fellow Michigander and guitarist here…also been to Elderly a few times; bought guitars there. nice to see and hear Mr. Daniels discuss, express, how the guitar is so much more than wood and steel.
Great interview! At 71 getting back into guitar about 15 years ago this really resonated with me. I’ve gigged out solo 18 times and great advice to keep it like you’re on the back porch. Yes often the guitar is your only friend. Thx guys!
I think every musician would benefit from hearing this interview. The way he speaks about his relationship with guitar, is something I think we could all benefit from being reminded of.
First of all Thank You Jeff Daniel’s for showing your love of music. I’m still a huge fan! Thank you Guitar Magic! Seriously, Jeff is the REAL deal. Love how candid he was…. ❤ Very thrilled to find this gem of an interview❤
@@guitarmagic that’s exactly right! And, a side that very few knew about. When he said he keeps a good share of his music private and always will , keeps it for himself… yes the interview was real, genuine. Real as it gets and that is something to see. Loved it. Thanks again for capturing this side of one of my favorite personalities and I’m thrilled he is as you said a danged good guitarist/ musician… who knew… so very cool! High fives all around! ❤️
Really enjoyed that. A lot of things that Jeff talked about rang true with me as an ex actor and a singing/harmonica player. Thank you for your channel and bringing Mr Daniels on and sharing his story. Wonderful. UK Based Musician.
What a wonderful interview of a wonderful guy. Thank you for this video...can't wait to share it. I am a nubie player at 65 years but can already appreciate what a guitar can mean to a person. Jeff's take drives home the power of a single acoustic guitar by itself. I'm reminded of John Denver's song This Old Guitar. I'm new to this channel, this is the first video I've seen of yours...now to watch the other's. God bless you for your style of interview...looking forward to seeing more.
Wow! Thanks for this note. Glad you enjoyed the interview. Happy to hear you are playing guitar. It is never too late to start and the guitar always has something to teach us. Hope you enjoy my other videos and please do share with friends of the guitar.
Thanks for watching. Appreciate your comment. I think Jeff's musical talents caught a lot of people off guard... but man, can he tell a good story or what?
Loved this. Been following Jeff's playing for a good while now (thank you you tube) & just to watch his development on guitar is stunning. When my finger's find your string's has long been my favourite, & I was happy to see other's love & appreciate it after Kelly Clarkson's show, is just great. Great great interview, great artiste. Keep on Jeff do not stop.
Glad you enjoyed the interview. I felt like Jeff really needed an interview as a musician, not an actor that plays guitar… so I asked if he’d do it… and… he did!
This was absolutely terrific. Just had to put my Martin in hock yesterday. Im heartbroke. Ill get it back. Just heard back from fedex while watching this. Loading trucks at 3 am....no problem. Shes a custom D18 with tigers eye mahogany. I have one month. This helped me as im pining. What a great interview. Lotta love. I play all day, everyday.
I’ve had to pawn a thing or two over the years, at different shops. They all let you pay the interest to renew the loan when the time is up. I renewed a couple items more than I care to recall. Check your contact/receipt, call the place and ask them, all pawn shops operate by standard policies. It’s a lot easier to save up the amount of the interest, if you don’t have enough for the total loan plus interest.
Jeff Daniel’s….. Thank you, The world needs more Jeff Daniel’s in it. Jeff you are refreshing, sincere, down to earth. A Midwestern guy who is genuinely true to his beliefs and honest about his life experiences. You connects with me on what your guitar means to you. A constant in your life that is always waiting for you to play. Let’s not forget the other higher power that’s always there for us - the good Lord. Amen and God Bless Jeff Daniel’s.
Great, fun interview. Reminds me that sooo many actors are true artists, many paint, sing, write, dance, etc. It's like they have to create, and have more than one outlet to do so.
Thank you jeff....funny thing is, were close to the same age...you really blew my mind...we are in a way very similar... songwriters, songwriters full of memories......caused me to smile and reminisce.....thanks brother!
I've spent a lot of my musical life alone with the guitar. I'm not winning any prizes for entertaining huge audiences, but it means a lot to me. Take good care. See you on the porch.
Great interview and great interviewing. I like JDs stories and outlook lots of us can relate to. I learned somethings about myself while finding about Jeff and his need to express himself artistically...
Thanks for watching. Appreciate your comment. It makes me so happy when the interviews help folks out there learn about themselves and others. For somebody who is more famous for being an actor, I sure did learn a lot about the point of music from Jeff.
excellent interview and fantastic job as host. How Jeff mention in the beginning “It will be refreshing to ignore the other thing I do," He just took us to another knowledgement about music .
Absolutely outstanding interview. As a singer & bass/guitar player, my drummer & I used to giggle at some live bands we went to see or were playing on the same bill as, that would do all the cliche theatrics like jumping around on stage & be too unfocused on the musical content. We called it “All show, no go”. We used a philosophy that concentrated on “All go, less show” & we got good at some very challenging material. It was so fulfilling at many levels & what a bond we had.
What an interview. As a guy who has never acted, but spent a life on stage playing music, I realized during this conversation, that's it's all show business...and I will do my best to keep that in mind.
What an incredible interview i knew he played guitar and wrote songs but not to this extent. I've been a performing guitarist and singer for 50 years and i feel the same way about the intamacy when a singer has only an acoustic guitar. I too am a finger picker and played lead guitar in a five piece band but my heart was always with the acoustic guitar. I would love to meet Mr Daniels the musician one day. Thank you Jeff and thanks for this great interview. Awesome
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed the interview. Sounds like you have a lot of music under your fingers. I played with a pick for 10 years, then, almost overnight, I switched to fingers. It just worked better for me to get my ideas out. An acoustic guitar and good songs go a long way.
Sweet interview…Jeff is so very grounded it’s hard to believe. I can relate to just about everything he speaks about when talking about his relationship with the guitar. It’s my best friend when needed & always ready to play. We come from pretty much the same area, same age. Too bad I’ve never saw him live, maybe in the future though. Great interview again thanks!
That was awesome! I've always had mad respect for Jeff Daniels. That level has just increased. Been playing for almost two months and just found the channel. You have a new sub sir. That's good work. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed Jeff's interview and happy to have you as a subscriber. Keep playing! I do believe there is something good in the guitar for everybody.
I wanna hang out with Jeff. He reminds me of my few very close friends & the close relationship we have. It’s the quality of conversation that ever lasts, even after they’re gone as I’ve found out. Few “Get it”, & it’s like gold when you find them. Quality over quantity.🙏
Great interview! Love his insight on music and the love for the guitar. Love to see him and Jeff Bridges together. Maybe they can call it the Jeff and Jeff tour. I think I’ll pick up my guitar and head to my back porch.
Thanks for this interview. I have known for years about Jeff’s singer/songwriter side. My name is Jeff and I’ve worked in sales For years by day but I write/sing and play away from work. My stuff will probably never see the light of day. Jeff Daniels gives me inspiration though. So, thanks again. Great Interview. 🎶
Glad you enjoyed the interview. Thanks for watching. Lots of people have opinions, but I think the goal of creating - just to create - is a worth while endeavor. I don't think others need to hear my music for it to be meaningful to me and my purpose... although I do want others to hear it. Be well. Keep on doing your thing!
Been front porch sittin, pickin on the guit-fiddle somewhere in Mississippi for years now and I wouldn't trade it for the world! Something about this place just speaks to your heart soul deep down Its hard to put in words, but once them strings start singing and your foot starts tapping you know exactly what I mean! Mississippians are just built different round here. Most of the greatest to ever do it, extraordinaryily talented and unique musicians/artists/athletes/etc. To ever step foot on God's green Earth!! Keep on keepin on pickin on them strangs..
I can relate to his guitar history, almost verbatim. Started playing piano at 6, was given a cheap guitar at 10 y o, bought an Alvarez 12 string in 74. I crawled inside that Alvarez and didn't come out for 50 years. The world has changed, and I now own a 41 Gibson acoustic, 74 Alvarez 12 string, 73 Martin acoustic, a 2000 Epiphone Les Paul, and a 93 Taylor semi hollow body electric. I had a stroke last December, which left me with some paralysis in my left arm and leg....70 now and in my soul I can feel every note, every chord, every lick, from every song I hear... Life is about change. BRING IT ! 😁👍
Fred it seems you are a big acoustic player. Those guitars are all super instruments. My path was not the same as yours and Jeff D.`s ,as a player. I went from trumpet for my musioc mandatory middle school credit but grabbed a guitar the same year 1979. 57 now and my Gibson Les Paul, Ibanez Premium and about 8 others. Still playing every day like you sir .God bless Fred.
Hard to believe Dumb and Dumber is something he had to do for a paycheck; Jeff Daniels is a real Renaissance man. His approach is similar to Steve Allen...great similarities. The stories are incredible. I like Dave Alvin and Chuck Prophet... Cheryl Wheeler would have you laughing then the song would tear you apart. A true master class, thank you!
What a wonderful interview, not much a movie buff, but can relate to speaking through strings, and Elderlys professionalism, some of the best music ever is 1 or 2 on a porch
Jeff, one guitar that takes you off into lala land and you just start to create things you never thought of before. That would be a rubber bridge guitar, with a pickup and flat wound strings. I took an old Kay guitar and now it sounds like heaven. And if you want to just buy a new instrument, Orangewood sells one.
Great interview! Jeff Daniels a Michigan treasure. I'm from Michigan. Been to The Arc saw JJ Cale (after show got back in line bought a ticket for his second show) saw him & Christine Lakeland twice in a row. Originally from Lansing so grew up going to Elderly Music. Love your work Jeff! Thanks!
Another facet of Jeff, good Travis picking! I liked your singing and and enjoyed the song, well done! Oh yeah......... almost forgot, you're a damn good actor! 😊
I gotvto see him perform his music at Workd Cafevlivevin Philly a few years back . Amazing dude! Look up his behind the scenes comeback when he was challenegd about being up to the his parts in Gettysburg.. Freaking Epic. He commenced to do it in one take.
First of all Jeff is one of the best modern actors in American cinema, and gives James Dean and Brando a run for their money. Then you have found the imense satisficaction that comes from writing your own songs and letting your emotions pour out picking on a 6 string guitar. There's nothing else quite like it. You can play to 6 people or 6000 and get the same satisifaction. You are no doubt an artist of the finest caliber right up there with Doc Watson who was a genius at what he did with his music. Be what you Be, one of my song titles.
My back portch is around a camfire for 20 or less. It's my happy place. As soon as I get to the campground, the first question out of everyone's mouth "Jeff, where's your guitar". Money can't buy that feeling.
It’s like I heard Emmylou Harris say, “Music is too important to leave to the professionals.” Me, I say “Play for yourself first, your circle second, your audience last.” Not that the audience doesn’t deserve the best you can give them, but playing for the audience alone will not sustain you or give you joy, in my experience. Now, if I ever get to the place where large audiences turned up to hear me, I might change my mind.
Personally, I think, if we aren't making room for regular folk to create music, we are squandering a lot of potential. I'm glad the pros are out there doing it and giving us a reference point of what's possible, but a lot of us feel compelled to make music for no good reason - and that's OK!
Great subject matter and interview. It's okay to be like our heroes and mentors but always stay true to yourself and be original. Even the best of us possesses flaws. No one is going to beat you at being yourself.
Happy you enjoyed it. I learned a lot from Jeff. He's not the usual guitar player I talk to, but his perspectives were very informative. Thanks for watching.
I had the same experience in grade school. Teacher looked at my teeth, had me sing Do Ra Me, then said, “Trombone.” I played for a couple years, then nothing until I picked a guitar in my 40s.
This was a great interview that was also inspirational. If only he didn't have TDS. I do disagree to the back porch being enough. If someone is writing songs, they should be shared with at least a couple of people. Even if one never gets paid for performing a song, it is much more fun when it is shared.
I have always played the guitar. It always clears the mind, on your best or worst day. I never wanted to risk losing that by becoming a musician, for an income, that could lead to failure, so I never tried. Now I am 60, and for the last decade, it has become one of my biggest regrets, that just keeps growing louder and louder every year. I love the guitar, but I feel like a coward.
This comment hits hard. I'm sure you're not alone in the struggle. You didn't ask for my advice, but I do hope you will be kind to yourself about the decisions you made and focus your energy on the beautiful music is still in your reach.
Keep playing! The guitar supports your singing and singing gets you close to your heart. The breathing technique involves using muscles, your ears, your mouth, throat and diaphragm. This deep breathing and intricate breath control is self nurturing and has a beautiful calming effect on your whole body. Music is a medicine. Along with that, lyrics feed the mind and heart. It’s a real mood lifter. Better than Prozac. So, whether or not you play for others you must play for yourself. It is an awesome gift you give to yourself. I sing and play for myself and I liken it to what maybe what it’s like to practice yoga. It is like a form of meditation. I by nature, am not a performer, but I love the way it emotionally and physically supports me. So, keep playing. 👍
