.
To me, the Alnico II sounded more bright and crisp than the HFS. Also the '59 sounded warmer and more rounded than the Vintage Bass pickup.
And I apologize for the clipping in the louder overdrive and heavy distortion sounds. Guess I should have balanced that out a little better before I started! Oh well.

Very thorough comparison. I could hear the SD's were a bit brighter and louder. As far as Mr. Smith's comment, just blow that off. You're a human being, not a effin robot! You accomplished what you set out to show us and thank you for doing it. Especially for those of us who about to install pickups in their axe. If my PRS sounded as good as yours, I wouldn't touch it. Peace

I liked both sets of pups, but I think the Duncans sounded just a tad bit sweeter. I've been playing for over 35 years and I can tell you that today's guitars have much better pickups in them then when I started playing. Now days you can buy a guitar such as the excellent SE and get it to sound great right out of the box. Thanks for sharing man.

Seymour Duncan sound much clearer and brighter, could this just be down to string change?

I don't appear to be able to reply to Dan Rigg's comment below, so I'll reply to it here in case anyone is wondering. "Seymour Duncan sound much clearer and brighter, could this just be down to string change?" Yes, new guitar strings usually sound clearer and brighter to me too. Unfortunately I did end up changing the strings after I put the new pickups in, which definitely effected the sound a little. This obviously makes for much less objective a comparison than desired. I apologize for this inconsistency. However, I've had my current strings on for a while so maybe if I get some time I'll re-film the Seymour Duncan sound clips with these more worn strings. But with the time I've had with the new pickups (about 7 months now) compared with the time I've had with the stock ones, there are clear differences in tone (listening back to different recordings from both pairs of pickups) regarding the brighter treble pickup and the warmer bass pickup. I happen to prefer the Duncans for the styles of music I play, but of course some people may prefer the stock pickups which is totally cool. After all, we're kind of comparing apples with oranges!

Did you have to do anything special to get the legs of the 59 to fit into the pickup cavity in the neck, or did it fit with no problem? I'm asking because I would like to put a set of 59s in my PRS S2 Custom 24 and I'm worried about the baseplate legs not fitting.

I got the 2015 SE Custom 24 30th Anniversary. I love the guitar but never was happy with the pick ups. Mine came with the G&B pickups. I just installed a pair of Duncans. The JB-4 in the bridge and the SH-2 Jazz pickup in the neck. In my mind there is no comparison. The Duncan win hands down. The G&B pickups were way to muddy. I might not have changed them if it had come with the HFS pickups. They blow the G&B's away. But it was the best move for me to make the change to Duncans. The PRS Screams!! Great Video, and the Duncans sound great!!

What is a good way to find out which pickups I have in my PRS SE? I've been with Gibson and Fender all my life and just bought a PRS used the other day and I'm trying to learn a bit about it. thanks
@bertenjr1470

About the only way is to pop them out and it is stamped on the bottom of the pickup. I really made the best move buying the Duncan's and installing. I have 3 Gibson's and the PRS gets the most play. I love the feel of the guitar and the sound that I get from the Duncan's. I may have went the other way if I had got PRS HFS pickups..I don't know. I do know that the G&B's that came with it had to go.

I think the PRS muddy-sound issue is related to the volume pot. They appear to be using volume pots that would nornally be used for single coil pickups, too low resistance. Switching pickups won't solve it, you should try switching the pot instead.

I just swapped out my PRS SE custom hollow pups out for SD "Whole Lotta's" getting more definition, color, and clarity as you are getting. Could not be happier with the tone using an old vintage tube amp with an old P12n. I also swapped out one piece bridge with a John Mann adjustable one with all new inserts. The sustain, and intonation is now fantastic. I had went thru 2 stock bridges that were so poorly made, being so sloppy in the fits, that they would tilt to cause string buzzing. PRS SE's have a good solid basic build construction for a foundation to build on with the potential to become a really good guitar.

You play the short sequence differently, in particular the final chord you strum right through on the Seymour's but not the PRS so difficult to compare. Also your low E is flat through most of this. In fact you appear to be a lot more warmed up on the Seymour's. Sounds not the same, the mic's further away or something's different. Can hear it in your voice also.

I enjoyed that man ! The first thing is it makes the guitar look soooo much better ! I have the same guitar and love it to death, and you video has now inspired me to change the pickups in mine as well. One question though is when you buy pickups now do they have to have the coil tap options? And how hard was that to wire up ? Thx man and take care !
@SethRoachMusic
@SethRoachMusic 9 лет назад
Thanks Greg! Yeah I like the way the guitar looks much better with the new pick ups partly because it makes it begin to look like a higher end Prs model!
@SethRoachMusic
@SethRoachMusic 9 лет назад
Before you purchase the pickups, make sure they have 4 wires, not 2. They'll call them a 4-Conductor pickup. Having those 4 wires will enable you to wire it so that you can coil tap. It wasn't too difficult, but it took a couple tries before I got it right. I'd never put pickups in a guitar before this (let alone do much soldering). But I did a little research and troubleshooting on guitar tech forums when necessary and was able to resolve all issues.

I have the slash Alnico II Pro pair on order for my PRS SE 245. The SE pickups aren’t bad actually, but I am trying to get that GnR sound as close a possible. I have different guitars for different sounds. I got the SE to be a project guitar with about a 300 budget. It actually plays as good as my core custom 24, but sounds much more LP like.

Pickups in PRS SE Custom 24 are Korean made by a company called G&B, not PRS USA made! I am changing my PRS SE Custom 24 stock (G&B) to Seymour-Duncan Alnico Pro Humbuckers (neck and bridge). I think the stock pickups sound dull, I prefer the brightness and harmonics that SD pickups provide. Thanks for the demo SethRoachMusic, it definitely convinced me to make the change!
@CobraFast1

Great comparison Seth. The best I've seen without trying to impress everyone with your playing. Just some chords and the same sample every time. Not sure you have the HFS pickups in the stock SE. My SE's ( I have 3 of them) all have G&B Pickups. In my Semi Hollow body, I swapped for PAF 59 Seymour Duncans and I split them with a push/push tone control. Love the sound. Not sure I'll change my latest, which is an SE Custom 24 30th Anniversary Model. It has the G&B's in it, and I like the sound. Probably the difference of having a solid body rather than the semi hollow. Thanks for the comparison. I really liked it.

The HFS and Vintage bass pickups you used in the comparison - are they original pickups in your SE? If so, they are the "s" version of the PRS HFS and VB pickups from the core line, and it may be important to note that there is a major difference between the two sets.

Seymour definitely sounds brighter with a less scattered sound, but the same can be acheived through some mix like a lil high mid, increase attack through comp and add a gate to get rid of noise...i think so can be tweaked...would be like 19/20

The SD's are better, but I was surprised how well the PRS held up. You certainly don't "need" to upgrade them, as they do a good job for a lower budget pickup. That said, who among us cares about needing vs wanting. I'm looking forward to getting my PRS soon.

I have a Schecter C1 Elite that I took the Duncan Designed HB2 set pickups out (Korean made by G&B?) and replace them with the Seymour Duncan SH-1 '59 model set. There was no comparison- the SD would twice the pickup in tone difference. Not being critical of the demo and appreciate it, but I did not hear enough difference in tone to justify $160 SD upgrade in that guitar. That said, I have a 2017 PRS SE Custom that I will be replacing the stock G&B pickups with the Seymour Duncan SH-1 '59 model set to see if it makes that much difference. I will be using the SD wiring diagram and adding a coil spliitter tone to mine. I will replace all the electronics completely inside the guitar, too. Trying to decide if I am going to use some Sprague 157P creme .022 caps or try some Sprague Orange Drops. Each guitar can sound different with the same pickup in each one. Part of the fun in experimenting!

PRS pups can be pretty inconsistent. When I first played a PRS in the 80s I was very impressed with the stock pickups. But over the years I think they've lost some of the magic. I do like the Narrowfield buckers. They sound great. But even with a Core I'd change the pups, probably to a Duncan Full Shred bridge and Jazz neck.

I ordered 2 alnico ii pros a few days ago (regular, not slash sig.), then you posted this. Great video! I am still debating whether to try the install my self or get a pro. I have no soldering experience. SD only has the wiring diagram for the push/pull volume coil tap, not the push/pull tone coil tap. Did you use a wiring diagram or did you just eyeball it?
@SethRoachMusic
@SethRoachMusic 9 лет назад
Thanks, Joseph! I had no soldering experience either, but I felt like I would rather take the opportunity and time to learn how to do it than hire someone. I found this video most helpful in learning basic soldering techniques: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NUVX_RTS-Z8.html This SD video was helpful also: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--rk9ZEJsUdg.html The SD wiring diagram was a helpful starting point for me, but didn't take me very far because the color coding for PRS pickups is not the same as the color coding for SD pickups. Additionally PRS does not wire the PRS SE Custom 24 in a traditional way. Are you going to install your new pickups into a PRS or a different guitar? So based on some research online and a little common sense, I ended up creating a wiring diagram to help me know how the color codes lined up between the two pickup brands and to help me know what wires to put where. Technically, the diagram worked, but I had an out-of-phase issue when both pickups were activated. I did a little more research and came up with an alternate wiring option in addition to what I already had done. This eliminated the out-of-phase issue and allowed me to finish this pickup comparison video.

There's a weird sound especially when you used heavy distortion, Im pretty sure I know what it is without playing it, like a light buzz with both sets of pups, I think it's your low E string when you do the galloping metal ? Thing you tried to do. listen back, you'll probably hear it. I have a very good ear I've been playing live for over 20 years It's my profession, I notice the little things, maybe you won't hear it but it's definitely their. Again I could only hear it when you used distortion , you seem like a beginner so it's not really a big issue but I thought I'd let you know. There's not a huge difference in sound as well you should have got Bare Knuckle Pups, the mule set or a nail bomb set they are awesome. sounds great in your PRS SE, it's a huge difference when compared to your Duncans. Have a listen to the on SE's on RU-vid with Bare Knuckles. Merry Xmas.

Honestly the Seymours sound a bit more bright not necessarily louder or that much punchier. The stock pickups aren't bad at all. I feel it more subjective to the justification of cost$$$$$$ Honestly I could be happy with either.. And I could tweek those stock PRS pickups to make them brighter with just a few tricks like changing magnets and tone caps ect for a fraction.. Honestly your cutting hairs....

What is that pedal set on? It killed your tone when you went to distorted. I could barely tell a difference, whereas clean and dirty I could hear a very pronounced one. Have you tried tube dirt with a tubescreamer?
@SethRoachMusic
@SethRoachMusic 9 лет назад
txixm I had the input gain setting on the mic too high. When hitting the heavy distortion, it clipped pretty bad and made for not as good a comparison as the clean and dirty sounds. I've not tried tube dirt with a tubescreamer. Is that compatible to a heavier distortion tone?
@txixm
@txixm 9 лет назад
SethRoachMusic Yeah. If you use the distortion your amp makes and add the TS it will increase the amount of distortion, but it will still be the sound of your guitar and amp's distortion instead of the pedal making the tone sound completely different.

Thanks for video. Seymors are better on clean. You distorted sound is clipped so much and they both are bad.

Current PRS pickups are better than these, but I think Duncan wins anyway. I don’t care for coil taps period. Change guitars !

You can pick the gmb's up for about $30 on reverb which are a cheap version of the real thing. That being said if you were going to buy the pickup you would likely by the HFS version which are a better pick up then the super distortions. That is the real comparison.

Wow, The Seymour Duncan pickups sound like the real thing, The PRS sound like Gibson pickups kind of dull and lifeless. I put a set of SD A Jazz in the Neck position and a Jeff Beck in the bridge of my PRS. And I can get any sound I want. The Seymour Duncan pickups brought the guitar to life. The PRS pickups just sound boxy and very limited, the SD brought out the tone of the guitar.

What brand of locking tuners do any you guys recommend? I got a SE I'm replacing severalitems on.

I thought about replacing my tuners at some point, though my PRS holds tune well enough for what I play on it. The PRS tuners in the American made models seem to be pretty top notch from what I understand. Those can be bought separately on their website and from other places. I'm sure there's other great quality replacement tuners to put in the SE models.

my PRS SE Santana holds tune really well even on ridculous dive bombs - you have to re-slot the nut for your specific string gauge

This demo is not demoing his technique....it's for demoing the sound of the pickups. You don't need to "play good" in order to do this effectively.

The stock pickups sound better, the Duncans sound muddy in comparison.

Robert Ruiz I can see how the Duncans may sound muddy. And I wonder how it may have compared if I had installed Duncans without the nickel covers.

You done goofed. The PRS pickup sounded better. I see people changing Gibson and PRS pickups for Seymour Duncan's as if they are actually better SMH

I don't see why PRS would even put the pickups in there guitars they use. They are just not a professional pickup if your playing simple stuff like ACDC or some kiddy distortion stuff it doesn't really matter what pickups you have I guess because all your sound is coming from the pedals. anyone that would say the PRS pickups are better is just not understanding what they are hearing or just have not had the experience to know what is good and what is not.

Nathan Clay dude these are not Paul Reed Smith pickups. PRS SE is the South Korean made affordable brand. Play a real 3000 dollar Paul Reed Smith Custom 24 or McCarty clean on the neck pickup: it's pretty much the most beautiful tone ever. The 3000 dollar Gibson Les Pauls sound outstanding too.
