Coming up next, icon John Oates tells the surprising story of the classic Maneater. This all-time hit came to John after he sat next to a famous actress in a restaurant and she began to cuss like a sailor telling dirty joke after dirty joke… Oates was no prude, but he was SHOCKED. All of a sudden, one of the most familiar lyrics of the 80s came into his head, and within a few minutes, he was jotting down Maneater… His musical collaborator Daryl Hall made some tweaks the next day and they recorded it. It became a #1 smash. Who was the actress and what was the change that made this a hit? Find out next on Professor of Rock.

Click the bell so you never miss out.
It’s time for another edition of our series Revelations where featured artists take us for a deep dive into their greatest songs and albums and you get the insight you won’t find anywhere else. Today we are going to go in depth with a member of the most successful duo of the rock era. John Oates of Hall and Oates on their 1982 #1 smash Man-eater.
If you were to ever make a list of the most iconic lyrics of the neon decade, Watch Out Boy She’ll Chew You Up would be near the top of the list. And that exact line came to John Oates and a hoity-toity restaurant in New York City when a famous model and actress came and sat at his table. John Oates will tell you the Story along with a few stories of the other huge hits they had in that moment and then I want to elaborate a little further on the song’s impact as well as solve the mystery of who this mystery model woman is that inspired such a cut-throat song. Man, I’m so sad that Daryl Hall and John Oates, the greatest duo in history are no longer together. It’s a heartbreaker… but at least we still have the music.
When I did that interview with John I had to rush through it due to time but I was able to glean some more info about the making of the song. After he tried it with Edgar Winger and it was that Reggae thing. Daryl Hall would say that he advised John Oates to change the groove to a Motown thing. and then John Oates sang it for their frequent collaborator Sara Allen. So he sang the all familiar.
“Oh here she comes/Watch out boy she’ll chew you up/Oh here she comes/She’s a maneater…and apparently he had some other words that would the keep chorus going and She immediately said, “Drop that stuff in the end and just go, ‘She’s a maneater,’ and then stop! Oates thought it was crazy. He was used to singing it with that filler line but then he thought about it, and I realized she was right. And it made all the difference in the song.
The music video was a mainstay on Early MTV… It opens with a woman walking down a red staircase, and the band playing in a dimly lit studio with partial light falling down on them. The band member all step in and out of the light to sing their parts. A young woman in a short party dress is shown in fade-in and fade-out shots, along with that scary black jaguar, that goes with the line "

I worked for a commercial photographer that did Prom shoots every spring from 85 until 90. My job was to take the orders and money then make small talk while the couples waited their turn. Once when it was late and things were winding down One On One came on and a beautiful girl, truth be told way to hot for me, came out of the crowd and pulled me onto the floor for a slow dance. When the song was over she kissed me on the cheek and slipped away. I never did track her down. She was one of the few that didn't sign up for a photo package. But thirty odd years on I remember that dance.

I loved "One On One" and don't think it gets the recognition it deserves. It was winter of the 82-83 school year during basketball season. I was a freshman and the JV cheerleaders always put decorations on our lockers the day of our games. A sophomore named Jenni was the one who did mine and I thought she was absolutely beautiful. In my mind's eye, this was the song we would dance to together at the school dance on any given Friday night. Alas I never worked up the courage to ask her out before she moved to a different school, but it is still a wonderful memory as my first high school crush.

When Darryl Hall "Did it in a Minute" and said "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)," my reaction was "Say it Isn't So" (my favourite song of theirs), "It's a Laugh," and it must be "Your Imagination." They used to be "So Close," but now they're "Out of Touch," and their next meeting, if there isn't a "Missed Opportunity" for "Adult Education," won't be "One on One," which shows that "Some Things are Better Left Unsaid," and you can't get "Everything Your Heart Desires."

My brother Michael was a Hall and Oates fan!! I think he still is!! By the way, Kelly LaBrock was famous for another famous quote from the 80s!! Remember the commercials for Pantene shampoo and conditioner where the model says Don’t Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful!! That was her!! Thanks for another interesting video!! Cindy Snow p.s. Love me some Hall& Oates!! Back when I was a kid - mid seventies, my family would take weekend trips to Chicago to visit relatives . Hall & Oates was playing on the local radio stations. My first experience hearing them was Sarah Smile on the R&B stations. Had no clue they were White!!😆😆😆. Their music is timeless & has been in my playlist for over forty years!! Great video Adam!! Blessings to you and your family!!😍😍😍🙏🙏🙏

I loved Maneater, but the one that really got me was Say It Isn't So. I remember being fifteen and hearing it for the first time on Annie Nightingale's radio show late on a Sunday evening in late '83 (I'm English and grew up in London). It was one of those great 'Wow' moments and the next day I told my parents I wanted Rock n' Soul Part 1 for Christmas. I still got goosebumps when it was briefly played on this video.

I simply could not reckon up the hours and hours and hours of late night radio from Annie Nightingale, (whispering) Bob Harris and John Peel that I listened to as a teenager. Maybe one of the reasons that I didn't do well at school, but they left me with a lifelong love and appreciation for the music of the 70's

I've started to really listen to John Hall's vocals on 'Abandoned Luncheonette'...what a beautiful voice and quality he has. I've continued listening to his lead vocals and harmonies in other songs in subsequent albums. Wow! Favorites: 'Las Vegas Turnaround', 'When the Morning Comes' 'Had I Known You Better Then' and 'I'm Just a Kid' - all John Oates on lead vocals.

Our church youth pastor “warned “ us about this song. He took it literally and perversely if you get my drift. Ironically, we were young teens of 13-14. We had no idea what he was talking about until older kids enlightened us. If said pastor hadn’t said anything, we wouldn’t have known what he was talking about.😂 So what did we all do? Go buy the album of course.

I was never a huge pop guy, but one thing I always loved about 70s and early 80s pop like Hall & Oates is that the voices and style of the artists were so widely varied. Other examples like Billy Joel, Olivia Newton John, Bob Segar, Michael Jackson and Dionne Warwick just rounded that superb vibe in play with H&O. It wasn't just one narrow thing.

“A yuppie bowdlerization of Motown” was how Hall & Oates was described to me by a good friend back when. While they clearly lacked the edge of some of the more fashionable artists of the time, Hall and Oates left us some true classics that I am no longer ashamed to admit to liking. “Private Eyes,” Kiss on My List,” “You Make My Dreams,” “Say It Isn’t So,” “Rich Girl,” “I Can’t Go for That,” “Wait for Me,” “Method of Modern Love,” “Sara Smile,” “Out of Touch” and so many more: Hall and Oates cemented their legacy as all-time greats and it’s a shame that they can’t put their differences aside to bask in what should be their golden victory lap years.

I liked Hall and Oates in the eighties, but they weren't my favorite. Several years ago John Oates and a beat box percussionist came to perform at Salt Lake Community College. I'm a photographer for the college, so I went. I was thoroughly impressed by that duo. John Oates was engaging, and charismatic. His music and singing were outstanding. I gained a whole new appreciation for Oates. It's harder to impress me when you don't depend on a band to cover your bad vocals, or autotune to smooth things out, as some of today's singers do. He was just plain good. Glad he's still around doing his thing. Bravo, John Oates.

I like what I like and listen to that type of music but I am not fanatical about tunes on the radio. If its on, I listen to it in the back ground. Being a teen in the 80s was where everyone wrote songs and band played their own instruments rather than the manufacture garbage on X factor and American idol. That was the decade for a lot of great music, and you put some great facts about those songs history in these clips. Good work!

Model and actress *Kelly LeBrock* starred in a film called *_The Woman in Red (1984)_* along with the late actor, Gene Wilder. The movie's entire soundtrack including the title track is sung, written, and produced by *Stevie Wonder.* In 1986, singer-songwriter *Chris de Burgh* released the international hit song *_The Lady in Red._* There is a brunette in the music video, but alas - she is _not_ Kelly LeBrock. The 1984 film and its Stevie Wonder title song is, *_The WOMAN in Red._* The 1986 Chris de Burgh song is *_The LADY in Red._* Easy to confuse the two. Cheers
