As an animation student, I have to agree that a lot of people don't know just how long the animation process takes. It can take days for a team just to create 3 seconds of raw footage ready for editing.
@brendanmilburn9067
@brendanmilburn9067 3 года назад
It also depends on your budget and art style. For example Spider-Man Into the Spider-verse took 1 year just to nail the animation style before they even actually properly begun making the movie.

Depends on the tools you're using and your level of ambition, the greater the ambition the more time effort is involved triply so in the days cell animation and optical cameras. Storyboarding and key framing I think are one the least understood and appreciated elements of the animation process. The visual bones of the art, you blow it there every other step in the visual process that follows suffers Of course if you go with what I call the Ken Burns (even though he didn't invent it) slow pan approach to "animation" you can churn that crap out in pretty short order hell at that point its nearly more strait video editing than animation.

This came out in 1999? I would have said 1989. The garish coloring and scratchy line art looked dated as hell, especially considering stuff like S.E. Honestly, his comments on how the Japanese say things without actually saying them just kinda reminded me of Timothy Spall's character in the Last Samurai. It's funny how 5 million is considered a huge loss for a studio in japan, when you compare that to the 60 million lost on Food Fight here in the states it seems like small potatoes
@brendanmilburn9067
@brendanmilburn9067 3 года назад
I mean, it's most likely because of the different in value Japanese yen has compared to USA's dollar. I mean really high quality productions like The Wind Rises have a $30 million budget in USA currency. With that said though, Food Fight was a bigger embarrassment because there's no excuse of it ending up that bad of animation (and no, someone stealing the original movie is not a good excuse because that's when it should've been canceled, not horrifically salvaged), especially since 9 (2009) was able to be a fully CGI animated movie that's looks pretty good and had a $30 million budget.

@paireon3419
@paireon3419 3 года назад
Japanese cinema in general, including animation, has much smaller budgets to work with; for example, the budget per episode of an anime is on average something like half that of an American cartoon (and yes, this means Paw Patrol has more budget than pretty much any anime series). Also, most of the cash (even moreso than in the West) comes from licensing/merchandising, so if a film or series flops, it also kills any potential revenue from that.
@GeekCredTrivia
@GeekCredTrivia 3 года назад
@@paireon3419 not arguing the reasons why it's more expensive here, just that it's funny what is considered a major loss here compared to there. Plus one thing most people don't know is that sometimes big movie losses become tax write-offs oppose to most countries that probably don't allow that

I had to learn Japanese the hard way when I was stationed there in the 90s. Be grateful for these language programs. Quick story: I needed a dress uniform sewn in a hurry for a promotion ceremony and was able to get a tailor out in town to do it in a day. I dropped off the rest of my uniforms with it, but told them not to rush, as I could get the rest of them in a few days. When I went back, they had ALL the uniforms done perfectly. I was so impressed I gave them a big tip for the excellent work. This was how I found out that at most establishments, giving a tip tells them that the service was poor and I want to give them money to improve their business. The person at the counter was mortified and the owner was incredibly insulted. I had no idea why they were mad until someone explained to me what I had done wrong. TL:DR Learn another language and culture. It's good for you and prevents you from insulting people trying to help you.

Agreed. Too many other critics are the waifu-pillows-everywhere "weeb" types who constantly spam broken Japanese or so unbelievably elitist that they refuse to acknowledge anything else. While Bennett definitely prefers older anime, he still gives credit where it's due to some of the more modern stuff. Anime Abandon is perhaps the only anime-related RU-vid series I can watch.

Hideaki Anno - Turns his crippling depression into a decades-long money printing machine (that is also a cornerstone of anime) Mansamune Shirow - Turns his back on the world to draw as much porn as he wants (and also made a cornerstone of anime) Shinichiro Watanabe - Comes back once a decade to burn through a massive pile of cash to create something awesome, and then vanishes (some of which become cornerstones of anime)

Seeing something like this reminds us of the accomplishment that something like Appleseed and Bubblegum Crises represent. It's all too easy to think such accomplishments are easy and routine. Gundress reminds us that even with a team of experienced pros and lots of money, failure is still very much an option. As a huge Shiro fan, this is a double disappointment for me.

I watched this the other day, and while cheesey and full of tropes of the time, I've seen way, WAY worse. You want bad and insultingly incompetent anime? I could go on and on..... It tells a cohesive story and actually portrays a Muslim character as faithful to his beliefs and likable in the end in a scoundrel type of way. Yes, he is a terrorist and an arms dealer, but he's not a monster. For Japan, that's WAY more culturally sensitive than you can normally expect.

I know that anime does have its pros. But the balls of these people to claim that the actual ANIMATION was internationally revered, at the same time Disney was making fluid masterpieces like Beauty and the Beast.. I mean, let’s face it. The best animated anime in the world is still stiff and lifeless, from a purely motion-based metric, compared to Steamboat Willie.
