Had the stock 85/15 pickups removed from my PRS SE and replaced them with a Seymour Duncan JB Trembucker / 59 Set. I am using my iPhone XR to record all audio and it is not filtered in any way.
My PRS SE Custom 24 with SD Hotrodded Humbuckers (JB and Jazz) is a Van Halen Machine through my Boss Katana Brown Channel. It is really fun. The tremolo is good enough (with PRS locking tuners) to do some dive bombs and light pull ups.
I hated the SE muddy sound when playing with distortion, and thought the pickups were bad. Then I found out that the problem stemmed from the volume pot saturating the sound like an overdriven preamp. Turning the knob to 6 instead of 10 fixes it.
If the want PRS style switching flip the magnet on bridge pickup and swap the hot and ground leads. You can then have the neck screw coils toward the headstock and the screw coils activated on the bridge in split mode. This is what PRS does with their pickups.
I have the same amp. I find a bit bottom heavy. I assume that that’s why the treble was a bit. I also have same guitar. I still have not made my decision about the stock pups. I loved the way it all sounded in your vid. I wish it was a bit longer though. Thanks for sharing. Give me your thoughts about the amp being bottom heavy please. Oh I don’t have the Floyd rose trem though. I find the PRs to be very nice. That’s why I purchased it.
the prs pickups were coil tapped not split. using a a resister to keep part of the second coil in. the Duncans can be split so I assume you changed the electronics.
Sounds great. Did you replace the 85/15's because they were too bright? What didn't you like about them. I am thinking of doing the same as you because I noticed right away how bright and harsh they were. Love the guitar but hate what is coming out. Thanks
Yes pretty much how I felt about the 85/15’s. They were not only harsh but thin sounding. Clean tones were ok but outside of that exactly what you pointed out.
The nut is problem. You can try sanding it with the sting in the sandpaper. Just sand the sides. Best bet is to replace the nut with one that is not plastic.
I have a PRS se custom 24 floyd exotic wood edition. Would I need a trembucker in bridge position? It has 85/15 s pickups in it already and I find them supper muddy and characterless.
Standard JB Humbucker should be fine. I purchased the Trembucker actually without checking first and worked out fine as far as spacing. www.seymourduncan.com/blog/tips-and-tricks/string-spacing-explained-humbuckers-vs-trembuckers#:~:text=If%20you're%20not%20sure,inches%2C%20you%20need%20a%20Trembucker.
samuel chapaval What do you like to play, style of music, tone preferences? I liked this pairing cause I can pretty much cover what I like to play and the JB and 59 are a popular pairing. The stock pickups for me were thin / harsh sounding.
@@samuelc2399 Then this would be a good pairing then. I tried to show you can easily get a decent clean tone with even dialing back the volume on the guitar and when it was turned up to 10 I got a great dirty tone for hard rock and metal.
Can I ask how you have the 59 wired? I got the jb/59 set for my SE but for the life on me can get the 59 neck pickup wiring right. I'm wiring to the lowest lug on the tone and then grounding to tone pot but not getting output
@@sweetmercy6987 I ran everything to the tone knob. Its grounded to the pot and the hot runs to the same tab the red and white wires for the bridge pickup run to.
These don't sound all that different than the stock zebra prs pickups I'm looking to upgrade in this guitar, and the jb was the pickup I had in mind. Hmm 🤷♂️
