What I find amazing about this is that Mike League walked in to the studio on a Monday with nothing composed , by Thursday he had 8 songs composed and every musician literally had 3 days or less to rehears. I dont know how 15 different musicians got together and have a perfect chemistry, but I am so glad it happened.. A true piece of musical art that I will never tire of listening to.

The more I listen, it's like Larnell is playing keys too, and Corey is percussing, like they are matching plays and riffing off each other in merging duet hence that wild connecting yay that Corey gives. "Keep going. You get it! Higher! Closer!" Someone said it's like everyone is playing solos in perfect harmony. Corey heads off to Andromeda and Larnell could not have written it all out in advance. Much is improv.

I love Snarky Puppy and have several of their albums, but honestly, they've never come close to what Lingus is. I think there was something supernatural that happened during that song, because it's beyond amazing. I can listen to it on repeat for an hour straight and never get tired of it. As a keyboardist, watching and hearing Cory Henry's solos (the main one and his fills during the outro sections) makes me wonder why I even try. Stupid good. @TheBigdane84
@TheBigdane84 2 года назад
Yes!! It's maybe (most definitely) my bass player bias showing, but Mike League does a couple things in this track that really creates the sauce as I'm concerned. I mean, other than composing and arranging it. When they go back into the main theme after the first guitar interlude about 3:53 in this video his bass fill is just nasty, then about 10 seconds later he chooses to double the horn line. So simple and fleeting, but something about how on top of the beat the horns are and how that line was slid in just a millisecond behind the beat just drips the whole song in stank and swag for me.

Hi from Japan, As others have pointed out, if forced to give this a label, I guess 'jazz fusion' ... or just plain 'jazz'. If the word 'jazz' sounds old fashioned, it is probably because the word has been used to describe a variety of styles from Dixieland to swing, to bebop, to hard bop, to cool, to third stream, smooth, and so on. The use of electric instruments is probably the dividing line between traditional 'jazz' and 'fusion'. For those not familiar with this genre, a few of my favorite standouts which have a similar feel to Lingus include: 1 - Chick Corea and Return to Forever ... Vulcan Worlds ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RycYchunTKc.html 2 - Herbie Hancock Headhunters - Hang Up Your Hang Ups (Live VSOP) ... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VErtzRe98Ic.html 3 - Weather Report - Havona ... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sMQUFvv0WRY.html 4 - Pat Metheny Group - First Circle ... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PVBoDx_1dTc.html

At the climax of a breathtaking solo, Corey gives Larnell the merest of glances: “I’m coming out.” Then Larnell plays in the horns for the “trading fours” outro. Everybody acting as one organism. You asked about genre. Many of us from the beginning of Fusion in the 1970’s would classify this as Jazz-Fusion. You might want to listen to some Brecker Bros., Bob Berg, etc. these are clearly Jazz players who have also listened to Rock, Prog Rock and perhaps some Pop aesthetic. Over all you have the elements of many “classic” Jazz Fusion bands - horns, keys and synths, piano, bass, drums, percussion, and off course guitars.

Look for another artist named Jacob Collier... coincidentally he performs a song with Snarky Puppy... a love song in 14/4 called, “Don’t You Know”, which also features Big Ed Lee on Sousaphone

Hard to imagine they went to school and weren't just placed on earth by an entity to just go ham on instrumentals. But seriously - thanks for checking out the video! Crazy how this video reached people who have some connection to the band

Yeah, crazy how small the world sometimes is, my band director roomed with the bassist in college

Jazz with funk elements is sometimes called jazz funk and jazz with rock elements/instruments is called fusion. I'd call them fusion with a dab of funk or sth like that.

Sums it up pretty nicely! I honestly don't really care that much about genres but I enjoy that they kept some rock energy in there. Spices things up a little

been trying to figure out the time signatures today. I think the start is 5/2 ...seems to make most sense to me like that. Then with the faster horn section stuff going to the guitar riff is 5/4 with phrases half as long, then back to the first theme in 5/2. The solo through to the end actually being 4/4 surprised me though, could not figure it out at all for so long. had to work backwards from the end. Now when there's just the kick and piano and the k/b solo starts I can just feel the underlying 4/4 but it's so difficult! Am a musician but not Jazz, is not second nature to live on the off-beat ;-) edit: Just saw Soyan get to the solo part and he's nodding with the 4/4 immediately. respect.

This reaction vid was cool. Very respectful. But you HAVE TO come back with another one on Lingus. Stop it whenever you feel you want to point out anything. The way you did this one... gave this one so much respect, makes me WANT to hear YOUR comments throughout the whole performance. So, PLEASE, come back again on this!!!!
