I saw him live in Amsterdam in 75 or 76, and he was by far the most charismatic artist I have ever seen. His entire personality washed over the audience like a wave. To this day it is the greatest concert I have ever been to.
"Some artists use the music as a vehicle to do something bigger than just the music itself, although the music itself is immense in every way..." - Michael Palmisano Thank you.
You are right the wailers were outstanding individuals on their respective instruments. Big players and had discipline, spearheaded by the Legendary Bob. Ow I cry wish I could have met him.
I admire bob as a musician but his treatment of the original wailers was wrong. He cheated them seriously on royalties. Seperate the man from the musician.
@@lucillejones117 what u talking about? All the beats n lyrics was all Bob, he did it all, just like MJ all his beats he made on his own and what u talking about he cheated? I don't see Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, etc complaining?
This Is The Fist Time I’ve Ever Seen Someone Capture The Essence Of This Song : With A Systematic Breakdown. And A Juxtaposing Comparison. Your Analogy Is Spot On. From The Way Bob Skanked, To The Way Held His Hand Out, Then Adjusted The Mic. The Beat Indeed Tells A Story, So Compelling, That One’s Soul Felt Empowered. My Mother Was A Theoretical MusicTeacher, She Tried To Explain It To Me The Way, You Have, But @ That Time I Was Too Young To Comprehend. So It’s Great To See Someone, Who Gets It ( @ Least The Way She Tried To Explain It Back Then). Bob Was Ahead Of His Time, Like Micheal Jackson, & So Many Others. Growing Up In Jamaica, We Never Knew What We Had In Bob Until It Was Too Late. But My Respects For Breaking This Down You’re Unique, But So Familiar @ The Same Time. Blessings!!!!
Bob is a musical legend that the earth was blessed to have. Happy he didn't hide this talent from the world. Sad that he left so soon but the world wasn't ready for that level of greatness.
I’ve watched this concert hundreds of times. I still get goosebumps when I watch Bob’s performance. Absolutely on another level. You describing the video is the way I’ve done it lots of times with family and friends. Impossible not to stop and share in the magic that Bob is doing. This is Rasta!
There are very few songs and fewer artists that evoke such an emotional response in me than Bob Marley and War! This song takes me back to my youth and I'm flooded with memories of being overwhelmed by his message and the devout following that ensued. We had parties totally dedicated to the One 'N' Only Bob Marley and we knew all the words, singing and dancing through the night! What a special era that was!!!
you must be joking. If you call yourself a "reggae guitarist", then surely you need to be honest and call out the truth. He's not playing any of it the way it should be. That's the problem: Too many claiming to be "reggae" musicians, let stuff like this go in the name of pacivity. Reggae has a standard like any other music and deserves excellence as well.
Yes I'm a reggae guitarist of Jamaican heritage raised on reggae music don't even try and tell me anything about reggae and how it should be played.. you obviously haven't got a clue about it otherwise you would not have made such a ridiculous remark Michael's strumming pattern is excellent his lead is great..Ok Mr expert tell me what he's doing wrong break it down and tell me I'll wait
@@eyebrigade7010 I dont have a clue? Obviously, you don't know how I AM. Ever hear of The Congos, Burning Spear, Easy Star All Stars? Yeah, well I've toured with all of them and have recorded with a few others. Now, what's that you were saying????
You should do more Bob, he has a bunch of amazing songs like this, many in this show. Great job Michael of pretty much describing exactly how I feel about and see the Legend that is Marley! As Marley said: "there is copy to this (my) music, but you can't copy the feelin"
One of Bob Marley'slong time friend and photographer once said that "Bob was physically small in stature but mentally, spirituality, philosophically and ideologically he was a GIANT. He said when Bob enters a room his aura immediately fills the room. It was like an invisible ball of intense illumination. It is that light which pulls us all towards him today. Bob please tell your creator to bless this world again with your physical presence. Peace and love to all mankind.
With fine ear you could hear exactly what made Bob famous ... yes, the music, the message, BUT to “non English Natives “ Bob’s voice itself is an instrument that fits perfectly with his music. Growing up in a non English speaking country, Bob’s lyrics didn’t need translation, we just heard another instrument taking us in a dimension that touched all 6, 7, or even 9 senses ... thanks Michael, you are the first I’ve seen online doing such detailed explanation of the Bob Marley Experience: Marvelous Work !
Actually Crying like almost sobbing tears of actual joy while watching this ! first time on this channel and its an absolute jewl. this SONG is powerful - the lyrics and what they mean to me and what I stand for , what me and my FATHER stand for, he was the one to introduce me to Bob marley and other socially conscious reggae music to and ever since he passed, this music is how I feel like I stay connected to him. Ive never seen such an overview of This song and/or Bob Marley before and this was AMAZING! this was therapy for me
I fell in love with uncle Bob's music when I was just a kid around 10 years of age. I couldn't read or write music or know the music terminologies, but I knew then exactly what you're talking about now. How every instrument, if listened to individually, told a story, which enhanced the whole story and message. And when peiced together, actually created an image in the mind that accompanied the message or meaning of the lyrics, where the overall sound and feel of the song, suited the words and the meaning. And the icing on the cake was his perfect voice, sung from the heart with full intent and meaning. At the age of 10 I couldn't find any other musician that could do all that. Every song was equally and carefully constructed. He's the only artist I can truly say doesn't have a bad song that I cannot listen to. Even to this day there is probably only a handful of musicians that manages to do that. Most only have 1 or the other, not the full package.
Hi Michael. There are millions of us all over the world that feel just the same. His lyrics were so ahead of their time it's amazing. Could not be more relevant to literally TODAY ❤️
You've done it again Michael. This is another accurate analysis of all aspects of the music, lyrics, stage performance, aims and intentions of lead and backup singers and band, and the harmony and collective outcomes of the meeting of all of those inputs.
What I love about videos like this.....is that I remember a time when reggae music was often derided in the west as toy music, or gimmick music, played by people who had no real musical skill. Of course people like me knew better. Nowadays, many musicians now give the music the credit it deserves. Part of being a good musician is to learn, study, and appreciate other musical styles, it enriches your craft and ultimately makes you better at what you do.
So many people equate Marley and his music with weed. But he has a consistent message in his music....and it's as powerful as his music. One love. I've been in love with his music for probably 30 of my 45 years. Great episode!!
You're a star man! You couldn't have picked a better song to dissect at this pivotal moment. The lyrics are from a section of a speech Haile Selassie made on 4 Oct 1963 to the United Nations General Assembly. The 2 key points were on "disarmament" and "establishment of true equality among men". There is a long preamble but the penultimate paragraph before he launches into "Until the philopsophy...." is the following: "In the United States of America, the administration of President Kennedy is leading a vigorous attack to eradicate the remaining vestige of racial discrimination from this country. We know that this conflict will be won and that right will triumph. In this time of trial, these efforts should be encouraged and assisted, and we should lend our sympathy and support to the American Government today." 57 years later.... the KKK has taken over the White House. Marley also said "if you know your history, then you would know where you coming from".
rispeck my brother, the speech is the address to the United Nations on the 30th of June 1963, the words of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie the First of Ethiopia, unprecedented and unrepeatable. Bob music lives on, finally someone who understands this, you should try something like "Forever Loving Jah", "Rat Race", or "Zimbabwe" Rastafari One love
League of Nations not United Nations the League of Nations became United Nations once other nations were allowed to be accepted in mostly African nations which were not in the League of Nations
I have just discovered your blog and I’m throughly enjoying it. I’m Jamaican and I revere the music of Bob Marley and greatly appreciate your adoration for Reggae music. One Love❤
Ha! I posted the album version of this with lyrics 3 days ago. I'm just 2 minutes into your intro, and you nailed it. I was privileged to see him twice, once in Philly and a few years later in Seattle: Marley was a living prophet and he brought every soul into transcendent communion. We surely miss him this week. Thanks. Brilliant choice.
Awesome job of breaking it down . Reggae music is that healing medicine . Our gift to the world . The legacy of Bob will always be there as a refuge for this and future generations . Who else could take an important speech and put it to music .ONE LOVE.
Absolutely brilliant review! I was 17 when this song came out and all my friends and I devoured the Rastaman Vibration album, learning all the words off by hard. For almost a year, we listened almost exclusively to Bob! (It was also the height of the Anti-Apartheid movement).
live at the rainbow 1977 for me is the best performance that bob marley give! Listen to no woman no cry,is the best live that ever sing bob marley in all concerts!
Michael..... I am an aspiring acoustic guitar player (super novice) first off. I love Bob Marley, I have heard his music since I was crawling looking at his face on my dads record collection.... HE IS THE REASON WHY I TRY AND PLAY GUITAR. The WAY you broke this performance down made me smile bruh, you understand completely what bob is doing... I’ve watched this performance hundreds of times and always knew that bob’s band was savage! but the way you simply broke it down gives me hope that I can get to that level to where I can play like that. You earned a life time follow from me. Thank you bro😎😎
Thank you for this. Perfect. And Yes! Three! "that's Reagae!" "Swimmin in it!" absolutely... and missed by so many of those that try and cover/play this art form. It does not come naturally to those who grew up on the one. Praise to all those struggling for equality.
@@Guitargate my friends and I were working on this one right when Covid hit, the host of the jam sessions has a son who is hyper-asthmatic...so I don't know when I get to return to my fender twin and rock this out....it's killing me! I really enjoyed the music theory perspective behind this vid - very helpful. Thanks
@@0207s_FINEST "…until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned: That until there are no longer first-class and second class citizens of any nation; That until the color of a man's skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes; That until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race; That until that day, the dream of lasting peace and world citizenship and the rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained; And until the ignoble and unhappy regimes that hold our brothers in Angola, in Mozambique and in South Africa in subhuman bondage have been toppled and destroyed; Until bigotry and prejudice and malicious and inhuman self-interest have been replaced by understanding and tolerance and good-will; Until all Africans stand and speak as free beings, equal in the eyes of all men, as they are in the eyes of Heaven; Until that day, the African continent will not know peace. haille was a puppet dictator funded by the USA, pics of him and the bigot racist winston churchill, he was a tool of the same royal reptile insects that've been running us for eons...
@@ShaglusZ no...lol...just no...reptile???...u watching too much startrek mate.how does one elite let another be overrun by another??..then receiving no help from ur so called winston? .or the so called america that was funding him?.could they not fund and supply the means for war like they did in the middle eastern countries today?..no...he aint part of that.
i love the way the melody of the line "everywhere is war" resolves the tension from the repeated melody that directly precedes it. symbolically it tells us that these things can only result in war.
And in fact, watching this has inspired me to ditch what I was going to sing at this evening's online 'folk club' gathering in favour of a rough and ready version of 'War' on the Peruvian charango.
love! this is brilliant! love bob since i am a kid. you gave me a deeper view! thanks! the colour of a man`s skin is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes.
Love this video, Bob has a big influence in the music I play today and its because of the positive vibes and message in his songs. God bless you bro and I love the way you play awesome feel too..✌💪🙏
You can tell Bob was so high on life in his performances, just as you were throughout this whole video, simply enjoying the experience to its fullest. Thank you for putting this out here. Much love
Yeah man spot on.. As you say applies to Crazy Baldhead, what great dynamics there between bass, guitar riff, drums, keyboard shuffle.. They leave so much room for each other Together ... wow
among the enormous amount of incredible lyrics bob marley wrote war it's simply the transcription of a speech that haile selassie took in 1963. he only added war. R.N.M a true inspired person. he changed my life when i was young
As a teenager angry at the injustices in the world loved Marley. He was one of a kind. Sadly I'm in my late 40's and had forgot the anger that used to burn inside me. Thank you for relighting that flame. Bob Marley is and will always be a religious experience. If you are the religious type then it is like he is channelling the word of God to us all. We all know what is right and wrong, good and bad, it is up to us to choose the path.
You are indeed brilliant, for you to be able to recognize this song for its timeliness and explain with such enthusiasm and the philosophical approach in explaining its rhythm and lyrics. This is a real and appropriate eye opener for the blind!
Now i am not a religious man, but i've always seen Bob Marley as a Prophet in modern times, he was working at a higher level than most people do. And his music still carries his message today, as strongly as it ever has and for ever will. So yeah, i can see that preacher and his following analogy for sure, he had a big influence on me growing up, viewing the world around me. Thanks for the upload Michael :)
Great job Brother reminds me of my dad rehearsals when I was a young one. Bless Brotha Nesta my favorite guitarist his up stroke is Dopest the ole skee vibe u caught it Bob played as we say play from the down stroke kinda backward when taught guitar. When I started learning to writing and saw it lines up in studio on the boards I was trained as as a engineer it hit me when I seen it line up lyrically and musically. Almost passed out, my ear already trained from inside the womb from family of singers and musicians but to learn a proper way to arrange music. My dad brought albums during Army Tours Overseas in 70's so he exposed me to Bob Marley I was born in 78 so I now know why I love Him so much. Ur vibe reminds me of one of my Uncles Guitarist Buddy Cash
Earned a fan 4 Life. You killed No More Trouble. Hit all the right points made me jump up and Holla had me on the edge of my seat to see if the note streak would be on target. Man your sick asf no disrespect but as a singer, writer, fellow musican,& trained engineer you could play/work with and behind me Any Day. WORD IS BOND .TALENT UNDENIABLE. At -4.28 ya almost made me run into the streets of Philadelphia
Your Description and depiction of Bob Marley Quite LITERALLY brought tears to my eyes becuase hes so special to me - From how I was introduced to his music to his passion for the music, to his messaging !! so happy that you shared this!
Yah, I just subscribed right now. I do hear some of the magic of Marley but really I had just a peek before this. " I'm tellin'ya this is Genius stuff"! Ok now as a student, I'm hooked in. But I was already as you showed how well you translate along, using your guitar to get within this music. Also I like the way you took your own conventional 6 string electric that so many people have AND showed how you can do dedicated bass lines on it which even alone are very pleasing.
I feel like we're always on the same wavelength dude. I was literally just listening to the Playing for Change version of this the same day you posted this video. I was listening to Bob Marley all day thinking how relevant his message would be in light of current issues and how important it is to use the music as a healing force to incite positive change. I just discovered your channel from your Goose and Billy Strings videos super recently too. The synchronicities of the universe blow my mind sometimes. Thank you.
LOVE this. Would love to see some more of your reaction videos to black guitar players and musicians like Gary Clark Jr., Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, BB King, or any of the other incredibly influential artists over history
I wonder if america already had enough challenge accepting black music from " home" hip hop, rap, blues, jazz, which gives black americans all the quality they need & white citizens enough to be challenged by. I wonder if jamaican reggae seemed too closely tied to cannabis use & the language of " I and I" both odd & perplexing. Just guessing, not saying that I know. Reggae music is great though. Appreciate it or if you don't you have missed a major cultural force.
Emperor Haile Selassie gave the "War" speech on October 4, 1963, calling for world peace at the 1963 U.N. General Assembly in New York City. Bob then took and made it into this immortal piece of musical genius.
Wonderful breakdown of one Bob's most Powerful songs. A true pleasure to see someone appreciate this Prophetic message from perhaps the most important artist to ever live. Thank You!
Excellently broken down an out of this world and spiritual i won't say performance it was simply more than that i had the chance to meet bob in Wolverhampton uk as a child. But didn't gutted one love.
Thanks for being a good dude and addressing the times we live in. I'm a guitar teacher as well and do my best to keep stay on the topic of music. However, there's a lot of hurt out there and it's healthy to work it out with good tunes. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much for doing this Michael! Bob Marley changed my life in my teens, living in AL, surrounded by extreme racism! I can tell you feel the music/message, and would love to hear your thoughts on how it developed from Ska, to Rock Steady, to Reggae, and what that means musically!
