Technical video week 3! This is a brief into to the Primary Flight Display and Multi-Function Display in the G-IV SP. We show the basic layout and some of the functions available to us as the pilots.
Presentation really well done! I never had anything like what you guys have in the way of tech stuff. Must be awesome having those tools do so much for you! Great job guys. And John even smiled at the end!
Seriously I love your videos - I feel like your life, work and videos could be an actual documentary on TV. Keep up the great work, great pair of airmen.
As a casual observer and wishing I was there, I like your videos and how you explain stuff that I can very easily understand. Thank you, safe flying. Ralph from Colorado
Thanks for taking the time to do these videos. And thanks to your employer as well. The flight plan video was great too. Can you demonstrate the checklist some time? I would also like to know about the required cockpit communication protocol explained. Very nice work - thanks again.
So good of you to show this thank you. Watch you now every time would like to see before flight planing weight balance v speed what you really feel about atc fbo todays training your history.
Very nice. The last time I flew anything, the flight deck had "steam gauges" with the exception of Pro Line II. I was recently a passenger in the right seat of a year old 350i with Proline Fusion, and although I really liked the widescreen format I was totally lost. That is the difference two decades of technology brings!
Wow, great instructional fyi video. So much integrated situational info at your fingertips. No going back to VOR crosschecking I take it (LOL). Takes a lot of training to make all of this second nature... but you two certainly have done just that. Thanks for this video.
Great video... I just bought a new Prius Prime, and every time I drive it I think of this video. It has a a Main display, a MID (multi-informaion display, a 11.6" display for navigation, entertainment and climate, and a Heads up display(HUD) for speed and power use. Heck, the owner's manual is 784 pages long!
Wish we had those MFDs in the Navy's GIVs(C-20G) just straight up old NDs.. We did have a big old cargo door on the starboard side though.. Awesome video fellas.
I really love your technical videos.I am not a pilot myself but have always loved flying.Too expensive and not enough free time to pursue a career. If I had a choice of Corporate or Commercial, I would choose Corporate. You guys have the opportunity to see places that Commercial pilots only dream about. I would also think flying Corporate would be more of a challenge since you are always going someplace different. Benefits are probably better flying Commercial but you guys seem very happy flying Corporate which is most important!
Excellent, and had no idea you had the latest mods to your MFD on that G-IV, although I do recall now you said it was a later one based on the serial #. And so many have to use a separate ipad to even see airport layouts, to have that at your fingertips along with everything else just make that thing a dream to fly. One request I would have is to make these instructional ones a bit longer, as we would like even more detailed information. Know you don't have all the time in the world, and that you've found short vids to get lots of views, but it would be appreciated if you could slow some of them down just a tad if you could.
I am catching up on all of the videos and really like the technical videos. The displays walk through was awesome. Is there a way you can walk through what would be your suggested route to becoming a corporate pilot? Keep up the good job with the videos!!
Hey guys, you are really doing an amazing job. can you do videos of different systems (the technical details) before showing the in practical. I am new to the airplane that is why I am thinking like this. Good job guys
Thanks for the PFD and the MFD tour. Next if you could a tour of your in auto pilot controls in the center. I note that when ATC gives you a new heading, speed, or altitude your hands go to the center to do those changes. That would be cool to see.
Down low, a separation of 500 feet is somewhat common, but up in the flight levels everyone should be at least 1,000 feet apart...unless they are climbing or descending of course.
if you could fly any commercial jet in the world, what would you fly? and why? LOVE this videos more so than the other, and i love all your vids! keep 'em comin
That's a tough question, as Gulfstream doesn't make any commercial jets...HAHA! I suppose if I were going the commercial route, I would want big and new. B787 perhaps. I've never been a huge Airbus fan, so I would stick to Boeing.
I'm sure its VERY hard to beat a Gulfstream... would a 2018 G-650 be night and day difference from your G-IV now? Great choice with the Dreamliner. USA built all the way!!! not a fan of Airbus either. My top 5 favorite planes, and would love to pilot, are G-650 Dreamliner G-550 F-16 Falcon G-IVSP Thanks for the reply man, god bless
Would like to hear about your guys flying experiences before getting to your current gig as corporate pilots. You may already stated that info and I just missed it. You guys are awesome pilots.
I enjoyed this and some of your other videos. Just came across your videos a couple of days ago. Already subscribed. Even though you have all of that info displayed by the systems on the aircraft, do you also have something ipad or some other device based ( such as Foreflight, Jeppesen, etc.) to use for backup or planning. Just curious...thanks. Keep em coming...
Great videos, keep up the good work guys ! Would it be possible in the future to make one about your exterior pre-flight inspection and/or about maintenance check maybe ? Thanks again for your videos and fly safe :)
Incredibly fast response ! Thanks ! I'm a video editor for video game industry in paris and i'll be happy to help if you need any assitance (not that I think you need some :)) .
That's awesome! All of my editing is self taught over the last year or so...I could definitely use some professional input. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated! There have been several things I have wanted to do with my editing, just don't know how to with the software I use. Thanks again!
Feel free to ask, I might be able to do quick tutorials if needed. I was a pilot between 16 and 18 and wasn't able to continue but i'm a 777 virtual pilot now and love watching your vids.
Jon was scoring you on the test. I had to give you a 99 as you missed telling folks about the airspeed and how it relates to Mach and Altitude, but hey, that is fodder for another episode.
Hey Sean great video as always... My question is on your TCAS where it was showing traffic and then a -5 0 does that mean the traffic is 500 feet below your present attitude?
Great job guys, nice to see that you are normal people.. and bring us along for whatever it is you film.. i think you need GoPro as a sponsor.. how can we help ?
Actually it would be nice to see you get with Garmin's camera system, as they can show speed/direction right on our screen in the lower corner, like Steveo has on his later videos, a partnership with them wouldn't be a bad thing at all, as they now make some Great aviation cameras too!
A video on the center console would be cool also. I want to know what the "wheels" on each side of the center console are that spin every so often. The Airbus has them also and I see pilots hit a button on the control stick to make them spin. Also when you land you say "we have 6 lights" or "6 green lights" right after touch down and just before you call out ground speed, what lights are those?
Sure! The wheels on the sides of the console are the trim wheels. If the electric trim on the yoke were to fail, we could use that to manually trim the elevator. The 6 lights after landing are for the thrust reversers...three for each side. It means they are fully deployed.
Hi CPL! what's the name of that electronics suite? whose responsibility is it to update the database of the Jeppesen charts? i absolutely love the weather overlay on the map! looks like a great tool. Thanks so much for the videos and cheers from a fellow pilot (B737NG)
I believe they call this avionics system the Honeywell Primus Elite DU-885. Our maintenance generally updates the FMS and charts. If we are on the road and get into a pinch, we can do it ourselves.
Nice video ! Is this a retrofit of your A/C the enhanced MDF ? I've already noticed that in another video in Mach mode your speed tape is reversed. Is that Gulfstream philosophy ? Maybe you can do a video on the controller placed on your glare shield ? Safe Flights Clément
This is a retrofit in our G-IV. All six CRT screens have been replaced with LCD screens. This gives us the upgraded functions. Good catch on the upside down speed tape! I believe they flipped it on future Gulfstreams...but I'm not sure. All G-IVs are like that. I like the idea of doing a video on the display controller! I'll definitely work that one in very soon!
I was wondering the same about the speed tape direction. I've been in a TBM where one of the airspeed indicators moved clockwise but the needle pointed downward when on the ground. I've also had some with airspeed indicators that moved counter-clockwise. Seems Socata can't really make up their mind haha. Also, very jealous of all the information that ND provides. Great video! :-)
The G-IV is the only plane I know of with the airspeed tape like that. It always screws me up when I get into something else with the "normal" speed tape. The slip indicator on the right side always sticks out a bit in cruise, but the left is always right on. We haven't quite figured that one out yet.
Hi Guys, I love the technical information. Would you go over how you choose a route and how you file it? And how you receive your clearance? Thanks, Paul
Question: the speed tape on the PFD: when speed in knots are being shown, the larger numbers are at the top with the lower speed numbers on the bottom half. When you reach higher altitudes and transition over to mach numbers, their values are reversed (higher mach numbers on the bottom of the tape). I thought higher mach numbers would be at the top but they are not. Why is that?
I wish I had a good answer for you on that one. It's the way Gulfstream and Honeywell designed the system back in the 80's. I'll see if I can find someone who might know
@@CorporatePilotLife It's no biggie, I was just curious. I work at Flight Safety as an SIC on the Citation II and V. We have a lot of Gultstreams where I work...I'll ask one of the GIV instructors...maybe they might know. Thank you.
The "Ref and #" refers to Vref + # knots. Our ideal approach speed is +10 knots. The Vref speed is a calculated speed based on our weight and several other factors like outside air temperature. The "Sinking #" refers to the rate of descent on final approach. Ideally we want to be around 700 feet per minute. We would call that out as "sinking 7"
Hi guys! This may be to personal but maybe you can give me a ball park answer. How does your pay compare to the majors (American,Delta)? Next question: I'm 50 years old, is it too late for me to start a career? I started flying lessons last year but not at a very fast clip. Got maybe twenty hours in. Great videos, keep em coming
Early on, the pay is better with corporate. Later in the career, airline pay is better. I actually got a gentleman his private pilot certificate at 50...he went on to fly for the regionals a short time later.
We've been to Anchorage a few times, but its usually just a tech stop for fuel. I did spend a few days up there back in October. I'll try to give you some notice next time we're there!
The flight director is only shown on the side flying(unless on an ILS approach or on takeoff)...Jon was flying that leg, so it wasn't shown on my side. The "brick" is out on my side, but its right on the money on Jon's side. We have played with the trim a bit, but that's where it feels the most coordinated.
Just habit...we're very comfortable having them on. Not wearing them is kind of like being in a car without my seatbelt on, it just feels like something is missing.
No EVS for us...the simulator I trained on had it. It's pretty cool, but not super useful on a regular basis I think. I'm sure someone on here will strongly disagree with me...just my opinion for the type of operation we do.
Peter Neumeier SVS, EVS and other systems are very useful given the environment you fly in. I used to fly an early 1990’s model King Air 200. That turboprop is very much a utilitarian aircraft, it can land on relatively short runways and even on gravel/grass with the High Flotation gear option (Bigger tires and wheels). I wish the King Air had SVS/EVS back then, had some dicey night time landings. My understanding is new King Airs have Collins Pro Line Fusion with touchscreens and SVS, with an infrared camera as an option for low visibility. If you’re not flying in high terrain or doing low visibility approaches, regular guidance is fine.
One thing I'm still confused about. I see 4 different speed indicators. Mach .80, which is a little over 600 mph I think. Then 243 knots below the mach indicator, which is like 280 mph. Then true air speed. Then ground speed. 4 different numbers. Obviously I'm missing something.
That means we turned off the auto throttles for landing. There have been a few accidents from guys who forgot to turn them off before landing and they just kept on going...
I see. I actually meant Australia. If you were to have to come and fly here, you would find our airspace/instrument clearences simple when you compair it to the clearences that you are used to getting in the US.
Nice catch! We've actually played with that quite a bit...the left side shows it right on the money, but the right one hangs out just a bit. We've put the trim in to center the right side and the left is a little out, but the fuel flow goes up slightly (increased drag), so it seems that where we have it is actually coordinated. The sensor for the inclinometer is just slightly off.
If you'd like To sidebar a little bit, you and I, just so I can gain her trust through you first... be happy to send a bio and pics. Let's be honest, you/she's cross country but shooting for the moon. And after watching a few videos of you guys in the cockpit I was glad to find a couple where she got to chime in a little bit. I also do appreciate you trying to play Cupid and match people up so I appreciate you saying that she was single.
Is Francine still single? You mentioned it in an earlier video but I didn't catch the time stamp on it? Does she have any interest in a 42-year-old never married no children lawfully trained medically educated private pilot? Happy to send pics and a bio for her review. Aaron San Francisco, Ca
