New to the channel, I’m a fellow homesteader and RU-vidr. I have 2 AR15 rifles for the homestead chambered in 7.62x39 which I agree is more useful than 556 on a homestead. A shotgun is definitely the gun to have on a homestead if you could only have one gun. I like Remington 870’s as they are indestructible and have stood the test of time. I dispatch my cattle with Sabot slugs. I also run lights on my homestead guns. I think that is crucial. Great content, I know how time consuming these videos are to make so thank you for your time.

no, a 30 AK rd iis not more useful than a silenced, shorty AR in 223 with a 22lr conversion unit, scope option, trigger job, anti-cant bubble-level and either 60 gr softpoints Nosler Partitions, or 69 gr hpbt match ammo. Zero the scope at 250m with the hps, and the "long range' wing of the peep sight at 175m with the softpoints. alter the luminous "normal range' sight wing to be a 'v-notch" and shape the "wings' out of Brownell's Acragslass fiberglass epoxy. File this sight to zero at 50m with 60 gr Aquila subsonic 22's.

That’s what I can’t stand!! People who criticize what someone else shoots. From the gun to the ammo used so many people talk down on people for using certain guns/brands or ammo. As long as it doesn’t jam and you can hit your target it shouldn’t matter what you use. Great video and wonderful information.

It wasn’t that pretty when I got it. I stripped the finish, steamed out a ton of dents, sanded it down, and then refinished it. The bluing is still rough with some pitting in spots, but it shoots great.

Living in the country for over 40 yrs., I have acquired what I believe to be necessary for my use. Granted, I did not get them all at the same time. I acquired them over years. The first thing I bought was a semi-auto .22 rifle. It has probably been used more than any other firearm I own. Next was a .12 ga. pump shotgun and a .357 magnum revolver. Then I got a high powered bolt action rifle. All of these were purchased in the 70's and 80's and are still in use today. Later, I acquired a Ruger Mini-14. Thus, I have what's needed for self defense, predators, and deer hunting on and around the homestead.

:) ... I picked up a new Henry Homesteader 9 mm semi-automatic carbine riffle this spring. I already have two 9 mm semi automatic pistols, so I have plenty of ammo for the carbine. With a Sig Romeo 5 red dot mounted on the gun, I easily acquire the target 50 yards away. As Henry says, "From Bed Post to Fence Post - What’s Yours Remains Yours."
@internationalshito-ryufede9438
My property ran onto unincorporated county land. When I moved onto the property I owned a pistol. After coming eye to eye with a cougar and a wolf I added a lever action .357. I guess it depends where you homestead.

Something to think about is setting up a range on your property so that it is as convenient as possible to remain proficient with your gear. Also the homesteader has the advantage of "accidental hunting". If you carry a handgun appropriate for the game seasons that are open you are prepared when a target of opportunity arises. Mending fences might provide serendipitous Hasenpfeffer. 😇

We own guns. Our children and grandchildren all took hunter safety course, even the girls! I have never shot an animal, because there was never a need for me to do so. I plan on raising chickens and my grandmother raised them by the hundreds. I have help to pluck and can cut up a chicken, but never killed one YET. I am looking for a chicken butchering class close to Nashville, TN because if we raise chickens I will be raising them for meat, eggs, bug control and chicken poop for composting. Every tool can be used and depending on how it is used makes the difference, not the tool. People tend to forget that cars in the wrong hands kill people every day, just like guns. It's not the car or the gun that is the problem. The problem is the person using them. God bless you'll and keep growing.

Hi Jack. I gotta say up front I am not a gun person. I've never owned one. Only shot a 357 mag. One time hit my target and then it was taken away from me, lol. I shot a 22 rifle once too. But not even sure if I hit anything with it. That being said I really found this video informational and helpful. I am hoping to purchase land to make my own Homestead in the next year or so. And I know, while I don't really want to have a gun near me (all the time) that I will have to "have" one near me and possibly carry one while building and running my homestead (because I don't want to get bit by a snake for sure, or anything else). So thank you for making this video. I think when I look into purchasing a gun it'll probably be the 9mm for ease of handling and carrying. (And I'll definitely get one of those olites once I get one. ) So thanks again. I hope you and Jackie are having a great day.

You may want to look at revolvers if your concern is snakes as there is actually snake shot ammunition, they just do not cycle in a semi automatic

Your lucky to live in a free state like New Hampshire where it's a constitutional carry state as opposed to a nanny state like NY (where i live) in fact, Google which states offer the most freedoms : New Hampshire usually comes in first or second, but what doesn't change is that New York always comes in dead last at number 50!

I agree with you assessment that if you could only have one firearm on a homestead it should be a shotgun. A shotgun can cover many roles/uses. Until I was in my 20s, my Dad owned only two firearms: a Remington 870 in 12 gauge and a Remington 552 semiauto .22 long rifle. Those were all he needed. If I had to divest my collection and only own what I consider the bare minimum, I would have my Ruger 77 all weather in 30-06 (my go to hunting rifle for 25 years), Remington 1100 in 12 gauge, Ruger 10/22, and HK VP9. I could take care of about anything I expect to face with those 4. Luckily I don't have to make such a drastic move! Guns in the hands of responsible people are tools.

because I made the cans, bought the guns used and did the gunsmithing, I really only have $2500 in the set up, but the torch, lathe, etc, cost almost 2k and the time and expense of learning what I know is probably another 10k! :-) But I have that gear and I know what I know and if push comes to shove, I can make money with that gear and knowledge and help send a whole bunch of pos;s where they need to go, too. I"m much happier with that than with a new truck,, but most people are sheep.

Our firearms are in my mind the least important part of independent living. I put far more effort into food sustainability, water sources, heat and energy availability and medical preparedness. With that said, we’re definitely armed. The only thing I keep truly handy is a 9mm pistol and a Henry 44 lever action as we have coyotes and other predators.

Is that laser considered "point of aim, point of impact" many times optics and lasers, if they are not at the same level need to have drop or rise figured into them. Only way to verify is to either put a laser cartridge in or shoot from a rest to be 100% sure
@TheMindfulHomestead
@TheMindfulHomestead Год назад
I’ve got the laser zeroed at about 40 yards. With 9mm ballistics, that equates to about an inch high at point blank range (ie the “height over bore” you mentioned) and about an inch low at 50 yards. Both are totally usable for dispatching a problematic raccoon. The laser has adjustments on it for zeroing it in to whatever application you are using. That CZ has a very low bore axis compared to pistols like a Glock, M&P, or 1911, so the height over bore issue isn’t a big one, but it should always be zeroed in on your specific handgun.

yes, I've got $6000 in 3 guns, but I drive a $2000 minivan, so who's wasting money, me or the guy with th e $60,000 truck, charging him 8% interest on the truck loan, along with full coverage insurance? In 10 years, that truck will be worth $6000, if you treat it well and you'll have paid an extra $1000 per year on it for the first 5 years, for that insurance and interest.so youll have lost 60k and I'll still have my guns, in the same condition and theyll be worth MORE (due to inflation) Vehicles are not fun to me, especially not trucks) and I have no need of towing or hauling much of anything. The guns are FUN, and might even feed you or save your life. So it's all in what you do with your gear. If you make your living with that truck, you really should get a $10,00 used one nad avoid the interest payment and full coverage insurance. Same utility with the truck, but save 50k.

@TheMindfulHomestead
@TheMindfulHomestead Год назад
They are lightweight, so easy for men and women alike to handle. They aren’t prone to jamming, so they work when you need them to. They are inexpensive, so there isn’t a huge financial burden for a farmer to bear. They fire a relatively small cartridge that works for predator control of small animals, up to deer sized targets (though admittedly it’s underpowered for most hunting). They perform well in most situations including predator control, mid size game hunting, and self defense. There isn’t another weapon out there that does as well as an AR15 at performing a multitude f different tasks on a small farm or homestead.
