You may be completely used to them adding glossy top coat to your few nails when you get them done, but they don't have to. I'm a nail tech myself, and I just happened upon this video, and I think if they just buffed them slightly they would look more natural, or maybe a matte topcoat instead of a glossy one. I also do a service for men, it's usually for extreme biters, so it must look extremely natural, and I use a 4 sided buffing block to add a bit of shine and get all scratches out of the acrylic nails, or a matte top coat polish to have no shine at all depending on what they prefer. You may just want to mention it to the Vietnamese woman the next time you go, so you don't get weird looks at the pub with a pint, or with a cuppa somewhere.

What does something like this cost? I am desperate. My nails have sopped growing, are chipping and 'divoting' constantly every time I play. Having proper shaped nails is critical to my live performances. Can you help me?
@richellmcknight446
@richellmcknight446 4 года назад
@@chuckkirkpatrick6712 I'm sure you've had it done by now, but if NOT, well, depends on where you live, and how much you have done- my suggestion is have them do the powder THIN and BUFF them, don't do a gel top coat or polish. I'm female and LIKE my nails pretty, but I found that if I do powder on BOTH hands, with my fretting hand nails trimmed really short, and tips on my strumming hand, it works better, and looks uniform. Then have them finished with the buffing wheel, as that will last a long time. 😉😁💖

Richell Mcknight - Hey there, do you happen to know if one can do this powder acrylic thing with the picking hand even if the nailsare still too short for picking, or do you need to glue on a fake nail tip like they did here? I'm getting a bit tired of just using my finger tips but I'm not really able to grow my nails before the break etc. Also, is this something than can be done at home? Thanks for any help :)

@saruniz
@saruniz 2 года назад
@@petterhouting7484 yes! You can minimize the damage by making sure the nail tech removes them properly but ultimately the chemicals aren’t good for you in the long term no matter how good your tech is.

JUSTIN: Although this video is a few years old, I have some important things to say about acrylic nail extensions that I hope a few may still see. First I want to say how much I appreciate you as a music teacher. Besides Andy of "Shutup & Play", you are one of the top great teachers on RU-vid. I came to this particular video because, frankly, I was hoping to see some practical options for fake nails other than acrylic versions. I, too, have brittle nails that keep breaking. In my case, out of exasperation, I decided to to have some fake nails put on about 12-14 months ago . . . the same type of acrylic nail extensions as shown on your video. What I've loved about my acrylic nails is how easy, natural feeling and care-free picking had become. I've since learned, however, that the bad part of acrylic extensions (especially if continually "renewed") is that they can be detrimental to the health of your natural nail bed -- mainly softening and weakening nail outgrowth. So that others know -- it's recommended that you have your fake nails removed periodically to allow your natural nails to "breathe". I guess one of the unexpected benefits of COVID19 is that because I have not been able to have my acrylic nails "renewed" for over three months now, they have all fallen off -- hence my search for alternatives!
@listairgin

Thanks for sharing this information about the natural nail being being softened etc. I need something like this myself as I play with my nails also on down strokes to keep rhythm etc. If you have found any alternative please let me know. Many thanks 👍

Watch a video by Kai Narezo, I think his method is better. I just got these and they suck for tone(I know that sounds weird). They're super super thick and do not give at all. Nazaro is using fiberglass and a glue that's like CA. He's using his real nails as a base and the fiberglass simply gives them more strength, but still seem sortof flexible, like naturals. I'm going to try it with fake nails to see if it works with the CA glue method. CA can be put on much thinner than this stuff and it's very strong. Try it both ways though, you'll see what I mean. Gel nails get damaged and weakened by water easily. Mine are 1.5 wks old and I've already had to file them down quite a bit b/c they keep chipping and peeling off. I play Flamenco, but nothing crazy yet, just light arpeggios and a little up/down strumming. The nails should last longer imo.

Clear plastic drink bottle cut roughly to nail size, some ultraviolet activated glue and a small uv lamp( i use the type they use for puttin bevels on glass) nail file, some clear nail varnish. Job is oxo, save yourself some money. Tip from james taylor: for nail health, leave 5,6 or 7 ml at base of nail😉

I play country guitar every weekend and fake nails are essential on my index and third finger- along with with my thumb pick to get the sound I need. Real nails can't hold up at all. It's what separates the wanna-be's from the real players. I've done gels and glue ons- they would last one gig and break- sometimes not even a full gig. This was good information to watch how he built up the compound. My girlfriend was a bit weirded out at first, but she got over it! Thanks Justin!

I've been having my nails done with this exact process for several years now. Yes, it still feels a bit awkward each time I go to the Vietnamese nail shop, but it's worth it. I have them do all but the pinky of my picking hand...usually $15 + tip. They usually last about 4-6 weeks. I never have any gloss coat applied, so they look "almost" natural. The only issue I have is that they are so thick that don't sound as natural as natural nails, especially when strumming. But my nails are just too damn thin and break easily. I play both fingerstyle acoustic and electric 90% of the time, rarely using a pick anymore. Still looking for a better option than acrylic. I have a box full of every type of fingerpick made...just can't get used to any of them. BTW, I bought an acrylic nail kit for doing my own nails at home...bad decision! I was certain I could do my own after years of watching the process. Wrong! What a mess! There is a real art to doing nails. Worth the relatively low expense.

Back in the late 60's we use to put layers of tissue paper alternating with nail varnish creating about 6 to 7 layers. Once dried, you would cut to shape and file , And you think you get funny looks TODAY!!!!!!
@jackhammer111
@jackhammer111 6 лет назад
I did that for a long time. With gel nails I found the scratched and became rough enough to make the string bark, and they kept breaking because I do more than play guitar. I broke on on vacation in florida and found someone to fix it and was telling him of the roughness problem and breaking to easy. He said he could easily fix that and he did. He added a layer of hard liquid acrylic on top an on the tip. The stuff you have to harden under UV light. I creates a smooth as glass finish that was very hard and made the nail stronger. I played for years that way and it added a dimension to the way I could play but in the end 2 problems made me take them off. One is that when I moved I had trouble finding someone who knew what they were doing and could speak enough English to do them exactly the way I wanted. The other was I had used straight picks for decades that were somewhere between the equivalent of a fender thin and a fender medium. Specifically a Dunlop Tortex .50 mm or a .60 mm. The point is they had some flexibility to them. Playing with fake nails is like play with a hard pic. There is no flexibility in the nail. There is no way to duplicate the attack of a flexible pic with fake nails.

I do the same, playing rock/country picking. You can rough them up slightly to take off the gloss finish using an ink rubber.. I finish them down barely over the skin on finger ends so I get a louder. even sound but no 'catching'. Barely noticeable, but at 6ft n 110kg+ Ex boxer, I don't worry about derogatory comments. I just had nails put on for the first time yesterday (for classical and flamenco) and it has been a revelation. My tone is so much better now. My natural nails are really thin and weak so I have tried nail strengtheners and supplements to varying degrees of success but I really love these fake nails! A couple of questions though - the lady who put them on asked me how thick I wanted to make them and I just reflexively asked her to make them thick and strong. Is there any advantage to having them a little thinner? Also - Do they harm the nails underneath over time?
@lensmith9106
@lensmith9106 5 лет назад
Thicker nails will sound more like a plastic pick than the softer sound of real nails. I guess it's probably the difference in flexibility due to the difference in thickness. So it just depends on what kind of sound you're going for.

I used acrylic for years but the do have issues… generally nail techs have little or no understanding of guitar players… there are different acrylics and some are very hard and brittle. For fingerstyle these affect tone and can chip and crack. I have switched to SNS which are more healthy to the nail bed and the thickness control is better. And you can have a matte finish on both…

I have very weak fingernails which I also sometimes bite. I've never had the opportunity to even try and play with my fingernails. I've always used bare skin or a pick. This does seem a little drastic as I'd be experimenting with a new play style that might not suit me and would require repeated maintenance if I decided to make it a normal aspect of my playing.

I've been doing this for years. Don't give it another thought. When entering the shop, I usually announce my color choice to shock the onlookers who might question my commitment to heterosexuality. But I really just use a natural nail with no color obviously. I usually tip well, the ladies that work at the shop know me and are happy to see me since it's quick work on four fingers...sometimes five if I forget to stop them. It's invaluable for me since my nails would never stand up to Phosphor-Bronze for more than a few hours of rigorous picking.

I too get a nail done. My middle finger for claw-hammer banjo. If I don't my nail will literally wear right through. This is just the opposite though - I'm flicking down over the top of my nail instead of plucking up.

I get the concept, but I would go without the polishing shine if I were to get some applied.

I’ve been using silk overlays on mine (a la James Taylor), usually only my index finger, which gets heavy use as a pick as well. I also garden, so they either break or wear out. After watching this I think I’ll see what a nail tech can do.

Thanks so much for this Justin - At last something that will work! I play mainly acoustic fingerstyle now and I have a long term problem with 2 of my nails that have a split that is kind of built into them. You can see a line running the length of the nail and as soon as the nail grows even just a small amount, the crack opens and then the high E string gets caught in there and its game over! I've tried everything from "Hard As Hoof" from the USA to all the various strengtheners and hardeners on the market. I never tried false nails yet mainly because I'm 6'8" tall with huge hands and I didn't think they would have them big enough but I'm going to give this a go. I couldn't care less what anybody thinks - I just want the best guitar tone I can get. Can you please give a rough idea of cost and how often it needs doing. Thanks again Justin

I saw a video on how James Taylor does it.He uses gauze tape and crazy glue and does it himself.I myself went to nail salon just like this.

They won’t last long if you’re playing a lot. Finger picks are a better option I think. But just for looks👍 fake ones keep me from biting my nails.

I prefer the gels. The gels don't beat up your natural nails as bad as the product he used in this video.

It's not too difficult to learn to do your own. My tech was charging me $20 every two weeks to keep 4 nails in condition. Bought my own set of primer, powder, and liquid, etc. for around $40 and I expect it will last me more than a year. Took a bit of practice to get it down (plus you're doing it with your non-dominant hand!) and they still don't look quite as nice as a professional job, but perfectly functional and I can afford it.

i had them a few times..but i found that when i got them taken off,, my own nails were even softer than they were before...and apparently you have to have them removed now and then so your own nails can sort of breathe...

I'm going to do this. I normally play just fingers but often need to use fingerpicks. I always end up fiddling with them, and would rather a less metallic sound. I'd like claws, frankly

Perhaps I'm an oddball, but I find nothing strange about this. James Taylor carries a small cigar box with his emergency nail supplies to do quick fixes. I plan on giving this a try, and will hope that they don't come off easily. Thanks Justin.

I'm 70 so I'm way past caring what people might think, anyway I've been a nail biter all of my life and since all my teeth have fallen out I've discovered a positive aspect to my toothless grin. My fingernails have grown back but what do I do with these new claws? The right hand is fairly obvious but what about the lefties? They're starting to become a nuisance..

You take all the fun out of cracking jokes by inviting them. lol. I seldom finger pick and only know one pattern so far. If I wanted fake nails however, I'd do them at home and try to make them less shinny and noticeable. I can see how they could help.

👀 you scared me when he put that super long mail on your hand. Aghh 😱 😮😂 Long nails scare me 😟. I remember one time going to the hairdresser and the girl had super long nails. They were so long they curved back around toward the palm of her hand. I was thinking how she gone do my hair? She gone scratch me up like a cat. 🐱 She put the cape on me and I freaked out. Haha 😆 I jumped out the chair and said “i got to go home and take my medication 💊 “. I lied 🤥. I never lie, but like that was my exit plan. Craziness 😂 I hope and pray she didn’t hurt nobody 👀 Thanks for the post. Normally I keep my nails short for the piano 🎹 Yesterday I played my classical guitar with the only melody I remembered. I had ordered these metal slip ins but can’t figure those out. Pretty but not comfortable. Now I wonder if there are nails you can kind of stick on temporarily 🤔 Maybe even in cute colors or something. That way you have a consistent mail length to play on 🤷‍♀️? That way I can take them off. The only aspect of me that should look like the cat woman, is my Halloween costume 😂 💕

Hello Justin, Why wouldn't you use the plastic ot stainless steel finger nail extentions that you can use when you're playing and them take them off?

🙄👏Matteo Mancuso has a few fake nails on his left hand. He just mentioned it on the recent Rick Beato interview. I wouldn't dare laugh at him for the fake nails as he can outplay my sorry guitar ass with both hands tied. To each his own. Ultimately, it's the skill.

Hey Justin, got the same problem, they always seem to crumble down once I grown them out a bit. One question: why do they apply so much on top? Wouldn't it look more natural if they didn't do that?

Bram van Dam I would assume it's the same type of process as creating a foundation in a wall when you put up a shelf, it strengthens it as so it doesn't break off so easily under stress.
