At 1:27 I was thinking NOOOO don't get beer on the guitar, as it was slowly dripping down the side.

I rarely drink, but I love an occasional treat! I have a strap lock on my guitar, but I don't know where my strap is and I don't know what kind of lock it is, do you know of any list of strap lock types that I can look up? It's rather frustrating! I just started guitar a few days ago and I've so far put in 20 hours... I already broke a string!
@conanmiddleton925
@conanmiddleton925 9 лет назад
Schiller make good ones, or schaller style, they are the ones I use. Hmm strings shouldn't really break often, did it break right on the bridge or nut? You might have a burr(bit of sharp metal) that needs sanding out.
@MultiPwolf
@MultiPwolf 9 лет назад
I don't think that's the one I have, I bought this guitar many years ago and only just started getting into it(I was a kid when I bought it and my brother borrowed it... I lost interest!) the strings are a bit rusty. I think the strings are also a little thin for my taste, I ordered thicker ones.. but the real reason I broke it is because I have been using rocksmith to gamify my learning experience, and I kept messing up my bends... I was stupid and screwed it up a tad! But I do keep getting fret buzz, and Im not convinced its because I'm fretting improperly.. Maybe the strings? I'll see how it goes once I replace the strings, and I'll clean it out properly because there is a dust buildup at the bridge. I wish I could find my strap though, It has the lock bits so I cant just buy a new one. Unless I work out what kind of strap lock it is... think it just plugs in and I push the button, but its been so long I cant honestly remember.

yes, use it on both sides. doesn't matter where the strap button is placed, even on an SG where it's on the back of the guitar. Use it. The straplocks actually enable you to do some cool tricks like throwing your guitar around your back and catching it again.

Thanks Justin. I've been fashioning my own version of home made strap locks for years like various flat plastics (like the flat bread bag tags) , or whatever would snap over stock buttons.Fender now sells the Grolsch bottle washer for about $1 (US) each, and is actually much cheaper than buying the beer. New Schaller S Locks have a thicker strap side shaft for leather straps, and a heavier (thicker) body side button screw that is helpful if your old screw was stripped or wallerd out, but may be a little tight in a small standard hole. Locks are a must have for you young hair band rockers doing the guitar acrobatics. Thanks again!

I actually broke my foot because I didn't have strap locks. I was standing up playing, and I sat down to adjust the amp. When the tension was relieved, the button on the guitar slipped out of the eye of the strap. I stood back up, there was enough friction to hold the body of the guitar up and the headstock went straight at my foot, hitting on the top of the arch and fracturing the bone. Lesson learned.

Thanks for sharing that info. I needed to see a couple of different styles of strap guards to make a satisfying decision about what to get. My guitar 🎸 slipped off the peg this week & freaked me out. Fortunately it resulted in a microscopic nick to the back of neck(not in a place near where my hand goes.) Definitely need to get some of these.

I've had the metal spring-loaded pins on the Schaller ones actually fracture in the metal and fail...I would never recommend them out of experience. The bottle washers are surprisingly excellent...and you get a beer or two! My favourite are the Dunlop ones...very neat.

Astonishing how some firms charge £25 or $ for Schaller locks when there are identical ones for £2-£5 - which possibly even come from the same factory. Mine were through EBay and cost £2.19 (plus a 2 week wait while they came from the far east).

I remove the screw and place a washer on the screw then put the strap underneath the washer then put the screw back into the guitar. I do that for each strap screw. It is a bit more difficult to remove the strap (if you need to put the guitar in a case or something) but it is very cheap!
@doobiz

I made a strap button that I would like to get patented some day. you can take the strap on and off pretty easily and use any strap without it being permanently attached to the guitar. The biggest problem is the way the straps are made the slits in the strap are too long on some straps. make sure you get a strap with the smallest slit you can find ,you can have a strap button as big as 1 inch diameter and some of the slits will pull over it.

Haha, I just wanted to post about the beer bottle thingy, but then I saw You cover that as well. I also use that locking types now (the cheap kind sold by 'Thomann'), what I don't like is that it rattles when You're sitting down with the strap still attached.

There is a system by Planet Waves that is similar to that dunlop system with one big difference: the locking system is directly mounted to the strap what makes it quite comfotable to use. another benefit is that you don't need to change any pins on your guitar. It's called "Planet Lock System".

I've used mine for a while now, and I'll say, the nylon is much softer and smoother than the other nylons i have.. I was very pleased with that. The straplocks are amazing! So easy! :o My only concern is that the ends of it (with the lock system) is scraping on the wood, but I guess they're made to NOT do so? If it doesnt ruin my guitars body wood, I'll be a fan of Planet Waves for many years to come :D

Fender also do a locking type strap lock as well that has their 'F' logo on it. Instead of pulling to release, you push in the button. I'm not so sure on the security of that as it's easier to knock the button in by accident. There are also some cheapo "schaller" type ones that work the same way, but don't fit onto guitars that have a real Schaller lock installed on them.

Good tip, thx for the video. I just thought of a simpler option that would save me the beer ;) (not that I wouldn't mind, hehe)... I'm just gonna unscrew the nut and before I screw it back into my bass, cut out a round piece of hard plastic from that hard type of packaging plastic with a hole in the middle for the nut... now this should work if I put it all together infront of the strap before I attach it to the bass... I hope ;)

I had Schallers and took them off because I didn't like all of the clattering metal-on-metal sounds when I moved. It vibrates right through the guitar and pickups and comes out through the amp. (You can hear what I'm talking about when Justin jiggles the Schaller to show how secure it is. I may try the plastic options, though.

Justin, you forgot the 'Planet Lock' system by Planet Waves. They go over the stock strap pins. You put them on the pin and there's a wheel that locks the opening so it can't pull itself over and off the pin unless you unlock it again. Also, taking screws in and out of the guitar weakens the wood - this is also a personal note of caution as you said you took the Schaller one out for this video.

I'm a little afraid to put locks on my acoustic. It's an Ovation with the rounded composite body. My other guitar is an old "lawsuit era" Japanese copy of a gibby 175D from the seventies. It only has a peg in the tail and I use a Martain leather strap around the headstock to attach my strap to. I played around with the Dunlop lock in GC but didn't care for it very much.

@EzyoMusic
@EzyoMusic 10 лет назад
The nylon cuts into my neck. I might try a gel shoulder pad from Planet Waves to fix that. I like the ease of removal. My guitar doesn't fit in it's case so well when the strap is on it. There's soft rubber on the parts that sit against the guitar. It protrudes just a little further than where the screws sit so nothing scrapes against the guitar. It does leave some residue sometimes, but you can wipe that off easily. Wish they made one with metal locks though. Not so sure about this plastic.
