Slash is one of my favorite guitarist of all time. He is a beast. So soulful in his playing. Yes Slash is playing the lead guitar in the song. Such a classic song.
Mine too. He played this I think he called it "Irish riff" and then the song was written. Not sure why slash would dislike his own guitar baby but I have always loved it
If I remember correctly I believe he hated playing it because if he deviated on the solo at all the crowd would be pissed. Most musicians like to riff on their own stuff live and this one was either play it straight or bomb. He just got tired of it, I think.
Funny how this song became a major hit for GnR when Slash has said the staple beginning lick was nothing but him noodling around doing finger exercises and making a circus type sound.

This song's beginning guitar part was briefly sampled in the late 80s by a rap group named 2 Live Crew. It's at the beginning of The F**k Shop. I used to love that song as a teen back in the day.

As much as I love about Guns n Roses, Slash is by far the biggest reason I still play them from time to time. At 55 years old right now, he's still better than 99% of the guitarist out there. You should check out some of Slash's new stuff, featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators. Myles Kennedy has the voice to give it that Axl Rose feel, not exactly the same, but a close feeling.
This song was written for Erin Everly- a much younger girl married to Axel, she & Axel were going to be parents and she lost the baby & everything spiraled down after that.

The guitar riff that opens the song is based on a guitar aerobics exercise Slash was doing. The guitar melody that opens the song almost sounds like a circus calliope.
Slash stated in an interview that the opening riff was actually a joke. If you listen closely it's something you'll hear at the circus. I guess he was messing around on the guitar playing it then Axl heard it and it stuck.
