SRV hands down goat....He played strings so thick it make most players fingers bleed if they could even bend a chord..A true legend gone way to soon, his best was still yet to come
One of the things I have found playing heavy strings is you don't need to pick very hard to get very clear notes. Pair that a with tremble bleed mod and the highs don't get muddy down sounding at lower volumes that they would without the mod.
SRV was my first love. I think everyone thinks of him as an absolute burner and aggressive but, to me, he is an absolute MASTER of dynamics. He sets up every blazing run through incredible control and the magical push and pull of dynamics.
Totally agree! My dad introduced to him when I was very young and grew up listening to him, I'm 26 now and still listens to him regularly! He has a way with the guitar that translates emotions to music in a way I have not yet experienced anyone else do
On my way to some college class when i heard on the radio he died. Sat down and cried! To this day, still not sure if i was crying for him after his hard work getting his life in order or all the music the world was gonna miss out on. 😢
That guitar starts out as an inanimate object but as soon as Stevie picks it up and starts playing it becomes a living breathing entity. A supernatural Talent.🎸
I’m 56 years old and in all my years I have never, ever seen anybody who “gets it” like you do; I’ve just subscribed and I’m going to purchase every course & lesson you offer. Your reaction to the playing here is *everything*. Thank you so much.
Every time I listen to this, I smile when Johnny Copeland comes in. Man, what a voice! Such a stark juxtaposition with how SRV sings. This whole performance is one of the greatest of all time, in my opinion.
I have to agree this performance is the best live performance I ever seen I got the DVD from my brother and he'll never get it back from me I watch it all the time it's gospel to me.
Stevie is the GOAT man. Nobody else has ever made a guitar look and feel to those watching and listening like it is physically a part of him. Spiritual.
@@blainetrahan8883 BB’s guitar looked like it was his newborn baby, Jimi’s guitar looked like it was his woman, but Stevie’s looked like it was another limb
Seen him 7 times in concert, and I can say that there is no one who becomes one with his guitar better the SRV. Just watch his body language and facial expressions and you can tell the guitar has become part of him. He brings me to tears Everytime I hear him and remember all the concerts.God truely blessed this man with unbridled talent
I grew up with Stevie Ray Vaughan and he was to me back then and of course still is the goat...he is like an open channel every single time you watch him play...but this performance with Copeland is so full of absolute joy of playing...Stevie has such respect to his friend up there and never interfere or trying to force Copeland in any direction but just let the tones go where they want...oh it’s such a great moment in time there and it’s just pure musical perfection... Whenever I watch Stevie nowadays on YT or on a dvd or such...it always brings out tears from my eyes...he was such a beautiful soul and an out of this world musician...taken away from us way way to soon...thank you Stevie...thanks for showing us your soul through your music...
I do believe this quite possibly may be one of the, if not, THE greatest performances in music history. Every single thing about it could not be ANY better.
This is the music you live for, It cuts right into your soul and demands your love which you are happy to give. The world of music lost out when SRV died but he left part of his soul behind in the music we love him for and we were lucky to have him for the time we did. This is a gift of music that just keeps on giving and you never get tired of it.The way he played is as close to real magic as your gonna get and you can nearly see his soul. The power of it is hard to describe this music like the cold gives me Goosebumps.
SRV is the only one that makes my hair stand on end, when I listen to him play, it’s a going to church, feeling the Holy Spirit moment. I have every album in his catalog and know it by heart, have been a die hard fans for ever, never get tired of listening to Stevie. RIP Mr Vaughn.
Michael, you are spot on. The more a person occupies that space of “the moment”, the more you become aware of the stark contrast of not being in that kind of atmosphere. It breathes different. Time moves different. You become instantly addicted. The rest of your days are spent seeking every nook and cranny of that space you can find. I appreciate you Michael, thank you for your teaching and insight.
Before I even watch this, this is my favorite video of SRV and I even got drunk with Shameka Copeland while we talked about how great her dad was, centered around this performance. Thanks for this one!!!
I like how theres nothing he's hiding behind... you hear his strings and even the little buzzes and it all seems to fit into the melody he's setting......
What always gets me about this song is SRV's vocals. The growl, the softness, the drawn out descent of the last word in the lyrics, etc. It is indeed a masterclass of blues. Multiple guitar techniques, not to show off his ability, but to add the feel the song is meant to convey. Same with his vocals, multiple techniques, the growl, the whisper, the descending drawl, not as a display of his vocal prowess, but to serve the song. I often play along with this song, love it.
I so love when serious and knowledgeable guitar players like yourself break down any performance by Stevie but this particular one is so special and you captured the essence of it so beautifully. Stevie couldn't play without losing himself in sweet surrender and being swept away in musical bliss. In turn he swept all of us away with him. It is why he is so captivating and mesmerizing to watch💙. Thank you Michael for this gem💙🎸🎶‼️
It's been 15 years for me now with Stevie. Been hooked from day 1. So glad people are still out there finding him and listening. There are many greats. For me he is the greatest. He has held something special for me all these years. When him and I jam out, I leave this earth.
Masterclass. The dynamics! This is what the Stevie clones miss. Also... 'living for the whiskey, wine and gin'. You know that was the place he was in at the time. Deep!
If I'm not mistaken this is after he got sober. I think charley gave him the charley guitar as a gift for getting sober. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure
@@jakeritchie3805 actually Jake this was in 1982 so quite some time to go before sobriety. The white guitar was from Charley's guitar shop and he customized it in collaboration with Stevie. Stevie usually plays "Charley" when he performs "Life Without You" written by Stevie in honor of Charley after his sudden passing.✌️💙
It was a strat replica made for him by a guy in Dallas with Danelectro pickups and a hardtail. I believe the decal was just added as Fender didn't make it - but there are some custom shop replicas and I think John Mayer has one.
I've watched the Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985 DVD so many times I've lost count. Religiously when I was teenager, it completely capsulized me and threw me in a haze of goosebumps, tears, and amazement. I was new to learning the six string and it brought on a wave of inspiration like no other, it's one of core reasons why I really stuck to playing and practicing. Witnessing this was honestly like a spiritual moment if that makes any sense. I don't know, I regard it as some type of monolith in my life. Next to hearing/watching Jimi Hendrix and Tyler Childers for the first time, and receiving spare computer parts as a kid from my Drum teacher to build with. Blew me away unlike any concert I witnessed or watched. The whole band is tight, in the pocket, bringing Johnny in at the perfect moments, and all the colors they are able to create is just incredible, truly incredible. Stevie's entire presence, chops, confidence, aura, and how it changes is fascinating too. The drugs and whiskey had a part, I'm aware, but it's more than that. Like the music started communicating with me on an emotional and subconscious level, almost hypnotizing, as strange as that sounds. It's hard to describe I guess. Anyways, this particular song of the concert always blows me away. It was unreal to hear you say, react, and notice everything I did and have the same excitement/passion from it - as no one else I've shown and watched it with felt this way or was moved by it like I was. Happy to know I'm not alone haha. Keep up the great work Mr. Palmisano, and thank you for being my guitar Teacher. EDIT: Just finished the whole video and I can definitely say I that I felt it and will do everything I can to keep that feeling alive.
I'm not a guitar player, but I did see SRV live & you nailed it! He emoted through his guitar, went to another place & invited you to join him on the journey. I've seen alot of bands & great guitarists, but no one had the stage presence of Stevie, nor have I seen a crowd / audience so captivated & locked in to the place Stevie was taking us to. It's very difficult to describe. Thank you for this!
This is one of my favorites I’m physically and mentally exhausted when the song is over. When Johnny sings it just adds another layer of texture. When I get frustrated trying to learn scales and play jazz I go back to this and feel the pure energy, power and heart that can be conveyed in I IV V with minor pentatonic. Never forget why we play not to show off, not to impress with our scale and chord knowledge but for that moment when we are tuned in to our soul and it just comes out and everyone can feel it.
Thanks for this, Michael ! I do believe that in fact Johnny forgot the lyrics when he went in front of the mic and that is why he launched into a solo. Stevie realised and that is why that he said “Ha!” . In the end of the original video Johnny tells something to stevie and i believe its something along the lines of “I forgot the lyrics there” and then both of them start laughing. Truly an amazing performance.
Here I am watching this yet again. Stevie's respect for Johnny and Johnny's brilliance is such a wonderful thing to watch. This stuff should be played in schools to kids. This is how we do it. This is how we make the world better. If you have influence, take it and run....
I know beyond zero about how to play a guitar. But I don’t have to know anything about playing to know that SRV was a master of his craft. I recognized his genius from the first time I listened to him. But I so appreciate hearing someone like yourself who does know about guitar explain why and how he was so good!! It makes me appreciate Stevie’s greatness all the more. I gave you a 👍🏻 and subscribed.
Playing a slow blues is the hardest thing to do and you nailed the genius of SRV with this . I've been blessed on a few occasions to become "weightless" and it is pure bliss. One night I was performing an improv piece on my acoustic 12 string and when I was done it felt like I just landed. Could not recall all that I did but the standing O I received told me it must have been ok, along with the feeling of the most incredible mental musical high. A friend said they could see that I became one with the guitar. It is a spectacular feeling
When he starts the tremolo picking it’s lights out. The back and forth motion, at that speed, for that amount of time, with the varied dynamics is Mind blowing. Very idiosyncratic imaginative, energetic and physically/technically awesome. My favorite SRV moment for sure.
Michael, I agree with you 100%. SRV was the reason I played from the first time I saw him in 1984 at 13 years old on PBS showing of Austin City Limits. My dad bought my my first Strat in 87, and I’ve been playing ever since. To this day I have also been trying to reach the Zen that was SRV, occasionally on stage I feel it. Thank you so much for this honest and genuine expression of your kindred affection for Stevie and the blues.
“It’s warm it’s everywhere it’s electric. His mouth is open his body is shaking, this has been the goal of my life this is church for me” Ditto. -Subscribed
Amazing video, I've been trying to convey to my family for years what guitar expression and passion looks like and you nail it here. When you can just feel the music in your bones and its like your body starts to act all by itself and the notes just come from the ether.
I mean, are you kidding? This is just mastery at its best. I never forget where I was when I heard he passed away rest in peace Stevie Ray Vaughan. Thank you for everything you’ve given us.
Awesome video thank you I don’t play guitar but I love Stevie Ray Vaughan I listen to his music he puts me in a trans I have never heard anybody who plays like him I’m still waiting
Rest Peacefully Stevie Ray!! The Greatest Ever For My Money!!! And Yes Sir, There Is Not A Greater Feeling Than Being Up There And Nailing It!! Like You Said, Not A Bad Note Can Be Played, And Everyone Right On!! No Higher High Than That!!
I know I'm a year late seeing your reaction. But you are so spot on. All I can say is stevie and johnny take me to the alley. I get lost, captivated and mesmerized. There are so many amazing nuances that you don't see individually but yet it comes together in such a way that, again, you are transported to another world in that alley. I have watched this video so many times and still do. There is no greater talent than SRV in my book
You have perfectly crystallized why SRV has been by favorite player for 30+ plus. Player and instrument as one. His ability to emote through the guitar had seen no parallel. There is a mystical, psychic, spiritual connection made with the listener as if by magic. I wept the day he died, I knew the world would be that much less. Thank you for paying such a thoughtful homage to one of my most beloved heroes.
SRV is the reason I watch video's like this and have become addicted to music over the years. I do play guitar, but realized years ago that attempts to mimic him are futile. Sure, I could learn the phrases and triads and all that, but SRV possesses something that can't be taught or replicated. The way he attacks the guitar from all angles, while being as dynamic and articulate as humanly possible, he is truly a once in a millenia player. When I first discovered him (early 2000's) i went around showing all of my friends and none of them got it. The best way I've ever been able to describe SRV is that if you watch his face, his body language while he is playing, you could be deaf and still hear it. The emotion/energy/rage/heartbreak/happiness/sadness that SRV can put into the guitar will forever be a thing of wonder. My favorite life performance of his is the Live at the El Mocambo version of Texas Flood. There is a note that he hits combined with his facial expressions at like 1:53 that gives me goosebumps EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Plus, I've always been partial to "Number One"
and when the blues really works is when its like you're being told a story of something that had only just happened, like they're re-living this story, and your on the edge of your seat waiting to hear how its going to end. Thats what Stevie was best at, expressing that story with every beat of his heart.
RIP Stevie Ray. Damn bro, he just channeled it ALL. At a time now when music seems mostly devoid of emotion, SRV reminds us what it's all about. I really miss him.
My mother was a lifelong musician. One of those backwoods Mississippi people that played music. She always spoke to me about the FEEL of, and inside of music. This video displays that and srv is the reason I picked up a guitar. I wanted to express the feelings I had through music. Thank you for showcasing this. I sincerely appreciate it.
Man I love this video. It really shows the greatness of the man. As if his playing weren’t enough, he Showed such utmost respect for Johnny Copeland, and any of the players that came before him. Period. I remember reading a story once of how a promoter changed the billing on a show so that Stevie was headlining, and BB was opening for him. Stevie refused to play if BB didn’t go on last. Stevie was quoted Saying BB King doesn’t open for anybody. What a man he did so much for the blues. Got to love him and miss Him.
I agree that SRV was the GOAT. I love how the community of fans knows so much about him. Most people who are a fan of his seem so educated about his music. I don’t think people really do their research anymore with artists they listen do. For some people the music is a lifestyle on its own.
first of all, thanks to be part of vour channel. I never played a instrument, but i always wanted to. but my hearing and my finger never did the same as i expected, but mayby the listener, it was i have no words for it. But, me and my partner had a Kneipe, it means a pub and restaurant at Cologne, because we are Gay, everyone was expecting "gaymusic or old german -schlager" indeed, we did this the first years, but after we build us our own standard, because of we had open longer as other pubs, and guests could wish songs, we did a change from Gay-Pub to a must to be in Music-Club, and often there were nights, talking about best guitar-music and i played them all, Rory Gallagher, Pink Floyd, john-butler trio (Ocean), alvin lee and george harrison and albert king, and don`t blame me for much more, i have forgotten to name, but and this is the sense of my writing, i know by watching and hearing the video, this was a special one, and as i had first listen to it, i knew it. Sorry for my broken english, not marianne, just Charly
I still remember my best gig from over 10 years ago: The crowd was feeling every song, a line 150' long out of the clubs doors , 55 songs, blew out my vocal chords and the manager kissing me as she says, "You make me money!" Like Mike said, it's the reason for playing.
I keep coming back to this reaction, over and over again, You just nailed this Michael, I get so much more from this than any other reaction I have seen anywhere. This is perfection. Thankyou.
Man, I love the emotions you show when you break these videos down. Shows me how much emotion is involved when you love what you do. Special moment for me. Thank you.
This song came on my pandora for some odd reason when i was 12 on my way home from school on the bus. It changed my life forever i forgot rap music and electronic music this song is the single reason i play guitar and have a music taste that far too few 23 year olds understand
Videos like these are why I love to watch Mike! The feels are so relate able and spot on! SRV is too often forgotten god in my opinion. Loved every second of this!
I was born in 1990. The year he left us. I was shown his music at a very early age. I was captivated and absolutely in love with the music. SRV has been a staple in my life ever since. Not only is he my all time favorite musician , but he has always been my hero. I appreciate this video Michael as I do all of yours. Thank you for doin what you do in keeping all of this great music alive and relevant.
the sex comparison at 19:30…MP - you are a prophet😌 and the food comparison at 28:30 - MP - you are speaking my language - thanks for getting my Saturday off to an amazing start!
SRV did love the Legends like Johnny. I saw an interview on RU-vid with Chris Layton & Tommy Shannon and they said when the arrived to play a concert at Red Rocks B.B. King was on stage playing. Stevie asked why. They told him B.B. was opening for him. He said No, he should never open for him like this. Great interview. Thanks for playing Stevie. I'm now subscribed.
What Michael is saying is exactly right. This video of SRV above all others is a masterclass of dynamics and emotion, never mind the best in class playing.
Exactly well said As a son of a blues man i write. unfortunately the "Gift" skipped me fortunately i was able to witness several moments like this. Heres to the long 4 set bar jam session wood choppers. Bleed on !!! Good times Thx for your passion
I didn’t believe in miraculous occurrences until 1982. That’s the year SRV entered my life. He was otherworldly to say the least. Thanks for this. Love your channel.🎶🔥🎶
