Love my AK, and a good american soft point (federal fusion is my flavor) in a 7.62x39 will turn someone's chest inside out, but I can keep shots on target much easier in rapid fire with my AR, you know how they say it isnt about the gun it's about the shooter? Since an AR kicks less, it makes anyone a better shooter, therefore making it a better gun.

Honestly, they both are exaggerated extremely in certain aspects. I've seen AK tests where the AK fires one round and seizes, and I've seen AR tests where they just keep running even after being dumped in mud. The AR will keep running, but so will the AK. Its down to personal preference. I switch my preference about three times a day.

exactly, I love my ak because it packs a much bigger punch than a 556, but the thing about the ak's reliability, that is because it is a sloppy gun, tolerance is insane, so if you have one of the really sloppy ak's that are all over the place, they will be reliable, but get one that came out as a tighter gun, its gonna lock up just like an AR

"Prom queen vs biker bitch" is probably the best analogy I've ever heard for the argument. Just ask yourself what you're buying the weapon for. If you're looking to reliably drop something relatively close in adverse environments, the AK 47 is your gun. If your looking for long range accuracy in an environment that permits consistent maintenance, the AR 15 is for you.

@barnabywylde2224
@barnabywylde2224 8 лет назад
+smn475 TangoFoxTrot's Dirt Test 2 and InRangeTV's mud test videos make one question the true reliability of both rifles in adverse conditions. A trend I notice in various torture test videos, often the tester is actively putting debris in the AR while actively removing debris from the AK. However, when they are tested on equal footing the conventional beliefs of reliability are reversed.

I remember in some countries, they would take a rope soaked in kerosene, and run it down the barrel of an AK47... took not even 5 minutes to take the bolt apart, then drop that in the kerosene, then rub it with motor oil to get it cleaned... took about 10 minutes tops... these rifles were rusty, dirty, looked like they were used to dig holes, those rifles NEVER misfired or malfunctioned.. The round is another reason why you go with an AK... But, the key words here are, if the AR is KEPT CLEAN it will function well.. if not, then ... a few days, or weeks, or months, in the SH*T, I can tell you which rifle you wish you had.
@poppabear9279
@poppabear9279 9 лет назад
you will see, time and time again from youtube channels, that they served time in the USMC, or other military services, then return back here and the AK / AKM is their primary rifle now. The M16, or M4 rilfes are still not 100%. They are a damn fine rifle and I own a couple that have been fairly reliable. There's a reason why someone would make the AK their primary rifle however.. and it's because the AR fails, the small 55 to 62 grain bullet loses steam after 200-250 yards and the ability for the bullet to perform it's intended job is highly diminished. On the other hand, the 7.62 x 39 ballistic testing and wound cavity is not as dramatic as the AR. under 300 yards. That little tiny bullet is devastating. But, the AK will bust down bricks and does good at going through minor barricades. My magic bullet is the 5.45 x 39 in an AK-74. I'm fairly new to shooting this round, but in the last year, found this to be very good accuracy, very hard hitting, extremely reliable, able to penetrate steel core RC engines we've been shooting up, able to penetrate hardened steel plate and just one badass, well thought out round and rifle. My AK-74s are as accurate as my Adams arms piston AR, yet as reliable as my AK47.. perfect combo!
@JoeyP322
@JoeyP322 9 лет назад
You're 100% right... I think a couple AK47s (MAK90 or Polytech) and a couple AK74's and you're good to go.... Not sure if Obama had bad intel on the 'steel core' Soviet surplus 5.45x39, or he just doesn't want his conservative libertarian enemies to have it. Either case I have to start a new 'collection' - any idea who makes the best AK74s?
@poppabear9279
@poppabear9279 9 лет назад
Joey P Just made 3x Bulgarian from brand spankin new AK-74 parts kits. The guns didn't even have scratches from the bolt carrier being fitted inside of the steel receiver rails. Fabulous! The AK-74s were solid, the trunions showed no signs of even being fitted to a rifle, and even the bolt itself showed no wear or marring from sliding inside the sheet metal rail on the receiver. These Bulgarian 74s are better quality than any of the Izhmash AKs built by Arsenal. The receivers used were chromoly, hardened in a kiln to 1525 deg F, then oil bathed in a homemade forming tool to keep the receiver straight. The final assembly, everything was trimmed on my CNC, and applied Tarjac green and black Cerakote. The make, feel and everything about the rifles leaves my friends drooling and wanting them. So, Bulgarian brand new matching #s parts kit is the answer. Cheers and have a wonderful 2015!

I can build and fix my AR with a few simple tools. The ak needs a 2-ton press to set rivets, a special tool to set the barrel in the front trunnion. A tool to remove rivets. They mentioned the negative about the gas impingement system - putting gas into the bolt carrier which adds heat a fouling and affects reliability. But they didn't mention the negatives about the piston system on the AK. On an AR the only thing that moves is the bolt carrier which is inline with the bore and the shooter's shoulder so the recoil of the rifle is straight back allowing the shooter to stay on target. On the AK the piston is ABOVE the center of the bore so as it comes back it pulls the barrel of the gun upward as well thereby pulling it off target. Worse yet, the piston is actually attached to the bolt carrier and this acts as a lever which magnifies the problem of muzzle rise. Shooters say that the AK isn't accurate. They are talking about follow up shots because the rifle pulls the shooter off target with every pull of the trigger. I like the piston-drive AR. The piston is super light and not attached to the bolt carrier. This decreases muzzle rise and increases reliability. I have an Arsenal Arsenal SLR-107 and a custom piston-driven AR. I would grab whichever one I had the most ammo at the time.

You forgot to mention the horrid open sight system present on each AK. Those aperture sights *really* make the target pop out. It's almost silly that people bother placing optics an ARs at all. I have a Mauser 98 that has those same Eastern European sight acquisitions. Aiming is god awful! I can bullseye with it, but it takes almost twice as long to get it lined up.

The idea that the AR needs to be cleaned a ton to work is false. I've carried one in iraq and AFG as an infantryman and not a single malfunction, and with minimal maintenance. Also the FN 49 used a short stroke piston, not direct gas impingment. and piston ARs aren't use a short stoke piston, whereas AKs use a long stroke, quite a big difference.

The video repeatedly refers to an M885 and an SS109 round. I found that very confusing. IIRC, M855, not M885, was the standard 62gr, "green tip", 5.56mm ammunition, we were issued for the GWOT and I believe SS109 was the either the NATO or possibly the Fabrique Nationale nomenclature for the round. M193 was the lighter stuff issue to the guys since Nam. I've heard from friends that are still active, that DoD decided to pick up a new environmentally friendly M855A1. It replaces the lead, in the back of the jacket, with a bismuth alloy, without changing the steel penetrator in the nose. However, I don't recall ever using an M885 round.
@BlindSpot1000
@BlindSpot1000 9 лет назад
The M855 is the SS109 with a 61 grain bullet. it replaced the old M193 55 grain. The newest is the "green" M855A1 where the lead is replaced with a copper core.

BlindSpot1000 Thanks for your reply, but I feel certain M855 is not a 61gr bullet, in M855. Maybe that was a typo or you need to double check something. Again probably a simply typo on IV8888's part rather than a lack of knowledge, but it could be annotated in the popups, without re-filming the video and losing the old footage of Barry.

@shananagans5
@shananagans5 8 лет назад
+Atilla The Fun No doubt. Just a few spare parts will keep an AR running optimally for the life of the barrel. If you ask me, that little extra maintenance every 4,000-5,000 rounds is more than worth the benefits the AR offers. People act like spare parts will be impossible to find if something happens. Personally, when I build a new rifle I just buy a spare bolt, 3 sets of gas rings, 3 extractor & ejector springs, a hammer spring, a couple of buffer springs & a spare gas tube. That has me set as far as maintenance for the life of the gun & all that can fit in a sock stuffed in with a box of ammo. Not to mention, you can carry a spare bolt in the grip. In the rare event something actually breaks, a spare bolt can be slapped in very quickly, under a min, & covers a large % of problems that could disable the gun. Every 4,000 to 5,000 rounds I replace the springs in the bolt, the gas rings, and the buffer spring. At 10,000 I replace the bolt, gas tube, hammer spring & buffer spring. (the newer chrome silicon buffer springs may last the life of the gun) It sounds like lots just listing it here but that's over the life of the gun. That results in replacing things before they break & it's only about $100 in parts to keep it running like new for 20,000 + rounds. Some say the AR requires excessive maintenance but I wouldn't consider taking 20 mins or so & swapping out a few parts three times over the life of the gun excessive.

@shananagans5
@shananagans5 10 лет назад
J Carlos Rosiles Realistically they are both great guns. You won't flat out go wrong with either but, depending on what you want to do with it you may very much prefer one over the other. If you like to go shooting & just blast off a bunch of rounds & blow up water bottles at relatively close ranges the AK is for you. The AK is more accurate than many give it credit for but they are much harder to get that accuracy out of them. They aren't fun to sit down & target shoot with. Well, they are but not like the AR. If doing precision target shooting is important to you, the AR is better. The AR will also do an impressive job blowing up water bottles but the AR just doesn't have the same feel & attitude of an AK. The attributes of both that people argue about are drastically exaggerated. Yes, the AK will run dirtier & is more reliable if you don't maintain it well but they still jam. They still need maintenance. They aren't this mechanical device that will continue to work no matter what. Yes, the AR needs more maintenance but no, it doesn't have to be spotless. With normal maintenance you would give any gun & the AR will never give you a spot of trouble. We aren't in a war zone, we don't throw our guns in a river or a sand bank. Is the ability to withstand that really something you need in a gun? What I am getting at is don't rule out the AR because you hear they need to be spotless or they jam easy. They don't. Reliability isn't an issue unless you really neglect/abuse it. Don't rule out the AK because you hear they are not accurate. No they aren't as accurate as the AR but, if you take your time, they can do a 5" group at 200 yards. When I was younger I liked to go out & just blast away at water bottles or old cinder blocks. I didn't particularly like cleaning. I wanted to clean it quick & be done with it. I liked the AK back then Now that I am older, I like to take my time & shoot the water bottle out at 200 yards. I don't mind cleaning & I like to tinker. Now, I like the AR better. Just some things to consider. By the way. you will end up with both eventually. You should say you are trying to decide which to get first. :) lol Good Day !!

I never understood the argument that AK's should be reserved for less than well off people or military's. Doesn't it make sense that you would probably have to train your troops less on maintaining the rifle and use the saved time to teach them to shoot it instead or other important things? Wouldn't it would be a huge morale booster for the troops since they know that their weapon will go bang and kill something even if supply lines get cut off or there is insufficient time to really do weapons maintenance?Also, wouldn't it ease the supply lines a bit with less material needed for maintenance? Even if your military can afford a high maintenance weapon, why should it unless there's a huge bump in performance?

I'm glad you included the 545 in the video but it seems as if you forgot about him a bit.. Also barrel lengths... To get proper yaw and tumble out of an AR-15 it MUST have a 22" barrel. Shoot 5.56 out of a 16" barrel you're pissing in the wind. IN MY OPINION; The ONLY thing good about an AR's are the interchangeable uppers and how they are so easily accessorized. Other then that they are shit. 545 outperforms 556 in any ballistics test ANY day of the week. You can shoot 545 out of an 8" Krinkov barrel and still get proper yaw. Now for the 7.62... It has HORRIBLE ballistics. It's only good for punching holes through walls and laying down supressive fire. You can only sling so much lead in someone's direction before they chop you to bits... If I had to pick one to get hit by it would be the 7.62 because it would sail right through me. The AK74 545X39 is clearly where it's at.. I'd like to see you guys do an accuracy test and ballistics on the AK74 and the AR-15. The AK47 shouldn't even be compared because that cartridge has NOTHING to do with the other 2.. Honestly it's not even that useful unless you plan on doing most of your shooting through walls or car doors..

shmediaproductions I think he's suffering a bit from fanboyism but there is one thing he is right about. The 5.45x39 causes more damage to the human body than a 5.56x45. So arguably more stopping power without the disadvantages of the 7.62x39. On the opposite end of the spectrum the Chinese 5.8x42mm has some of the best penetration performance out of all the major rifle cartridges, however it tends to zip straight through flesh without much damage done.

***** You can't really judge the 5.56 or the AR from a Bushmaster. They aren't bad rifles but they aren't good rifles either. They do generally need some adjustment to get high levels of reliability. At that, they are still no Daniel Defense. That is one thing about the AR. You do need to spend to get the most benefits. You can't buy a cheap gun & expect it to run like a $1,500+ rifle.

While I like the .454 and the 300 winmag, the guns and ammo cost a bit too much for a starving college student. I love the Mosin for its history and the way it shoots. Hands down, it is my favorite rifle. You guys actually sold me on the 10/22 and the glock. Before I had been looking into a 1911 or a .45 revolver, but I like the economy of a glock and the 9mm, but I like the way the .45 shoots. Any advice on which caliber to choose? Accuracy, economy, and self defense capabilities are all factors for me.

+macstmanj3 whatever works best for you man, is what I can tell you. Glad you started to come to the gun side somewhat. Takes time for some people. Though, I will say that we do not have a gun problem. We have a social problem. More in mental health than anything.

Glad you came around. I’d recommend shooting a Glock 19.

Stick with ur gut get a 1911 over any glock on the planet there is a reason its been around so long and we still have forces choosing it over anything else out there glock ain't a bad gun but 1911 will keep you alive 110% of the time

I second your philosophy that you should own both. You definitely don't want an AR in bad weather or rough terrain. Also, you definitely don't want an AK in a 150+ yard encounter. One thing I believe that should be mentioned is the blade sight vs peep sight.

adding a piston isnt by any means a marriage of the AR and AK.. does very little to increase accuracy because the majority of the AR15s problems are in other parts of the design.. for example, when cartridges are stacked in a magazine, because theyre tapered they'll want to curve forward, but an AR15s magwell is straight and does not allow the rounds to do this causing a number of feeding problems other issue with the AR15 magwell is youre likely to have more seating issues with the magazine pushing them straight in.. with the AK rock and lock magazines as they call them you have more leverage to ensure a proper seating and the other major issue with the AR15 is the lack of rails in the upper receiver.. a hardened steel structure (carrier) moving inside a softer metal encasing (aluminum receiver) its going to cause excessive friction requiring excessive lubrication in short, the AR15 was a poor design, year after year some new accessory, add on, or modification to polish the turd a bit more, but in the end the failings of the AR15 are in the design itself and can never be fixed without COMPLETELY redesigning the rifle

Not to mention a lot of the piston ARs are not built to be piston guns, they have an aftermarket piston put on them (like Adams Arms). If I could afford an HK416 I'd consider having a piston AR.

Frozen Balsak i wouldnt, youll make the rifle heavier, and worse, more front heavy, you will increase the time it takes you to clean and maintain the rifle, decrease accuracy, decrease the reliability, and increase the number of parts that can fail all while completely ignoring where 95% of all malfunctions of the AR15 come from.. the magazine want to make an AR15 much more reliable?.. get an AR47 lower (the one that uses AK magazines), and use some bulgarian 5.56mm AK mags.. maybe even cheap galil mags and youll have solved one of the biggest flaws of the design

PMAGs are substantially more rugged than steel mags. Even the cheap-o Russians aren't using metal magazines anymore. Forget the gimmicky lower. Just buy better magazines.

Pretty weird how adding weight and possible stress points to the barrel that are not actually a part of the barrel while also adding moving parts won't aid in precision. Who'da thunk it? 7075t6 aluminum(what any upper receiver should be made out of, or better) is more than substantial for supporting the carrier. You're pulling a problem out of your ass, to put it bluntly. Even "modern" designs like the SCAR and G36(both AR-18s) use aluminum receivers. Of all the complaints I've heard from people that obviously came from them not knowing how to maintain their rifles, their uppers breaking or getting shaved by their carriers has never been one of them. Yes, the coating on the inside of the upper will eventually wear off(as it will in a steel receiver,) but the aluminum will just rub and polish for decades before it ever starts to lose any amount of material you need to worry about. The only sort of upper you'd need steel rails in would be a polymer one, and the AR-15 is already amongst the lightest if not the lightest "service" rifle you can get, so buying a polymer upper is like milking a goat you already roasted, it's not worth the time. Firearms with polymer receivers need steel rails, and they usually have them(think Tavor, Glock, F2000, AUG, Kel-Tec SU-16, etc.) Unless you're foolishly adding a piston system to the first operating system in probably ever to be designed specifically to exploit DI while using lighter materials, the rifle will be running soft enough to be just fine with insufficient lubrication. You'd even be fine doing it with most piston systems. The only modern steel AR-15/10 pattern upper I even know about is the G28's, which is a piston 308, meant to be used as a DMR/Sniper support rifle with a service life of probably 300 years knowing the modern German military. Too bad for you, most of us are just fine with incremental improvements in a system that will never be perfect(nothing will ever be) instead of our military's budget multiplying to adopt a new rifle every 5 years along with our taxes multiplying for wars none of us actually give half a shit about, even if having served or planning to serve.

wow, a lot of typing to prove what an idiot you are.. you do understand that when dissimilar materials rub against eachother, the softer one gets worn, in this case the softer metal is the aluminum, the softer metal is also going to have more give to it, and this will generate more resistance.. like sliding a hammer across a hardwood floor, vs trying to slide it across a carpet.. and in fact the properties of added friction of dissimilar metals is the basic for the delay in the blowback of the thompson submachine guns action.. so steel on aluminum = bad idea.. but hey.. if you want to keep lying to yourself that your AR15 is anything less than a piece of shit.. have at it.. you know what rifle those guns you just mentioned are based off of?.. not the AR15, but the AR-18 which is actually cheaper to manufacture and far more reliable than an AR15 because the engineers at FN and HK realize what a piece of crap the AR15 is and incorporated NOTHING from the AR15 design into theirs except in the case of the SCAR, a god awful magazine design (HK improved upon the magazines)
