I have played for 20 years and I’m pretty darn good, not like Petrucci but maybe someday soonish, and I didn’t watch him play until last year. Some of us just do our own thing and only reach out for inspiration. What an inspiration he is as well!

Yeah... Panic Attack doesnt change up much at all... It is a banging song though. Dance of Eternity, Metropolis Pt. 1, The Glass Prison are just some of the ones to look at for mad change ups. But that prog metal for ya!
These dudes ARE classic trained. The original band met at Berklee. Mike Myung was a violinist and changed because, well... 4 strings is 4 strings. These gentlemen are Masters of their craft and placing them in a box because of the genre is very narrow minded. The world is filled with wonderment, open your eyes and look outside your comfort zone. And that applies to more than music my friend.

Went to a Dream Theater concert and heard more notes in that two hours than I had heard in five or six other shows. These guys are masters of their chosen instruments. Welcome to Dream Theater.
Another fact is that Dream Theater concerts normally are much longer than 2 hours - Most are around 3 1/2. Their perfection is outstanding and their songs are absolutly high end in a composing point of view.
The power of Light is the message i get. "Ilumination Theory" from the same concert is lyrically profound, the keyboardist even breaks out the Keytar for a battle with Petrucci it's seriously good music dude. "Breaking all Illusions" again from the same concert is a must, absolutely *BEAUTIFUL* solo from Petrucci. They have 12 ALBUMS of different themes. You're just tipping the iceberg if you like anything about this song. Best DT song was written by the bass player John Myung, "Learning to Live", it's the outro to the epic 'Images and Words' album from the early 90's. I always come back to this band, they are modern Beethoven or Mozart imo

Petrucci is our greatest living lead guitar player, in my humble opinion. There's Vai, there's Satriani, there's Malmsteen, there's Paul Gilbert, yes, there's so many...but Petrucci to me is the most consistently clean and accurate live, no matter how complex the part is, and he's also got - in my opinion - the most soul behind his playing of all the current virtuosic players. His ability is off the charts, but he always serves the song. He does his tricks and his speed picking, but it always feels like it has heart and soul and isn't just playing mechanically. @@psilocinesthesia And there's an argument to be made there. But I stand by what I said. I think Pettucci innovated on Lifeson. Lifeson is of course probably the most influential. But Pettucci took everything Lifeson was great at and took it up another level in technique. Actually, Malmsteen would probably still argue he was best. 😂
Petrucci wasn’t even doing half of what he can really do in this song. And yes, a lot of their songs have very uplifting, inspiring and positive messages. That’s the vibe you were picking up on. They’re a total class act of next level musicians. Try “Illumination Theory” from the same show. 👍
If you take a minute and think about it, Progressive rock/metal, etc.is the largest genre in music today. Like it or not, it will not be going away anytime soon. I'm glad I was born before the birth of this style so I could experience it from the beginning...

Welcome to Dream Theater. DT has been my favorite for many years. If you really want to be blown away, check out "Dance of Insturmedley". Other reactors have reacted to it and Dream Theater does not block it. That piece of music is a conglomeration of 14 or so of their intrumentals and lead sections from their most popular songs. Absolutely astounding the musicianship on display in that video. That video also features their original drummer, Mike Portnoy. Mike Mangini is a very techinally perfect drummer, but I feel that Portnoy is a bit better. That is an argument that many a Dream Theater fan has had with another Dream Theater fan....lol. Other good ones are "Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper", "The Glass Prison" and "Under a Glass Moon". I just discovered your channel here, and will continue to check out your vids. It's crazy that every member is considered among the best for each respective instrument. The only exception might be James, the vocalist, though he's still iconic. Jordan Rudess (keyboard) is typically regarded as one of the best of all time. If you want full on instrumental awesomeness, check out Liquid Tension Experiment. The lyrics on this songs cannot be understood on its own. The lyrics are from Dream Theaters former drummer Mike Portnoy, who used to be an alcoholic but managed to get sober through AA. So there are multiple songs in DTs catalog that deal with his alcohol addiction and how he managed to beat it and they are all tried together lyrically und musical even though they are on different albums (Starting with Six-Degrees of Inner Turbulence). And this is one of them, so that is also why it has so many different parts, because it references earlier songs.
Since you’re really into guitar solos and specifically ones with a mix of melodic elements and shredding, then I would HIGHLY recommend Hollow years live and The Best of Times. Petrucci displays his excellence and brilliance on those songs to the highest degree in my opinion.

You've gotta react to Under a Glass Moon. In a lot of people's opinion it has John Petrucci's best solo. Also I wonder if you've heard of Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson, similar sound in many ways to DT but also very different in some ways. Since you enjoyed this so much, I think you will really be astounded by just how much music as good as this is out there. Enjoy the journey, the suggestions and requests will soon overwhelm you!

Good first songs as an intro to Dream Theater: Pull Me Under, Scarred, Dance of Eternity, Nightmare to Remember, As I Am... Maybe even Lost Not Forgotten (personal fav). Shattered Fortress is a weird choice because it's an amalgamation of 5 other songs.
That knob on the keyboard is basically like a whammy bar, to bend the notes. They're pretty standard on synthesizers. The song is part 5 of a 5-part series about recovery and redemption from alcoholism. The whole series of songs is almost an hour long if played back to back.
Yeah, this was the last of a long suite of songs about their (prior) drummer going through AA. Hence all of the prayers, uplifting lyrics, etc. To see the whole journey, give "The Glass Prison" a try - darker, at the beginning of the journey. If you want some "lighter" stuff, try (ahem) "The Dark Eternal Night". It's Lovecraft-inspired. :)

@@talknrock9005 , I've been fortunate. If you ever get to go to the Orpheum, do not get seats under the balcony, the high end of the sound gets cutoff under there, either be out from underneath or up in front rows of the balcony. But overall a pretty good place to see bands.
Metal is actually rarely negative, and usually has some of the deepest most philosophical messages you'll hear in music. The stereotype that it's usually hate-filled stems from religious fundamentalism and WASP culture looking for something to demonize during the height of it's popularity, judging it by screaming, how angry it sounds and how popular it was with the youth. I won't say metal about hatred, Satan and darkness doesn't exist, because it absolutely does, but there are also bands that live up to metal stereotypes that exist solely to spite those that hate the genre for those reasons alone.
There is Wikipedia to know history of every band. People are so lazy to even type and search these days. Back in the pre historic days before internet and Google search, we had to buy rock magazine monthly and read to know about bands and their stories.
You should check some Haken :) Earthrise is a nice song. Also Periphery, Circus Maximus, Devin Townsend and Intervals. I recommend Circus Maximus's song "Architect of Fortune". If u wanna check more Dream Theater I recommend some Live at Budokai stuff.
Great video, check out Killswitch Engage if you think the idea of heavy music and positive messaging don't go to together. Killswitch can get pretty hardcore yet the lyrics are always super positive, also one of my favorite bands.

I'm sure someone already mentioned, but this song is about Mike Portnoy's (former drummer's) battle with alcoholism. The lyrics are based on the twelve step program. However, when you mentioned all the changes, you should know that this song includes several riffs from the predecessors which began this story (this is the conclusion of a five part rock opera that has spanned several albums) such as the "Glass Prison" where this all started, "this dying soul," "the root of all evil," "repentance," and finally, "the shattered fortress." I did see one commenter mention that this is nothing compared to what John is capable of, and that commenter is absolutely right. This is very straight forward compared to his capabilities. Listen to "Take the Time" and "Illumination Theory." Good reaction, but recommend you do your homework before doing a video. At least know the names... James LaBrie - vocals, John Myung - bass, Jordan "the wizard" Ruddess - keys and synth, John Petrucci - guitars, and Mike Mangini - percussion.
