I met him at the Pittsburgh airport in 1985 when I was in the Air force on a layover to JFK. Walked over and shook his hand and introduced myself, I remember his hand was so huge I felt like a child shaking an adults hand. When we loaded the plane to my surprise he sat right in the seat behind me. I talked to him the entire flight, he didn't know me from Adam, we talked like he knew me my entire life. No a bit of ego or conceit in the guy, hell he even was asking me questions about my life. He even bought my drinks, wouldn't let me pay at all. What a great guitarist and even a better human being. R.I.P. Stevie...G.O.A.T.
The Vaughan family is cool saw him and Jimmy Ray both in Austin. I'm from Atlanta Texas from down the street came Down Henley and Roscoe Beck. TBone WALKER Scott Joplin
He uses crazy thick strings. Starting with 13 gauge. I've toured for over 25 years playing guitar and played thousands of shows. Every time I watch this concert I want to throw my guitars in the wood stove. Nobody can touch him. Just a blessed human being.
Crazy that I just found this today, as it’s 33 years today that Stevie flew on back to Heaven. Loved your reaction! Listen to the song again, knowing that sounds he was making with his guitar were representing the pain of the sudden death of his dear friend Charlie. The white guitar he switches to was a gift from Charlie, hand made for Stevie Ray. ❤️ Donna G
I watched this show when I was 17. Solid boss!!! I knew I was seeing greatness. No one can play like this man. So much connection to the audience. Just incredible. I’ll never forget that feeling. Rip brother.
Rock guitar legend, Eric Clapton said he was blown away with how Stevie could play without taking a break. Eric said that when most guitar players play a solo they need to resort to playing chords so that they can figure out what direction they want to go in next. Eric also said that Stevie could channel the music from where ever it is that Stevie’s mind goes, down through his soul and into his hands. My brother saw Stevie two weeks before he died in a helicopter crash. Stevie and his band Double Trouble opened for Joe Cocker that night. My brother said he had never heard of Stevie Ray Vaughn before that concert and left being a huge Stevie fan.
Throughout this song, stevie switched guitars, picked his pick up that he dropped, adjust amps multiple times, plays behind his back, give a motivational speech, plays with his teeth, loses a tooth while playing with his teeth, looks around for tooth all w/o missing a beat. It safe to say that SRV is the best, the GOAT
@@bewl2641 I always wondered why he used electrical tape to hold that board together. It always got stomped, kicked and beaten on to the point he had to fiddle with it....habit I guess
The sole reason in my opinion that Stevie is the best guitarist ever is his ability to move you,to make you feel the music in your soul. Jimi was awesome truly he was but Stevie just does something to the human soul that puts him above the rest.
He played with gage 13 strings. He went into rehab in the fall of 1986 at the same time as bassist Tommy Shannon, his best friend. He helped many people into sobriety. He was a humble gentle soul as a man and a ferocious guitarist. I so admire him in so many ways.
He wrote this song in dedication to his good friend Charley Wertz of Charlie's guitar shop in Dallas, who passed away. The white guitar he switched to is named Charlie. He built that guitar in the early 80's for Stevie before he died.
There is really nothing to say when you hear such a great performance from SRV. The expression on your face said it all- you were obviously so moved you were literally holding back tears. SRV didn't play music, he was the music and it just flowed out of him with no effort at all. It's not just the technical ability (a lot of guitar players can be just as good technically), it's the feeling and how he expressed it with such feeling. As you said, every note is perfectly placed and executed in ways that noboy else will ever be able to duplicate. It was really great to see your thoughts and reaction to this video because you are a guitar player and can appreciate and know what it takes for SRV to get those sounds out of that strat. Most all other people reviewing this video know for sure that they are hearing something truly great, but they don't understand why like you do. One reviewer summed it up perfectly- what is the point of taking guitar lessons after hearing SRV.
The strength in his hands was just wild. Playing for him was as natural as speaking English is for us. He'll always be a testament to the love of music, and what can be accomplished when you put in an absurd amount of time and effort.
New sub ,my all time favorite, this man had a passion for what he did . He was talking about apartheid and the starving children. He also uses really big strings size 13 I was told almost base size.
I hope you know by now that he could not read or write music. Absolutely natural talent and playing by ear. That's why he was adjusting the strings and the amps, because he could hear the slightest deviation. Legend...
I think you are absolutely right that he is the best guitar player ever recorded. Say it with conviction. you can put some qualifiers in there like in my opinion, or I think just in case there is someone else out there that I haven't heard but in my 59 and a half years he is the best I have ever heard.
Saw him in 86. I was considered a really good guitar player in my day, always felt I could play with most. But after Stevie. His masterful use of tone. I couldn't stop staring a his hands as he made blink-of -an -eye changes to volume and tone. He was the all time best with the wah and would use phrasing with the volume and tone controls and the swithches. My friend looked at me and said " WTF did we just see!" I'll tell you. Time to put the guitars away. No sense in it anymore.
So good SRV can bring you to tears, for you can feel his soul is directly linked to instruments 🎸 he holds in his hands. He is one with the guitar, your feeling his soul speak to us. That’s why sometimes listen to him can bring me to tears
Exactly...me too...tears come out of my eyes often when I watch him play...there was something very special with Stevie Ray...I mean besides that he was the Goat...he was a special soul...he was just light...shining and shining...I guess some souls come here to show us,You know...
@Christopher&Frederik- I also find myself tearing up listening to Stevie's magick. The emotion flows so easily when he plays. It's just amazing. Some lyrics have done that for me, but he is the only musician whose sound has put me in my real house and make it almost a religious experience. This is why I believe that SRV really was a gift from the Lord, a true force of nature. I like to call him the Texas Tornado.
Love your appreciation of the man's skills AND the kind of man he was. He was known for his kindness & how humble he was. As for future reactions, I'd love to see you do any of the songs Stevie did on his 2nd appearance on Austin City Limits (1989). Especially that particular version of "Mary Had A Little Lamb" & "Voodoo Chile". Your channel may be small now but keep going. You have a pleasant personality. And a lot of people roam around RU-vid looking for reactions to favorite artists (like SRV & Queen!). Things could definitely pick up.💙
My favorite SRV song & performance! There's zero question who the greatest guitarist of all time is. I truly appreciated your great reaction. Have you ever seen the documentary on his life? It's really really good. I'll add link for it & another for his guitars. They all had names. ❤ Keep practicing! SRV would want you to, I'm sure!
Srv was using Hendrix wa wa pedal and run his guitar through two amps set up dual. He had 13 gauge custom strings on his guitar made for him by a piano maker
It is said that Stevie used heavy 13 gauge strings with an elevated bridge. There is a reactor that plays guitar and he played an exact replica of Stevie’s Stratocaster, set up the same way Stevie set his guitar up, and he said he couldn’t play more than five minutes before his fingers couldn’t take it any more.
I love seeing you and your reaction so BEAUTIFUL!! AND THE RESPECT YOU HAVE FOR HIM .. I LOVE SEEING THAT TOO!! IM GLAD YOU CAN APPRECIATE GREATEST AT ITS FINEST!!! .. KEEP REACTING TO HIM!! PLEASE CHECK OUT SCUTTLE BUTTN..& RUDE MOOD!!!
You got it. Honest, emotional (admittedly or not you felt it 😊) reaction. My first time watching and you got the trifecta like subscribe notification. I hope your channel grows because every person you reach that you can bring SRV into their lives is a tribute to his memory. He was just getting there and had not begun to peak. He reached a newfound clarity and there’s no telling where he would’ve gone with his music and message. So here you are carrying it on. Best wishes.
In order to get to Stevie’s stratospheric level of playing ability you have to first be madly in love with playing your guitar. Secondly, you have to eat, sleep and breath it. Lastly, you must make personal sacrifices and be extremely self discipled.
This is my all time favorite performance of his🎶‼️. I really enjoyed your heart felt and respectful reaction👏🙌❣️. He wrote this song for his good friend Charlie Wirz, Dallas guitar shop owner, who passed away suddenly. The lyrics where he talks about "the love you passed our way" was incorporated on his gravestone. I think this night he was even more emotional in performing this and I could never get tired of watching it. First time landing on your channel and will be checking out your content. Thanks for this🎸🎶‼️
He wrote this song for Charlie, and preferred to play this song on the white guitar (also named Charlie) that Charlie built for him which is the reason for the switch.
Real players recognize real. Pros wouldn't ever say a sly word about SRV. People have different styles they prefer though. The fans usually cause the feuding.
He changed the Guitar because the Song is made for Charley Wirtz, who passed away in the same year(1985) and the guitar was given by him to stevie, so he everytime plays the white guitar (named Charley) the red one is called number one.
13ga strings also helps with the tone. Not that the same string, hell same guitar in the hands of anyone else could sound as pure as when in the gifted hands of SRV. I'm an old guy so I've seen SRV in concert twice. 1st time I was 15 and didn't know anything about SRV. I was there for the headliner and SRV opened. I was so blown away that not only was I an immediate fan, but I can't even remember who the headliner was. The 2nd time I saw him about 4 months before his copter went down.
His playing of the guitar is out of this world ..........every note he plays is talking to you . Its cool someone of the younger generation appreciates talent from a legend that left us to soon
Thx , i like your reactions ... Thanks, I love it. It's great that the younger generation is looking for the roots. Keep digging, there are many more buried treasures ;-)
he had to superglue his fingertips back on in many gigs because of the heavy piano strings he had the strongest fingers and hands i dont think anybody since has had hands like his. I met himand talked with him at L.A. ex in 86.he even paid for the coffee.
Thank you so much for reacting to SRV-he’s one of my favorites. Also, I very much appreciate your comments-I’ve learned a lot from your! Additionally, you may want to consider reacting to Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart, live-Amsterdam, March 24, 2014, “I’d Rather Go Blind,” I promise you-you won’t be disappointed! Thank you again!
Great feedback! This is my favourite SRV and Double trouble song! And this live performance reminds me why I loved this song this best so many years ago Keep going BRO!
He Was how would ya'll like to grow up with em. He's my brother. ❤❤ I miss em every day. Especially at night. My brother was everything to me. ❤❤ I will NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN. ❤❤ AUGUST IS A REALLY TUFF MONTH FOR ME I USUALLY CRY MY SELF TO SLEEP EVERY YEAR FOR THE PAST 35 YEARS. I BE LIKE THIS TILL THE DAY I DIE. STEVIE WILL ALWAYS BE MY #NO. 1. ❤❤
Yes. He adjusted his amp because not many ppl notice that he switched guitars in the of performing this song the camera didnt show. Look at the guitar he started with. Then yul see his guitar tech helped connect the strap on it for him! Amasing
Steve stood alone on his guitar style playing but he even would say that his hero was Jimi Hendrix and if you listen to his solo or just hammer offs and picker offs and slide all Jimi vibe a big influence but so sad three years clean and he was taken I mean nobody should be taken at any moment but it is death that there is no cure for so thank you Steve for your own pallets of songs and playing and bringing Jimi's Hendricks guitar like no one else can bar none R I P
The reason that SRV Changed guitars is because of the Song that he was playing, (not a broken string).. SRV wrote this song,"Life Without You," " for a very dear friend of his that had recently passed away AND it just so happens that this deceased friend built that guitar, by hand, just for SRV, so it is only fitting that he play this guitar, (named "Charlie"), for this Song! If you haven't guessed it yet, his friend was named "Charlie." There is so much more going on here than SRV simply playing a song. Keep Smiling...
Cat in the hat with a strat. Friggin' 12 gauge strings. Even the top guitarists, including Eric Clapton, admit Stevie was the greatest there ever was. Who am I to argue. Watch the 2015 Hall of Fame induction ceremony. I wish you would pause before talking so we hear what you're saying and you don't miss little nuances of his playing. We can watch the video all the way through anytime. We're here for reactions. No one ever seems to notice when he's playing one handed. Blows me away when he does that. Glad to see the young people discovering and appreciating him. How about you do Cold Shot ---> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m2ou-WIxfLY.html
Don't think like that. Ɓut you gotta play that guitar for 6 to 7 hours a day. That's what Stevie did. I'm his Little Sister. Check out 3rd stone from the sun. At El Macombo. It will blow your mind. Or try the Festial. You see what he does a bit better. ❤ My name is Kiya Lynn Vaughan. Plesed to meet ya. ❤Much Love to ya'll. ❤❤❤❤. Boy i can tell ya'll some story's. He took me all over the world. I was there for every show he ever did.❤❤ i'm so proud to say he's my Brother. ❤❤ He was Alwasome! ❤❤ I will never forget em and I will Miss em' with the same passion and heart he had for playin' them guitar's. ❤❤❤❤ He was my Best Friend anybody could ever have.❤❤❤❤ I Miss em with ALL MY HEART AND SOUL!! ❤❤❤❤ PEACE YA'LL❤❤❤❤
I praise you in the name of Jesus for your pure praise of brother Stevie. It is a tribute to his family and the angels in heaven that you bestow your respect two this legend. Praise be to you and your family for the admiration that you give in this possible fashion. May the Lord of angels bestow his love and blessings upon you and your RU-vid channel. May the world love and embrace you for what you have done for me in time. You are the greatest.
When he was using his teeth to play, one of them came out. You can see him saying it to his crew and I believe he spends several moments looking down at the stage to find it. He can’t. All he does is smile and kind of laugh and keep on playing unbelievably well.
Great reaction. Stevie was as humble and kind as he was talented. I wish you’d met him. You’d have loved him more. Have you done “Tin Pan Alley” with Stevie Ray and Johnny Copeland? Check it out. Keep up the good work. Donna G
... Yea, you know, I bought myself two guitars recently. I'm thinking about taking them both back, because no matter what I do, I can't get them to sound anything like SRV. So they might be broken, or something... I don't know? I'm just joking with you about my guitars. I was just hoping it might make you smile or ? Anyway, be good to yourself and remain Healthy & reasonably Happy too. Keep Smiling... Cheers...
I believe he changed guitars because Charlie built that guitar for him and it was the best way to honor his memory. Don’t know if that was the reason, but I like to think it.
Yep, you're right. SRV wrote this song about his dear friend that passed away suddenly. His name was "Charlie." Charlie hand built that White Guitar just for his friend, SRV, and that's why he switched to it, in his friend's honor. Incidentally, this Guitar is Named "Charlie" too. It's only fitting that SRV play this Guitar for this song, written in honor of his friend that passed, Charlie.
He usually played Strats. Hes THE strat Cat imo. Using sise 13 strings!!!! Playing LIKE THAT!! OMG! I AM in AWE of him. The best that EVER was n STILL IS. WE'LL NEVER hv another like HIM in a single lifetime So don't worry about competing w/THE GOAT. Who can? NO ONE
Did you notice the guitar switch and that he lost a tooth during this performance?? -Yeah, his magic playing magically made that dissapear... but look again... :D
Stevie would tell you “keep trying.” In his sweet quiet voice. Also, how do you tune your guitar? He tuned his down to Eflat. What size strings do you use? I think he used 11gage custom strings on Charlie, but I know on -#1 and Lenny he used 13.
No he didn’t break a string. That white guitar name is Charlie because a guy named Charlie made it for him and this song is about Charlie as he died suddenly and unexpectedly. The long story made short when SRV did Charlie’s song he used Charlie’s guitar.
... because SRV's dear friend "Charlie" built that White Guitar, by hand, specifically for SRV. This Song was written by SRV, in honor of his dear friend, Charlie, and that's why this Guitar is named "Charlie too. Later... Keep Smiling... Cheers...
Without a doubt my fav player, on a scale of 1 to 10 for that guitar gut wrenching effect, guess that would be around the billion mark!!!! if ya looking for other amazing gut wrenching solos in different styles check out Lindsey Buckingham / Fleetwood Mac live 85 The Chain, yeah this stuff although inspiring kinda wants ya to take the guitar back to the shop and tell em it ain't workin' there's obviously lots of notes missing!!! ;-)
He usees 13 gage strings. But you should use 11's. And Stevie worked at it 4 7 hours a day everyday fot 365 days a year. You put the time into somethin' you love it's gonna show. The more you work at it the better ya'll will get at it. ❤❤ That's what my brother did. ❤❤ ya'll can do it to just work at it. Where are you from? Go down to Austin Texas and see where Tommy Katona is playin' he will try and help ya'll he's a good guy. ❤❤ Check out Stevie Ray Vaughan live at the festival a song called 3rd stone from the sun. Mind Blower.❤❤
He's a Great Brother 2. ❤ He will always be my Best Friend. ❤ I LOVE em to Death. ❤❤ Check out Stevie Ray live at El Mocombo 3rd Stone from the Sun. WARNIN MIND BLOWER ALERT ⚠️ ❤ See what Stevie Ray can really do with that Guitar. Think you'll will really like it. ❤
Try you some Gary Moore. I like red house or still got the blues, but he had a wide and diverse catalog of music. Another would be good is Alvin Lee. I could go on, but there's two to get you going. Read up on the red axe Gary plays it's got a distinct sound, and there's a reason why.
