When I was 20, I had started to date my best friend. I had a lot going on at the time, and we were struggling. We had broken up, and worse, I felt like I was losing my best friend. We were both at a mutual friend's house, and Heart of the Matter came on the radio. I was singing it under my breath, and getting a little misty-eyed when I looked up, and our eyes met. To make a long story short, we've been married for 28 years now.
Honestly, I didn't know that Mike Campbell wrote the music for Boys of Summer, and Heart of The Matter, but I sure am glad he did. They are both great songs, and Henley had so much talent with the lyrics.
The whole album End of the Innocence has many varied artists, Axel Rose, Edie Brickell, Bruce Hornsby and many others. The End of the Innocence album is the greatest single album accomplishment for Don Henley hands down. The album had multiple hits that garnered major air time on the radio.
@@adotintheshark4848 Korchmar and Henley worked together for years. This song was written by Henley with Campbells music. Korchmars work with the Section goes unnoticed. One of the best session groups ever. Responsible for lots of successful songs through the 70’s.
No matter who you are interviewing, when I hear them say, "Boy! You've done your homework!" it just shows you are the best. No one else can compete with your knowledge!!!!
@@ProfessorofRock, its more than that. I was crying throughout this interview and the reason was in the words of Mike Campbell, as it finished, for he knew he'd met a good man. I want to see you up there, Professor of Rock. When Israel is gone and Palestine is whole, know before Palestine can melt per Isaiah 14:28-31 there is a revealing of the power of Christ Jesus per Revelation 11:7-15, so choose the love of the man on the cross and go up there to continue your interviews with the living and share for all of us the music you love.
@@ProfessorofRock Agree with TeschVR and others here, great interview Professor! I learned more about Mike Campbell, Tom Petty, and some of Don Henley as well as music creation and production in the last five minutes, than I could have anywhere else. Mike was a great interviewee, seems like a cool cat.
I was 15years old at the time and my father was 35. It was the first time our music had really intersected. I fell in love with Dons lyrics and emotion and my Father appreciated his hero from his favourite band The Eagles. My dad has dementia now but we still go for drives and listen to all of Dons stuff and we still bond to this day. Wish I had a DeLorean . Love from Australia 🙏👍
Wow, I was 35 that year, also. I, too, remembered Don Henley from the Eagles. That’s still a really really good song. So glad you’re still connecting with your Dad, despite the dementia. I was the caregiver for my Momma as she traveled deeper and deeper into dementia. My Momma passed over 3 1/2 years ago. God bless you.
I was 12 years old in Australia back then, for my 11th birthday my parents had bought me a National stereo which had a graphic equalizer & detachable speakers with a single cassette deck finish in grey color. I remember recording boys of summer off the radio on my black cassette & just playing the song over & over & over. DeLorean indeed. Thank you for making me remember a wonderful time in my life.
Henley was one of my favorite solo acts in that time period. Sunset Grill, All She Wants To Do Is Dance (great video), Dirty Laundry, and of course Boys of Summer. All classics.
Sunset Grill is in my list of best rock songs ever. Funny thing is, it's that arrangement, which evokes a "big band" sound, that makes it. Cross-pollination of genres produces some of the very best results.
And his solo concerts were AWESOME, opened up for himself, July 4th 1993, with an acoustic set, including "The Last Resort". Greatest concert of my life.
‘’You keep carryin’ that anger, it’ll eat you up inside”…..most profound line ever written. I’ve quoted it to friends a thousand times when they were angry at someone for some stupid reason.
From 'The Heart of the Matter' You threw me off for a minute. 😊 Great song! *Edit* OK I get it now.... They went into that one too. Maybe I should listen to the discussion first? 😅
" and the work I put between us, you know it doesn't keep me warm", the album version is the best, some lines were removed in the single. "I'm learning to live without you now, but I miss you babe"
The Heart of the Matter and The End of the Innocence are 2 of my favorite DH songs. Those songs carried me through a rough time in my life. It’s like Henley knew what I needed at that time.
Not only do I remember Pierce Brosnan as Remington Steele, I remember when Bruce Willis was on Moonlighting, Tom Hanks was a Busom Buddy, and watched Jimmy Kimmel chug beer and do black face on the Man Show.
Boys of Summer is like a movie, like a film. There are characters you can see in you mind as the music goes by. Amen. Who hasn't written a movie in their head and imagined all the visuals while listening to that song?
"Heart of the matter" is such an underrated/underappreciated song. Henley's voice combined with the beautiful musical accompaniment is just MESMERIZING
If played a few keys lower, Boys of Summer might have worked with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but ultimately, the right guy ended up singing it. And thanks for covering this! My dad was a HUGE fan of the Eagles (which belatedly made me a fan in adulthood), and I've always had major respect for Don Henley as a singing drummer.
"Boys of Summer" is without a doubt one of the best written Pop / Rock Songs of our Generation! It is "ethereal" and captivating at the same time. Mike Campbell simply wrote a "Classic" for us! Thank you!
There was a 20 year old woman that drove her parents to crazy playing this song so much!! She would also go to friends and family members that had cable so she could watch MTV to catch a glimpse of a certain music video!! She got to see him in concert and was overjoyed to see him live!! The woman was me and the song was Boys Of Summer by Don Henley!! That young still comes to life whenever I hear it!! Thank you so much for doing this video clip about this song!! Now you just started talking about another song that means a lot to me!! Don Henley is my favorite male singer of all time!! There's only 3 others that are even close to my love of Don Henley!! They are Vince Gill, Glenn Frey and Randy Meisner!! I am definitely sharing this on my Facebook page!! Thanks again Professor Of Rock!! Cindy Snow
As I listened to songs in my youth, I never had the appreciation for the amount of work it takes to create a great song ~ the coordination of all the instruments, the vocals, the lyrics; and then take into account everyone's interpretation and point of view on all the little details. That's what made these songs great! I sure appreciate it now. Thanks for the insight!
No matter how many times I hear it, when I take the time to listen to the lyrics and reflect on the meaning of The Heart of the Matter, it makes me tear up every time. I think it’s one of the most meaningful songs ever written. We could all learn something from the ability to forgive, not only others, but ourselves.
I loved this interview. I didn't know that both of these amazing songs sung by one of the all time greats, Don Henley, was a collaboration with Mike Campbell. Thank you POR for depth of knowledge you bring to the music of my life.
This was one of my favorite songs and videos of the ‘80s. For the longest time it was hard to find the video on RU-vid, but now it’s there for all of us.
😮 mind blowing, so glad Don took it to where it should be. Mike absolutely put together a masterpiece. ❤ this song. Had it on almost all of my driving tapes.
Two just fantastic songs, by one amazing artist both passed on by Tom, what a wild and beautiful story! Thanks for sharing this!! Mike is so right about them being like movies.
Another episode with deep personal connections. Boys of Summer and Sunset Grill are still on playlists I make today and get cranked up every time they come on. So many memories of parties, good people, and just having the time of our lives. Same with so many Joe Walsh songs another former Eagles member. Getting the stories behind the songs that I had never heard just add another dimension to them. Well Done!
So well said, man .. We have had many of the same experiences.. To some of the greatest songs, Ever !!! We are at the start of another Summer , I hope it is a great one for you And your loved ones .. Crank up the music, brother .. Ands let's do this !!! Cheers ! ☕️😎💨💨💨
The boys of summer is a monumental 80s song. The video is killer, too. Campbell is an amazing musician. It's easy to overlook his genius because he's not an in your face guitarist. This song made Henleys solo career blow up. It's dark and gritty, and touches emotions deep inside you.
Who doesn't love Boys of Summer? It's hard to imagine this song being sung by Tom Petty. Well, it's not hard to imagine the song in Tom's voice, but it definitely wouldn't have sounded as good. And it probably would have been slower. So maybe it's a good thing for rock history that Don Henley got to sing it.
Mike Campbell has been one of my favorite musicians for years. He is the best most under appreciated guitarist of all time. His licks are always perfect and tasteful. Thanks for all of the excellent music.
For all the monetary rewards, he seems to really appreciate more the connections and relationships - to other artist, the music, people, etc. - as the enrichment in his life. He has found his peace. The money does get him better weed, though.😅
Funny, a similar thing happened with the eagles song “Victim of Love”. Don Felder wanted to sing it but was shunned to the side and Don Henley took the song. You should definitely make a video about this too, very interesting story the eagles. Love what you do man!
End of the Innocence album was/is incredible. His best work since Eagles IMHO. WYNF Tampa Bay radio sponsored a "low dough" show so saw this tour in St Pete for $10. Top notch. Special to me cause I never had chance to see Eagles. Same summer Roger McGuinn played free show in Bayfront Park on Back From Rio tour. Bliss. TP, Mike Campbell all over that album. King of the Hill. Trees are all Gone. 12 string Rickenbacker just jingle jangled.
One of the best songs of all time!! My late wife and I used to listen to this song so often. One day driving down hwy 1 in Malibu the song came on the radio and all the memories came crashing through. It was moving in a way that I just can’t describe. Timeless song, beautiful.
The mary jane spark of creativity. Legendary and carved in digital stone. We're so fortunate to be living and listening to this emotionality charge genius. Its magical evertime i hear 'boys of summer' and ' heart of the matter'
The Heart of the Matter came along at a time for me when I needed it the most. I was supposed to get married just out of college. She said yes and then left me one day after that. It wasn't until I heard that song that I actually cried, let it all out, and forgave myself for everything. Good stories...
I saw a dead head sticker on a cadillac! I'm sitting in a tiny Toyota Tercel with my husband a a friend, getting topped up for a Grateful Dead concert. We watchecd a cream colored Mercedes pull in to the parking lot. 2 gals and 2 guys got out and changed into jeans and tie dyed t-shirts. I mean, they stripped down to underwear right beside the car, in public. We 3 just sat watching, smoking, and they waved to us as they headed into the venue to the concert. This was in Seattle in 1983 or so, can't remember what year exactly. Gotta love how a simple lyric can trigger such wild memories! Thanks Professor! I haven't thought about that in a really long time. My husband is gone now, and I am 70 years old. It's kind of amazing that I made it this far. Don Henley was another great concert I saw, in Anchorage Alaska. Front row seats, they closed with Everybody Wants To Save the World, an old Tears For Fears song. Wow Wow Wow! Security wouldn't let us stand up and dance, they on the floor of the George Sullivan Arena. That part sucked.
and talent that goes so far beyond guitar... Keyboards, early tech adopter, mixing artist. One of the best. He's a big reason these songs have the legend they do...
When I heard the live version of "Heart Of The Matter" on the MTV Hell Freezes Over concert it became my favorite song for awhile. And I have a lady friend who's favorite song from the 80s is "Boys Of Summer". Two home run hits right there.
I'm learning to live without you now, but I miss you sometimes.... I love that line from the song, whenever I hear the version of the song without it, I can't listen to it. A really great line and song by Henley.
Boys of summer came out when I was 15yrs old an I still get goosebumps everytime I hear it an just go straight back to my awesome teenage yrs. Perfect song for us 80s teenagers. Thank you
Boys of Summer came out in 85, which was that time in HS when I was taking the SATs, applying to college (I would get in early action, so I got in well before the spring), going to the last of the autumn dances, getting really excited for what lay ahead . . . and feeling really nostalgic (already, somehow) for all that I was leaving behind. Boys of Summer played on the soundtrack of my life throughout that time, and though I was a HS student (and a girl, at that), not some yuppie guy reminiscing about his past, it fit my wistful, sentimental mood perfectly. To this day, it evokes the memories of that time in an instant, while also making me realize how many more summers have passed since then, how many more memories I have made.
I remember hearing this song for the first time in early spring of 1985 when I was just starting my hobby of picking up broken tapes and fixing them up to find out what was on them. One of the very first ones I picked up was a dirt cheap "type 0" 60 minute cassette strung out all over the school playground area that I picked up strands of during recess, and this was what was on it....... Boys of Summer - Don Henley Lover Boy - Billy Ocean You're the Inspiration - Chicago I Would Die 4 U - Prince I Just Called to Say I Love You - Stevie Wonder I Want to Hear It From Your Lips - Eric Carmen I Feel For You - Chaka Khan Neutron Dance - Pointer Sisters Billie Jean - Michael Jackson Urgent - Foreigner Hard to Say I'm Sorry - Chicago Operator - Midnight Star One More Night - Phil Collins Such a great introduction to all those songs.
I can see why it will last. It's one of those that makes all of us remember a time in our lives where life was much freer and fun. Time does not change that, just the when.. Great song
Such a genuine guy. Realizing that collaborations produce some of our best popular music. Those opening chords on Forgiveness are iconic, and he woke up with them. Like McCartney and Yesterday. He's right, it's almost magical.
I was in high school when boys of summer came out. What an amazing song! Now it’s one of my 18 year old daughter’s favorite songs. A times master piece.
I am half surprised this video is still up and Don hasn't sued him to oblivion and gotten the channel canceled yet.... He must have a soft spot for Mike and want to get his story out there... maybe not a complete and total monster... just mostly.
My favorite Henley song, but I can’t help but wondering, if he’d of done Boys Of Summer with Joe Walsh instead of Henley. Campbell & Walsh on guitars with those lyrics? 😮😮😮
There are a handful of songs that define key moments in your life - Boys of Summer is one of those for me. It just hits my soul. I get a little choked up when I hear it even today.
Mike Campbell is great guitarist and I'm really glad he is now doing great with his own band the Dirty Knobs; also what do Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton have in common aside from both playing James Bond, they both have worked with Stephanie Zimbalist Pierce was on Remington Steele with her of course and she was on the mini series Centennial with Timothy Dalton have a great week and thank you Professor.🇺🇸🎵🎶🎼🇺🇸
I was a mobile Wedding DJ when Boys of summer hit. Boys of summer was perfect to keep a light upbeat mood. Personally, “ Heart of the matter “ was the song I unexpectedly fell in love with. Ironically decades later, it became an anthem to my life. Songs like Dave Masons, “ We just disagree “ and “ the Beatles, “ We can work it out “ dovetail nicely with it. But none touch me like “ Heart of the matter “
Man. Thanks for the history of this. I think it worked out well. I'm thankful for the producer for joining the two and putting a phenomenal song together. Absolutely, love this song. Especially at the end of summer.
I truly am so grateful for this channel. we get to have an insight into the music that shaped our lives or was the backdrop to it. I love he has reverence for each brought something to the table to make such a beautiful song.
Boys of Summer was one of my favorite songs of the 80s but I never knew the story behind it. Thank you so much for bringing this to us. You truly are the Professor.
A blast fron my high school past! And another great back story. I suffered a stroke nearly two weeks and nearly died. Luckily, a group of kind stranger called from help amd saved my like. I've walking every episode since I've been in the the hospital and rehab and PoR has had a certain therapy. Rock on PoR, and thanks!
I remember buying the album in '89 and listening to it for a few days before handing to a friend at his house knowing he would love it too. I asked him the next day at work how he liked it and he said it was one of the best he had heard in a long time. Probably some of Don and Mike's best work IMO.
Boys of Summer is one of my favorite songs from the 80's and my all time favorite Don Hennely solo career song. I often drove around with it blasting with the windows down. Heart of the Mater was another good one. Even though it was a Don solo song, I remember the Eagles played it when they first reunited and did their Hells Freezes Over tour and it was kind of their theme song for the tour given it was about forgiveness (at least that was what Joe Walsh said in an interview on the Tour DVD).
Great interview! You really bring your heart to these interviews and your subjects always give back because you demonstrate that you've researched them, their lives and their careers! It is such a show of respect!
Great interview, Professor you have really done so well! I've been watching you from the get go & your always there everyday. Keep on keeping on, T.C.B. ⚡🤟
I absolutely love both of those songs, The Boys Of Summer and Heart Of The Matter. Not only are they both musical masterpieces, they take me back to that wonderful time growing up in the 80’s. Those songs will always be in my 80’s playlist. 😎🎵🎶💯
