Jazz Congress is a conference that brings together members of the global jazz community to network as well as grow the audience for the music. The annual gathering also seeks to nurture businesses and organizations that promote, produce, present, market and support jazz. The third annual Jazz Congress took place on Jan. 13 and 14, 2020 at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center.

23.30 when Russell speaks about sound, it makes so much sense to me where he is coming from. When I heard him play for the first time , it was the sweetest happiest sound I'd heard and it made me feel so happy. I will never forget that because it was a feeling he transmitted to the audience. I can't remember the song he played but I can remember the feeling if warmth. I will miss Russell so much Such a sweet guy.

Tell your own story, that's the most important lesson. Listen to the stories of jazz icons like Miles, Montgomery, Coltrane, Rollins, Monk, etc. Absorb it and then make it your own story. Develop your own idiom.

That jam in the middle of the discussion was a great musical conversation, beautiful phrases and great communication between the musicians. The statements were clear and the dialog was flowing, the voices were pretty discernible and the exchanges were very spontaneous and coming fresh and fiery. Wish I could hear this live!

As much as I love jazz guitar I can not imagine anything worse than 3 guitarists in the same room.

Talking about guitar sounds, if Bird or Coltrane played guitar, I bet they wouldn't sound like those bland, undynamic sounds beloved by 40s and 50s jazz guitarists.

Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Chet Atkins …. those are the main 3 you’d see on tv, black and white tv, in the early 1960’s. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and others occasionally appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show or the Jackie Gleason show.
