Okay, I finished it. I assume this is in response to a specific thing that happened recently. These folks are too classy to discuss that specific incident or even _mention_ it anywhere in the video. Since they don't mention it by name, I won't either. Instead, I'll say I love how you guys handled this. You're just filmmakers showing how _you_ stay safe on set, how easy it is, and how _great_ it can look. That's it. It's really respectful and classy. And I learned so much from this. Thanks for putting so much effort into it. If I weren't on a fixed income, I'd hop on Patreon but you'll have to settle for me sharing the video. lol. Awesome video, as always. Cheers, y'all. Everybody in the industry should be aware of the situation that made this relevant. In my opinion, with today's visual effects, there has not been a good reason for having live ammunition - and that includes blanks - and a functioning firearm anywhere near a film set for at least a decade.
@johnlynch2492
@johnlynch2492 2 года назад
@@daniel_wilkinson I think it comes down to the movie being made. For example, it isn't as easy to replicate the large bursts of smoke you see black powder cartridges in a western film. It is not as simple as adding a flash to a single frame in After Effects. Blanks can also add a lot of authenticity, which can be very important to films that need to be grounded in reality, such as a war film. That being said, real firearms should only be used if you have qualified professionals on set. Film armorers have been around since the dawn of movie making, and I don't think guns as a whole should be banned because of a knee-jerk reaction. If anything, there should be stricter and more uniform standards for who can be an armorer.

Very nice!! One thing I think could be added is, that prop guns cannot be easily identified by people walking by. There have been accidents where amateur moviemakers have filmed with prop guns outside and haven't informed the police beforehand. That may lead to very bad situations. As I said, people from the outside might not know that these are prop guns. What a great episode! So wonderful to have you back!!

Great techniques. Here are some we used in our John Wooyesque productions. 1. Airsoftrevolvers with shells. Like the Umarex replica of the enfield/webley revolver that run on co2. We put a small bit of talkum powder in each shell and when fired they give a great puff, that can be enhanced using a CG muzzleflash. 2. Another talkum powder trick we used was in a electric blowback mp5 with a silencer. Here we stuffed some powder in the otherwise empty silencer . Gives great full auto puffs when fired. Dont forget to clean your airsoft afterwards by the way.

You're BACK! YAY!!! I have used airsoft pistols in my own little productions, also with the modified magazine that allows dry firing. Flying shell casings and muzzle flashes and sound effects were never a problem to add in post, but we could never get the reactive lighting quite right. Wish I had known about slow LED strobes! I think they would have done the trick. BTW, one nice feature of gas blowback airsoft guns is that the slides can move slower than on real ones. Real semi-autos give you a blurry slide movement for one frame, while the particular airsofts we used can produce 2-3 frames of visible movement. This produced a nice, readable action on screen.

I love your content and this video. Great stuff. I do have one MAJOR recommendation though. You had a great opportunity to really hammer this home in the video, especially through your actions. You must treat all guns, BB, toys, or actual firearms as if they are all the same. You must follow the 6 simple rules at all times. #1 rule in gun safety is to act like every gun is loaded all the time, even if you personally unloaded and checked it multiple times. #2 rule is never put your finger on the trigger unless you are ready to fire in a safe direction. #3 rule is to keep the gun pointed in a safe direction at all times - don't point at anything you don't intend to destroy. #4 rule is to know your target and what is beyond your target. #5 any projectile that leaves the barrel of the gun while in your control is your complete and total responsibility (be it a bullet, a bb, or a nerf dart). #6 rule is the first 5 rules are always the most important at all times when around or handling any type of firearm (handgun, rifle, shotgun, toy, or prop). I mention this because, particularly in the last few minutes, you had the BB gun in your hand gesturing, finger on the trigger, and pointing it all over the place. I understand that it's a BB gun and that it probably wasn't loaded, but that is irrelevant. Finger discipline (finger off the trigger until ready to fire) and pointed in a safe direction are critical to avoid catastrophic incidents. BB guns have caused more injuries than are ever reported including total loss of eyes. Before all the critics chime in and say that I'm overreacting since it was for a film, it doesn't matter. Until the cameras are rolling, when you actually have to point the gun and put your finger on the trigger, you follow the rules. Yes, this may seem crazy, but even with something as harmless as a nerf gun! If you practice these safety rules all the time, everywhere, in every situation, the likelihood of an incident occurring is removed. Remember, anything that happens from a gun that was unintended is negligence. It's not an accident. There is no just thing as an accidental discharge of a firearm. It is a negligent discharge because the person with the firearm was not doing something correctly. Aside from that - keep up the great content!
@InCameraTV
@InCameraTV 2 года назад
You're absolutely right! Trigger discipline is not something many know about in the UK, perhaps because we don't have 'real' firearms generally available here. The BB gun was indeed not loaded with BBs or a Co2 cannister. But rest assured Tommy has received a severe wrist slapping. And thanks for posting those rules! 👍

You can also use something like the Red Komodo for action sequences since it has a global shutter that still doesn't lower the DR as much as other global shutter cameras. Then you don't have to worry about rolling shutter issues but still get a really good image quality.

Tip for the microphone for the strobe. Just get yourself an electret microphone for 50p and a nice opamp like an lm324 or Ic741 and a resistor of 1K and a trimmer pit of 1K and a 10uF decoupling capacitor and just run that behind the actual mic or the lamp and you have a very tiny circuit (especially if you do it SMD) for about 5quid total that can be dialed in for the sound level you need. And you can even go nuts by adding a high impendence buffer (single transistor or another opamp) and add an RC low pass to that to also narrow the frequency to what to trigger to. (Or even a band pass). But just doing the amplification circuit will already make the strobe far more sensitive. And if you want to go wireless then you can do that too with a similar setup and a little ESP32 as a wifi transmitter and one on the lamp as a receiver. And just trigger the lamp on a message.

On the airsoft..... Tokyo Marui (likes yours is, I believe I have the identical thingy) airsoft pistols have a slide lock feature under the frame, big silver slide. Not on the real weapon. See it a lot in films and TV and, least for me, instantly says this weapon is not going to be fired. Or, at least, the flash bangs and possibly wallops are going to be CG. Tends to kick me in the verisimil.... very simile, virtuous simian.... realistics. Easy to fix with a short length of electricians tape. Also hides the seam. Might not be a top tip, but a tip nonetheless.

Considering the budget this isn't that far off from Hollywood production values and I absolutely couldn't tell that the gun shoots weren't real. Well done. I do wonder though in using realistic looking prop guns that if a real gun somehow did make its way on set that it could go undetected around all the other props.

Potentially, and that's why any production requiring weaponry (real or fake) must have an armourer, who's sole job is to make sure all such props are accounted for and under their express control.

FYI putting anything soft like your hand near the cylinder barrel gap on a revolver will injure you. Try the FBI grip next time.
