Being a drummer...just gotta say that another one of the absolutely amazing things about that guitar solo (like there isn't enough already)...is how monstrously rhythmic it is. The bass and drums are laying down this monumental foundation...and Nuno is riding it like lighting in a hurricane. Dancing all over the fret-board...creating such tasty tasty tasty runs and combinations and explosions of sound. And those arpeggios where he climbs out of it!!!! There are lots of new guitarists on the block who can shred like a demon...but makin it musical you gotta have wisdom...you gotta have experience...and you gotta have years. Nuno has it in spades! Usually I always say that Guthrie Govan is my top dude on the guitar-playin block...but Nuno does things that I've just never seen or heard before...and he does them like an effing bat-out-of-hell!
Respect what you're saying but alot of what is in that solo is stuff Nuno has played before over the years. Why it sounds new and fresh is because he's crafted a bunch of his licks from these various tracks and thrown them into this tasty mix. Not that this matters overall but for those who love figuring out his solos, he has other songs that help guide you towards working this one out. Obviously only talking to those who love to learn by ear.
I saw Extreme live on my 30th birthday. The thing that stood out is that Nuno didn’t look at the fretboard once. He played with his ears and hands like Jeff Healy or Stevie Wonder. At the same time he was running around like he was playing basketball. He didn’t miss a lick.
Actually the whole solo is a tribute to EVH according to Nuno, that's why he starts with the tremelo picking, then a dive bomb, ascending whammy bar double stop bends and finishes with "I'm the one" pinch harmonics
@@peejay6930 and of course you being Nuno's peer, you gallantly jump in to defend his and Ed's honor on YT So what if Ed is Nunos hero. Unlike the countless thousands of tone-deaf, poodle-haired wanker wannabes butchering "Eruption" in the music stores from the late 70s on, Nuno hasn't been content to be a gimmicky wanker who cuts and pastes his patented noodles together in each and every song and solo. He doesn't always sound the exact same over and over.
@@bobbyruggs808 a while back Rick Beato made a video about "What if ... played the Stairway solo" and had some guy imagine how Ed might have played it, and he thankfully laid off Eds tappy histrionics but theres no way Ed would have played a solo that long without tapping
This is a fantastic solo, and I'm glad to see him and the band getting some long overdue recognition because this isn't anything new for him. The song itself has a different vibe, but the solo is the type of work he's been doing for the past 30 plus years. Congrats to all of them.
Well said. I agree. Anyone familiar, and I'd say I'm too familiar haha, with his work and the bands work, alot of this stuff can be heard all throughout their art. But all said and done, this is a brilliant new single by them and I'm happy for them all.
Nuno's work on Decadence Dance was the steamroller that flattened my Dunning Krueger syndrome and made me realize that I had no idea how to play guitar.
I picked up guitar after hearing nunos solo from play with me in bill and teds excellent adventure in 1989. 34 years later so happy nuno has single handedly brought back excitement and hype to a guitar solo! Love the song and it actually gets better the more I hear it!
@@johncollins5552 far as I know that guitar is on 99% of all his recordings. It’s been his number one guitar since their 1990 release of Pornograffitti
The mix is simply amazing. I haven’t heard anyone say anything about that. Listen to the vocals how they don’t compete with the guitar, but the guitar hasn’t been EQ’d to where It takes away its balls! Hats off to whoever mixed this record, and of course, Nuno is in beast mode, as he always is! Tim Henson, I hope you brought your lunchbox because Nuno is taking you to school.
That's funny......... most of the criticisms of this song IS the mix.. lol. No one is disputing the playing though, but the studio could've definitely mixed it down better.
@@1c1su0ilbiaWhen you resort to randomizers triggering sequencers to generate something stimulating to the ear, you’ve strayed too far into the land of flash but zero meaning. NB did an interesting harmonic progression at the end that is reminiscent of Dream Theater and nodded to EVH while staying original in one solo. Different don’t mean much to me but we will see if in 30 plus years TH drops a new record and gets this kind of attention. What a mic drop.
@@onethousandtwonortheast8848 Listen carefully to the drums. Can you hear the high hats at all? Because I can't LOL. The song starts with great and tight guitar tone, but once the drums and bass kick in everything starts falling into quite a muffled, muddy mess. I think the best way to notice would be to play the track side by side to a reference track. Maybe Extreme intended for it to sound that way? I mean... it DOES make the vocals and guitar stand out a lot more, but... I think it still objectively sounds sub-par. Still a great song though.
I am a guitarist and a couple years older than Nuno, we use to cross paths on the local New England club scene in the 80s. I knew he and the band were going to make it before they put an album out.
Check out pornograffiti and III sides full albums are fantastic. Everyone is perfect. The bass tone and playing, the overdrive guitars, vox, drums. It's all perfect.
I really enjoy watching you break songs down, chop it up bit by bit, and figure out what's going on. This track does not disappoint. Nuno is a legend, yet somehow still underrated. Great video as always... Thank you Michael!
Another disagreement over the term underrated. I would agree that Nuno is very underrated to the general masses but not to the guitar/musician community. He commands much respect there.
@@inspectorbudget The idiot masses only cared about more than words, that's fine. They are probably buying Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift albums these days🤣💰
When I was in Junior High, everybody slow-danced to “More than Words”. “III Sides to every Story” came out when I was in High School. Been a fan of Nuno’s since then. Go listen to the guitar work on “Peacemaker Die” and the solo on “Rest in Peace”. Good stuff.
A guitar solo that makes every guitar player wanna have some guitar lesson again.. PS : "Midnight Express" by Extreme might have some key elements of this solo
Mike!!!!! Your first listen and first attempt as you are listening, isn’t half bad! That’s a wicked solo by Nuno, and you are right there right along getting close on first attempts! Dude, I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS, love what you do! Keep it up! May you have a blessed day my friend!
There are many risks in life. One is having a guitar strapped on and saying "ok, let's see what's going on in this new Nuno solo from Rise....oh, and I'm going into this ice cold" You took the risk....good job!
tx for the dissect. love it saw extreme back in '95, Newport. amazing performance .... and nuno, what can i say. just AMAZING. still the funkiest, and haha prettiest guitarist alive :)
I appreciate you being legit Michael... Lots of times guitarists on youtube will listen to things a few times and then "figure it out" on camera. I feel like this is legit watching a musician(Michael) figuring it out. bravo
what always strikes me about Nuno is the cleanliness of all the notes. Lot's of people play fast but no one articulates each note to the degree that this man does. its likehe's playing a keyboard the notes are so seperate.
I wish he had gotten his due when they were in their prime. Nuno has been playing like this and dominating for decades! People need to listen to the 3 sides to every story album. I like that this song took inspiration from Purple era Stone Temple Pilots. Cool as hell!
Nuno is an absolute machine on guitar...precise, highly technical, few if anyone can play as fast and as clean as Nuno can. Unbelievably talented rhythm/lead guitarist. What amazes me is Extreme still has that same gritty, edge-rock sound (and vocals) that they had over 20 years ago when Pornograffiti hit the shelves. I heard Rise pop on the radio for the first time a few months back, not knowing Extreme had released a new album...knew within seconds of hearing the song that it was Extreme, with Nuno ripping new riffs on a new album. Huge props to Extreme for cranking this one out and still sounding as good now as they did in the Pornograffiti days. The guitar solos in "Get the Funk Out" and the "Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee" in "He-man Woman Hater" are legendary Nuno solos. 3 sides was also an amazing album...anyone with an appreciation for rock and highly skilled guitar work will love that album.
I'm an Extreme fan and this song is incredible. Not only does it pay tribute to EVH, but is also VERY reminiscent of STP's Silvergun Superman (maybe that's just a coincidence)
"play like a drummer" you nail the definition! Thats is why I like this kind of playing: rhythm over everything else even over that monstruosity technique Nuno shows. Rock is not dead😁..!!!
Awesome break down, mate. I'm not even close to being as gifted as you, but it's awesome to see you attempt to figure out the chord structure, etc. It still amazes me that musicians know exactly what a single note is (A, B, C, C#, etc, etc). Total BEATO. Anyway, love the channel/insight. Loved that you covered Ian Thornley too -- one of the best guitarists/vocalists around.
Keep the guitar out of the case and on the couch! So true, best advice!!! I keep mine on the chair in the kitchen and I keep revisiting it all day just to noodle on stuff for a couple minutes each time throughout the day. Has helped so much. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that my wife lets me keep the Marshall half stack in the kitchen. 😝
I AM so happy you said what you said. That rhythm is really more important than the notes (or at least as important). Second of all... The swing thing. Eddy was swinging as hell and Nuno does it too. This was a great reaction Michael. Fantastic knowledge ❤Huge respect 2 U. Good luck on everything you do 🙏
Nuno has a swiss precision metronome in his right hand. Adding the highly expressive phrased of his play make him very impressive. A truly guitar genius who i got bond with on my first listening of it's a monster !
I watched Beato's reaction as well, the best thing about these ? Watching your faces as you listen to Bettoncourt's shreds. I think most viewers also have the "Smile of disbelief" on our faces.
Just subscribed. Great reaction/analysis. Loved it. Every time I describe Nuno to someone who doesn’t know who he is I start with “percussive.” And as much of a student/influence of Eddie as he is I see the same in Eddie as well and I love it.
Nuno is probably the best rock player alive today,, his technique, tone, arrangement and timing is simply incredible. Not to mention his creativity,, WOW,, and such a super nice guy!! Glad to be alive the same time as this guitar monster!,,
Awesome, and yes - a perfect embracing of / tribute to EVH's influence - as well as a vibe-centric gauntlet thrown down to all the new 'kids' coming up. Playing with feel always wins. 🤟
Mixing up open strings plus hammer ons (ghost) notes on adjacent strings is throwing so many minds off. That's what we need more of. God bless rockers.
Just love the way you break things down! This is such a great new song coming from a band that rocked my twenties and fits right in with my favorite type of rock, percussive guitar playing is so awesome, Nuno showed us that he could do different styles years ago, just take for example one of their first hits 'More Than Words' and then listen to 'Rest In Peace'!!! Gary is also still tightly wound with Nuno, granted he messed things up when he went over to VH for a bit, not that the songs they created were rotten, but just not Extreme! Yeah, a little pun there haha! This is them man, just love it...and it's aggressive yet smooth when they hit some jazzy spots, melodic and great to listen to just on its own and if you're at all into video racing games this song could be an extreme (more pun haha) track song. Adrenalizing! Love it!
The guitar teacher is a genius. i wished he could have done more of a 1st run thru but he couldn't help be get caught up in what he was hearing, and wanting to demystify it for himself. He's giddy/ and blown over/ and so are we. The teacher demystifying Nuno in real time is remarkable.
This is my third time hearing it. First time around I heard that muted section of the solo and thought that's killer! The second time I heard it, It reminded me of something I couldn't put my finger on. Now I realize it's "Satch Boogie" it's making me think of. Lol. It's been 100 years since I heard it, so I'm probably all wrong, but it puts me in mind of it. I need to listen to it again and figure it out.
I’ve loved Extreme, especially Nuno, since 1990. I’m so glad they are back and my God, Nuno is as good as ever. Gary’s stint with VH is underrated. I love that Nuno reveres EVH the way he does. Going as far as always calling him Edward. Respect.
The cool thing about this solo. The day he was recording that solo at his house. Gary showed up with EVH at his house. He wanted to hear what the album sounded like. The day he was recording that solo! Thats so cool!!
I've just binged about 4 or 5 of these Rise play through reviews and this is by far the best! Brilliant! Nuno is just killer, I was inspired by him as a teen and then equally squashed when I realised I'd never play like that so became an indy player :/
Just watched Rick Beato's 2 hr interview with Nuno. The last 20 minutes of the video was Nuno riffing on some of Rick's guitars. He does this live, with another man's guitar, with nothing but a guitar, cord, and amp. It's all muted alternate picking. I was blown away.
