Featured is a sharp Rapid chess game (15+10) between 16-year-old Gukesh D and Magnus Carlsen from the 2022 Aimchess Meltwater Champions. The opening is a French Defense, Steinitz variation, with the game immediately sharpening after Gukesh's f5 break. Carlsen is the first to gain an advantage through the complications. However, once Gukesh applies pressure to Carlsen's 7th rank with a rook, it's Carlsen who buckles under pressure, allowing Gukesh to have the last laugh.

Jerry is the John Madden of chess and I mean that with respect to Jerry and John. The line drawing analysis simplifies strategy and tactics to welcome everyone into a better understanding of the game.

I get the fact that Madden won a superbowl as a coach and we really don’t know if Jerry has won any superbowls, but they’re both great teaching ambassadors of their respective game.

If nothing else, we can agree to disagree that Jerry is, in fact, John Madden.

That idea to trap to the queen in the middle of the board is a gorgeous one. Great game by Gukesh!

Very pretty finish by Gukesh towards the end when he finds a winning move with queen, which was very difficult to find. Nice commentary too.

I know he’s not technically as good just yet, but I really do see a champ in him. It’s the way he holds himself, reminds me of Magnus a lot actually. Very poised and very clinical in the candidates and so young. He’s gonna be the best before long and I think he’ll take pragg with him. Great Indian players coming through.
@wolfspain7385
@wolfspain7385 4 месяца назад
Like Pragg but I really don't see the comparison. His style is exciting but he hasn't actually accomplished anything yet...Gukesh is younger and seems to win in the big moments. Not to mention in a head to head, he is up against Pragg. I'd like to see his development in the future.

French is quite risky, but is one of the best openings for black that has some actual winning chances like the Sicilian for example, because of many imbalances which leads to many interesting games on two results
@zvezdanjasovic3185
@zvezdanjasovic3185 5 месяцев назад
Well Magnus had a better position until he blundered. French is a great opening but it requires knowledge, it allows white to establish that pawn on E5 and that forbids black to develop on F6. It’s the opening where you can make a huge blunder just by casting kingside, in many instances Greek gift can be played against you if you castle early

it seems most of blacks problems come from the King in the center of the board/ this IS Common in the French, but as soon as Magnus sees the game opening/ get the king out of there/ if not 0-0 then Kf8 ,at least (shallow look, i did not put the game through the cpu)

this is a common flaw in many chess videos, but I find the title to be misleading. The outcome of the game had little to do with the french defense. Black was better at one point and it was equal in several other positions as pointed out. Then one player gets outplayed or blunders toward the end and a chess vid says the opening got busted.
@syndrome2009
@syndrome2009 5 месяцев назад
I was thinking the same thing. Gukesh didn't really "break" Carlsen's French. He outplayed him at the end, but the game was equal or in favor of black till the last few moves.

Taking White's a-pawn on move 23 for Black seems a little hasty. An interesting alternative might be for Black to first play 23...g5, attacking the White knight at f4 causing the kight to retreat to d3 on move 24. From there, play could continue, as follows: 24...f4 (attacking the queen) 25. Qe1 Rb8 (defending the b-pawn) 26. Qe2 (setting up a discovered attack on Black's a6-rook. And now Black can play 26...Rxa2 with an advantage. Here is the complete sequence: 23. Nd4 g5 24. Nd3 f4 25. Qe1 Rb8 26. Qe2 Rxa2.

I guess one can be lucky in a game. It was a complex combination. That Gukesh played it so well, is commendable, as he has shown winning the Candidates tournament and has a good chance to be at least crowd World Champion! The rather semi-infamous number one Carlsen hanging over a title he refused to defend.
