Joe i my favorite solo guitarist of ALL time. The melodies and the hooks are the best I've heard. I can tell it's Satriani playing instantly, and his playing never fails to put me in a good mood. Love, Love, Love that guy.

One of my absolute favourite drummers. I've stolen so many of his tricks from his Satch days. I blatantly stole his 14:27 fill and put it right into one of the songs on our latest album.
The 1st time I heard this song, when I was around 14, I wanted to learn this song note for note. I also said I want to play guitar for the rest of my life because of this song. I got to meet him in ATL and win one of his signature pedals. He signed it and got to get a pic with him. I owe everything that learning the guitar has given me. To this day I remember that, when I was 5, I always wanted my Dad to put on Surfing with the Alien on full volume, so I could put my sunglasses on and rock out to it in the living room. I am a fan ever since.
Not to diminish, in any way, Michael’s ability to analyze and/or break down the song but the value that he brings to this type of video is that he is also very entertaining as well as humorous, at times. In most cases it would drive me crazy how frequently he stops the video to share what we both just saw but I’m more receptive to his choice to start and stop so often because of his desire to immediately share what “he” just saw as well as break it down in only the way he can. I really enjoy his work and also his constant insistence that the listener focus on melody. There isn’t a more melodic Rock guitarist on the planet than ole Satch Boogie!!!

I'm not a guitarist, but played drums for about 20 years, so the constant stoppage kind of makes me crazy, but I understand why he does it, so I grit my teeth and ride his coattail. Mike is very personable and entertaining, so it's not maddening as much as off-putting. I like how he breaks things down as he himself tries to figure out what's going on. Austin Burcham does this with drumming as well. It's quite educational. Mike's so cool I'm subscribed just because of his personality. LoL

I think this version got Joe nominated for one of his 16 Grammy nominations, with no wins. He is the reason why I picked up the guitar 25 years ago, and he continues to inspire me to play!
Joe is one of my all time fav guitarists and I know about him all thanks to my dad. My dad introduced me to his music before he passed from cancer 7 years ago. My dad had played guitar for 55 years and I didn't start until I found out he was sick. On my 30th birthday I went out and bought my first guitar and didn't look back. I am 37 years old now and still play. This piece is one of the ones that I am working on. I am also fortunate to be in a position where I have been able to buy my fav guitarists guitar (a JS2450 MCP) and am looking forward to it. Thanks for all you do Michael, I appreciate you and the community you have built.
I've been playing guitar for 30 yrs and agree that out of all the great modern virtuosos, Satriani is the best. Unlike many others in his genre who play a lot of finger tapping and technical speed playing which looks impressive but lacks the quality and substance of Satrianis compositions. I saw Satriani in concert in 2000 and stood about 20 feet from him while he played this amazing song. It was like he was playing to the heavens. The only other band I've seen in concert who had the sound quality of Satch was Rush. I dont know if you've ever heard "Song of the Golden Dragon"l by Estas Tonne but you should check it out. One of the most amazing pieces of guitar work I've ever heard.
This and For The Love of God have the most beautiful backing track. I will just play these two on my guitar for hours, without even touching the lead and still be satisfied.
Thanks Mom... For having me born when I was and thus being able to experience Joe and his incredible mastery of his music for over the last 35 plus years. I will never forget the amazing live concerts I've seen him at through the decades, I truly feel he has changed me towards the better. I can't thank you enough.
Listening to Satch play is like listening to my fathers old stories. Like listening to a conversation. I can put headphones on, play the Extremist album and get lost for awhile. Awesome!

I have watched that performance a dozen or more times... being a huge Satriani fan and a modest beginner to intermediate guitarist, I know I love that performance but its hard to explain why... it just hits me hard in the feels... hearing you break it down makes the track even more special because it gives me a baseline understanding of what's happening theory wise and gives me more appreciation to the brilliance that is Joe Satriani... Well done Mr Palmisano.

I feel like Joe has a way of keeping his soul in his playing. He has all the technical proficiency possible, but he never steps into emotionless recitation. In both his writing and his playing, he always expresses himself. It’s beautiful to watch.

This has always been one of my absolute favorite Satch songs. I even managed to convince my wife to let me put it on our pre-ceremony tracklist during our wedding. Great video, as always, Michael!
I've been listening to Satriani since he had hair. To me this was his best composition ever. But the original studio version was masterpiece from the tapping to the next verse. And I know the live versions display his real talent, in this case he delivered the gold at the studio

I used to play this song repeated when I put new strings on my guitar as it is a perfect song to break them in because of all the bends and whammy bar tricks that are in it. It does actually modulate to B minor after the tapping phrase, then re-modulates back to B major for the final pass of the main melody. Then instead of ending it where it does on the record, he then jams on the Joe Cocker version of "With A Little Help From My Friends". So technically it's a whole different song.
Satch is the man. I've always hated live recordings because some idiot will always want to get his (or her) 'noise' on them somewhere. But, Joe comes alive with an audience, some of his earlier stuff was very clinical, I was impressed - who wouldn't be - but not loving it. It was the live side of 'Time Machine' that hit me in the gut and I became hooked. What a player.
I wish I was 5-10 years older. His rep in the east bay I would have done anything to take lessons with him like Kirk Hammett, Larry LaLonde, Alex Skolnick, Charlie Hunter, and Steve Vai. Seemed every student he had went on to form a band that made it.

Now I keep playing this Song for 20+ Years now, and I alway end up practicing to different Tempos. It`s almost like playing two different Songs comparing the Album & the live Tempo. Thank you for a Great Video on one of the greatest Guitar-Pieces ever written.
great stuff. I went to a satch concert in NYC in the early 2000's. Craziest show, they had speakers from stage floor to ceiling about 30 ft high and i swear they were outputting ONLY guitar haha. He was SO loud i could barely hear the drums!

In short, when he added an A Maj, your pattern can be changed to E Maj7(Eb and B are still prioritized in the pattern). For the beginners, try the E Maj scale on it and you'll find it amazing.
Just seeing this video now, a few years late. The best part of watching Michael analyze this song is watching his facial expressions while satrianis video is playing.
Satriani has always been my favorite shredder type guitarist. He builds beautiful melodies and then shreds around them, but does not overplay or shred just to show off, it always has purpose, and phrasing is great. Eric Johnson also plays this way, but I prefer Satriani.
Joe is my favorite musician. I own all of his albums and I buy them as soon as they come out. Don't need to hear it first because I know it's going to be great. It's almost freakish the guy just seems to be getting better. He is one player that his music is so melodic it appeals to normal people. Bass player in the video is Dave Larue of Steve Morse band , Dixie Dregs, Flying Colors ( an incredible band) . He is a beast too.
The reason I picked up a guitar thirty years ago was two-fold: 1) I heard Metallica on the radio in 1991, and when I learned about Cliff Burton and watched Cliff em All, I had to have a bass guitar. Did that for about a year and taught myself to play by literally imitating everything Cliff Did. 2) About a year or so later I was at a Battle of the Bands and every band was so HEAVY. Then this group of guys with short hair came out - the lead guitar looked like he just came from a Beach Boys photo shoot lol Their band name was Ice-9. We laughed at them. They did NOT fit in with the other groups at all. Then they started playing and that Beach Boys dude just ripped. They played “Summer Song” and I was smitten. I found out that their guitar player - Ken McMahon - was a tech for a local music shop, and a graduate of Berkeley. He actually helped me build my first rig and sold me my first jewel blue Ibanez RG-470 in 1994. I still play Ibanez to this day. As much as I have always loved hard rock and am a huge Metallica fan to this day, Cliff Burton and Satch are my biggest musical inspirations. And you’re right, he just gets better with time.
@@Pick4217 Music is subjective, I think it's fabulous. Probably my favorite albums is Shockwave Supernova (2015). But Unstoppable Momentum (2013) and Blackholes and Wormhole wizards (2010 okay 12 years old isn't exactly new) are also great. Those, to my ears lean more to the Proggy side where his newest most recent stuff is more rock. But it's still awesome. Just check them out on YT. Good music for hi-fi>

I've worn out 2 cassette tapes of it now going down the road just trying to figure out little licks and stuff and I swear I hear something new every single time I listen to it and this was no exception. Thank you for the lessons you share (even if there are a few misinterpreted notes) I'll definitely have to check out your website. I've been playing for 20 years come July and have never been that great at reading sheet music or tablature (always listened to a song and figured it out) but watching you has helped me to learn certain chord names which is helping.

Had a Marine Gunny music instructor tell me "I don't care what you do, as long as it makes sense, but always muster at the dominant". I was an Army guy, translation. Muster is a formation, a formation is a gathering. As long as what you are playing makes sense you can do whatever you want, but when it comes time for the chord progression to make sense you had better be there as a soloist with the rest of the band.
I learned the studio version of this son probably about 10 years ago, and I had never put much though into the theory of this song, or why this version is so great. Thanks for giving me so much to think about man. I hope someday I’ll get to see you analyze Cliffs of Dover Live in Austin

Dannnng! One of many favorite sounding parts of this tune is the tap thing. That part just gets me! Enjoy seeing you explain these things. Have been exposed to basics and can relate to these things now even though I am close to retirement! Still get stoked!
I wonder if it's a challenge for guitarists who have played for years to play with such restraint such as this song requires. I played drums for years and found it difficult to play fast, then to resort back to restraint when required. Playing fast can be much easier than playing slower, softer and with control at times. While this song, which is my fave JS song, seems easy, it also seems like it could be difficult in having to hold back from the tendencies of playing more upbeat.

Your ability to hear intervals is something you take for granted but so hard for others. I’ve been playing decades and can’t hear what you hear. I guess I just wanted to make you aware that I think few share your gift.
Its not a "gift" its the result of a lot of hard work. Recognising note functions is a learnable skill, check out Bruce Arnolds and/or Rick Beato's ear training material.
Sammy Hagar said with ED there were bad notes all the time that had to be worked thru. WIth Joe there are never any bad notes. Joe knows music theory like no other guitarist
It's not the imitators it's about the originators (you can copy but can come up with this stuff on your own) there's plenty of guys who know the techniques but it's what you do with it that makes you stand out
