2:37 : LOL, poor cat ^_^ My group had this running joke, no matter what RPG we were playing: A Critical Miss never hurt anyone, but if it was a 'firearm' attack we would hear a cat cry out in pain in the background. This finally came around to bite us in the ass when, in a 'Champions' (Super-Hero RPG), we got attacked by a mysterious, humanoid cat-like villain, who it turns out was the cat who got hit so many times by stray power blasts, and was out for revenge! ^_^ Edit: Funny, for a game that doesn't encourage combat, the firearm rules can be quite complex (maybe to discourage combat, perhaps?)

Dude same! I remember my first campaign, every critical fail would result in the attack swinging and hitting a random old lady, usually knocking out her dentures. Sadly I didn’t get to use her as a final boss, but that would have been amazing!

The complex firearm rules is just to make combat a bit more interesting. Otherwise it would just amount to "I shoot... I shoot... I shoot"

I decided that if you fire a bullet and crit fail, provided crit fail is a rare thing like 1 in 20 or less the bullet would bounce off of a wall or something and you roll again to see if it hits you.

So what I’m getting is: Phineas is the deep roleplayer (The kind of guy who speaks in Shakespeare in a medieval setting) Rosalene is the social player and likes to have a deep backstory and prefers not to fight Lucielle is the whacky player who does whatever suits her, despite her character or setting And Scott is the new guy (and by extent all of us) as we watch and learn how to play Call of Cthulhu and learn about this wonderful party

I’m now imagining an Investigator bringing out a Machine Gun to Kill an Eldritch Being and just barely killing it. Then he Collapses from exhaustion and maybe a little madness. Just barely surviving against an otherworldly entity beyond mortal Understanding will do that.

So sorry if I just missed it, but in full auto, how does one determine shot count? all I got was that it could be between 4 and the entire clip, and then it was the entire clip.

You can shoot as many bullets as you want.

Divide skill by 10 to determine number of shots in a volley, then the player decides how many volleys he wants to fire, up to the entire drum. The Thompson fired 850 rpm, so even a 50 shot drum can be emptied in about 3 1/2 seconds.

I'm surprised how complicated guns are in Call of Cthulhu compared to the rest of the game. I've played a session of it before but there wasn't really a gunfight in it.

it's designed to discourage firearm play! you shouldn't be using a lot of firearm gameplay, especially not full auto firearms. usually, if the keeper is good enough at suspense and balancing, the only time that investigators use a full auto gun are at the end of a session or campaign to defeat the big baddie

well it mainly depends on what the keeper throws at you, for the most part firefights will be initiated by the players if they decide to bring a gun or 2 to an encounter

There is something I want to discuss. "Fanning the Hammer" (Single Action Revolvers), "The Mad Minute" (Bolt Action Rifles), and "Slam Firing" (Pump Action Shotguns [Which is what Benny was Holding]) These are all shooting techniques that allow these weapons to act as if they were full auto. "Fanning the Hammer" and "Slam Firing" are well known but "The Mad Minute" was developed the the British Army during The Great War (World War 1) only Phineas or someone like him would served in the British Army could possibly be trained to do it.

something else i wanna discuss that makes sense is with the firearm malfunctions, realistically a weapon malfunction, especially on a Lee-Enfield like Phineas uses would misfire and would either require the user to test their luck and pull the bolt up to bring the hammer back to reattempt to fire the round or to cycle a new round in, the worst case scenario with a Lee-Enfield malfunction would be the rifle explodes due to one reason or another which would send the bolt into the user of the rifle which can be pretty fatal, weapon malfunctions such as the one featured in the video where the weapon would be unusable until repaired would require there to be damaged or rusted parts that would prevent the firing mechanism to work or the bolt to get stuck

Thanks so much for these amazing videos. I’m getting ready to run Masks of Nyarlathotep (shhh don’t tell my players it’s a suprise) and I was really worried about learning CoC combat. I’ve had trouble with it when I ran 6th ed. But your tutorials fit my learning style wonderfully, thanks so much!

I disagree with the comments almost every epsiode about how Call of Cthulu *has* to be theaterrrr of the miiind. It's all theater of the miiiind Oh it's THEATERRR OF THE MIIIIIIIIND. No. It can absolutely be used with maps, mini's, etc--and it works quite well with it. You're perpetuating a misnomer that will prevent some people from ever trying with that nonsense.

5:30 - I love how Scott blushes when putting cream on Lucille's (well deserved) cat injury! Who didn't ship them!? Back off Phineas! Another great video thanks! :D question: I think that shotgun (11:07) would only get one shot because it's pump action (not double barrel) but I'm not sure?

Regardless of what is written in the rules, what are your thoughts about being unable to fight back shooting as a response to a melee attack/manoeuvrer? I cannot see why someone could not just pull the trigger as a response to a disarming attempt. I would allow it, adding a new penalty die to the list (i.e. shooting as response to a melee attack/manoeuvrer). The roll will go with that penalty dice since "shooting into melee" penalty die and "point blank" bonus die cancel each other.

I wish game designers would try shooting guns before they make absurd rules about full auto fire and how hard it is to control. The rules for full auto make more sense if someone is trying to spray an area firing a semi-auto gun as fast as they can pull the trigger and different full auto guns have different rates of fire which makes a HUGH difference in how many rounds you expend in a certain period of time. As an avid firearms owner and user I hate the way people portray guns in most games.

I’m former USMC and armed security. I have a house rule that if your pistol 🔫 skill is above 50 you can “gunfu” aka John wick. You cannot do this with shotguns, rifles, or machine gun. Being a lump of metal made my eyes roll. My players remember the controlled burst with auto weapons. Great video!! 😊

I got to say, going through the series, everything seems to make total sense except for full auto and insanity. They should do something a lot of other systems do with full auto, which is where it gives you a bonus to your role, to represent the cloud of bullets being fired, and then per every success you get an additional hit on target. That would make it a lot easier, and woodwork. You could also divide these extra hits among close by enemies.

I've always thought the "full auto does more damage cause you're shooting (hitting) with a bunch of bullets" didn't really match real world ballistics. I'd also prefer a system where full auto increases change to hit. Older CoC did that, but it was still a cumbersome system. (Add +5 percentiles per bullet fired to your base skill roll for automatic weapon, up to twice your base skill). Warhammer 40k roleplay, which is also d100, has a simpler system, a burst (3 rds), roll with bonus die, full auto (10rds) roll with 2 bonus die, and for every 10 you roll under your skill (ie, skill 50, then 40, 30, etc), you get one extra hit to allocate to that target or nearby target believably in range

In this game its got rules for hitting things with cars and trians and even high voltage wires you are absolutly meant to go out swinging. You could even get a black market 75mm cannon and blast mythos monsters with HE shells.

Personally I prefer the lethality rating option from delta green for automatics, where you roll percentile for automatic bursts, among other weapons.

So what I just realised is that Phineas' move at 6:31 was a bad move. It's similar to the true strike cantrip in D&D if you play that game. Wouldn't it have been better to take two shots on two rounds - with potential to deal twice the damage - instead of aiming for one round in order to boost your chances of hitting once?

Phineas was at long range for his rifle, so he needed a hard success to hit, so 35, with aiming he brought that back up to 70 on 2nd round, (bonus and penalty cancelled out), with his rifle doing 6-16 pts of damage, which is an almost guaranteed kill in CoC, at least on a human, it's not as bad a decision as it might have been in D&D.

That's kind of the point. In one of my old CoC campaigns, the party got so sick of getting destroyed in combat that they'd come up with creative solutions to avoid it. My favorite - burning down a building full of zombies and necromancers instead of fighting them.

I played as Big Game Hunter, British born, raised in South Africa and war veteran named Grant Tembo, (Tribute to Roland Tembo and Dr Grant from Jurassic Park series). Decided to settle in USA after his big museum (Hunting achievement) got destoryed during the great war, looking for new life and bring home his unique elephant rifle (.600 Nitro Express with limited rounds 20 rounds since i told the disadvantages and expensive round) and hunting knife (Convincing DM to let me have it and as myself a firearm enthusiasm and correct every firearms on each era during 1920 since we play this era) I gross out the DM and players by performing autopsy on Ghoul with hunting knife "for research purpose" and using my elephant rifle on mafia blown off his one leg off and try interogating even using clint eastwood quotes "Being this .600 Nitro Express the most powerful rifle in the world and could blow you head clean off. You can ask yourself one question do i feel lucky or do you punk?" A friend of mine whos a player gave me a smug look and say ayyyyy Clint Eastwood

Quick question: Why did Lucille get a bonus die for point blank range against the mobster with the gun, but did not get the bonus die for point blank ranged against the 2nd mobster? CJ just said she would get a penalty die for firing into melee... a) why did that not apply on the first mobster? b) Why would the bonus die point blank range not apply for the 2nd mobster? Thanks!

I'm eagerly awaiting your final episode for this because I'm itching to jump on this game and convince my room-mates to start a session (we were playing a lot of mansion of madness the last weeks), but I'm a total novice when it comes to RPGs. So your explanations help a lot. While watching this episode however, I start to wonder if you can just streamline some rules for the different firearms when playing as the keeper. So for example I let my investigators roll for throwing and firearms and not go into the details of which weapon was used exactly. Any opinions on that?

Keep in mind you can't do anything other than shoot if you take the +50 Dex bonus you must do your attacks first.

How come Phineas got extreme impale damage but the mob boss did not? Aren't both of them using shotgun? Edit: my mistake, apparently Phineas uses rifle which are better for long-range, thus his bonus damage.

Absolutely love this! Picked up a copy of 7th Ed. and then discovered these videos, they are so helpful. Excellent work sir! One doubt though.... at 9:50 I thought Escaping Close Combat didn't need a dodge roll, just good to go (as the PC's turn action) providing they are not restrained and have a clear route out. Also when Lucille was approached by the thug so much that she's was in melee, when she wanted to fire... point blank bonus and firing into melee penalty were cancelling each other out right? If someone could help with this, would be awesome. Don't Stop Thinking, keep up the good work!!!

It is usually a matter of context. I wouldn't consider that someone is in melee until that person makes a melee attack or is attacked by a melee attack.

I have a question: when phineas shoots dhe gangster engaged with lucille, why does'nt he have disadvantage? He took a turn to aim, but this only counters the distance disadvantage, when lucille is getting in melee range with the gagnster he should have a disadvantage, no ?

Thank you for these videos. I am playing my first ever game in a a little over an hour but I have been watching this video series getting ready for it for a few days now. This is so far, the hardest video to follow. But I got to say, compared to the Hero System (Champions), learning this system is a cake walk.

*{Smirks.}* Careful of shapes. Some things can get interpeted as something else entirely. That being said... Some guns are S tier and need a hyper nerf if they are to be used better.
