Gunstars always reminded me of a Huey Cobra or Apache attack helicopter gunship. With the pilot in the rear cockpit and the gunner in the front. I could see it with powerful particle beam and phaser weapons to take out capital ships as well as a full compliment of missiles/torpedoes. I always digged the way the Gunstars vertically takeoff like a ballistic missile.

The plan worked because they waited for the Armada to pass, then took out the communications turret. Apparently they had a very centralized command and control. The fighters were essentially blind when he attacked.
@nbsmith100

deathblossom is mostly a detector, control, and thruster array hardwired into a computer program that reacts to the environment. the weapons that are used are just what the ship already has. also to note in the comparison line up is while the gunstar is maneuverable, it has 360 sphere weapon coverage, which only the star trek craft come close to having.
@rickygillingham4794

The deathblosom fires all.wepons all at once why spinning the ship hitting all incoming attacking vessels...the ship will use all available power and will need time to recharge leaving its self vulnerable to be used as last resort.

IIRC, the video game that the kid plays shows him firing all the weapons, and I don't think the recruiter knew about the prototype Gunstar, so I think they all have the lasers, particle beams, and missiles. I like how the ship has all these fields of fire available - the gunner can fire in almost every direction, while the pilot simply worries about avoiding enemy fire. This is one of my favorite fighters!

And they fired the missiles straight ahead and they turned around and came back to hit the targets. Pretty cool seeking missiles.

Modern day Eurofighter Typhoon has that capability. HMD enables pilot to lock on targets outside of the front radar cone (when using IIR/HEAT seeking missiles like AIM-9M, AIM-9X or ASRAAM). Not sure of F-22 Raptor and F-35 lightning II, though.

The design for the gunstar and the starfury from b5 are similar
@benrussell-gough1201
@benrussell-gough1201 6 лет назад
The thing to remember about the Gunstar is that it straddles the line between heavy fighter and patrol ship. It is clearly designed for long-duration patrols along the defensive line of the Frontier. So, a good close comparison would be with an Al'Kesh or a military-rigged Corellian YT2000 - Shipping lane patrol rather than point interception. The particle beams might be the main anti-ship and attack weapons but I suspect that the Star League's general pacifistic philosophy means that the Gunstar is optimised for defensive engagements rather than attack.
@lawrencedoliveiro9104
@lawrencedoliveiro9104 4 года назад
I doubt it’s “long-duration” ... you don’t want to be cooped up in those seats for weeks on end. You’d want a cabin where you can walk around and lie down and stuff. And a toilet.

The guy on the bottom did you pay attention when you watched the movie. The Gunstar with death blossom was a prototype. It had armor plating so it could take hits. It also had a FTL drive. They took out the command ships communication array that relayed to the fighter fleet where the enemy would be. The enemy fighters could only see the Gunstar if they had a direct line of sight.
@uosdwiSrdewoH
@uosdwiSrdewoH Год назад
My thoughts exactly. It's a 30+ minute video purporting to talk about the Gunstar and the guy at the bottom has kind of seen the movie once when he was bored. This video is a colossal waste of time for anyone who was actually hoping to hear two people talking about one of the coolest ships in cinema history. Instead we have one guy forever having to correct the other because he couldn't even be bothered to watch the movie he knew he'd have to talk about. This would've been a great opportunity to get a new subscriber as I sub to everything that has a good first video. If this is the kind of half assed crap this channel normally puts out I doubt I'll even get through this one let alone come back.

4:27 There was nobody else doing CG of that quality in the mid-1980s. It took them a Cray X/MP supercomputer to render the images. That gobbled up a third of the budget of the movie (for a third of the final running time). You wouldn’t see anything to match that quality until something close to 10 years later, when high-powered Unix workstations had become a bit more common.

The CG in this movie was state-of-the-art. You can do things in CG that you can't do in miniatures. One of the reasons why we saw more dogfights and maneuvering in DS9 and B5 than we see in BSG:TOS or TNG. They were actually contemplating using CG for Star Wars originally, but computers weren't good enough yet. Starfighter needed a Cray XMP supercomputer, the size of a small car. Now, my cellphone can do it in realtime.

Greetings Starfighter! You have been recruited by the star league to defend the frontier against Xur and the Kodan Armada. Incredible how when the movie was made in 1983-1984, no consumer grade computers (including coin-op arcade games) could've hoped to achieve the graphics seen in the movie arcade machine, and now a game console could run the actual movie graphics without much effort. The remote turrets are much older invention than the helmet-aimed Apache gun though, it was used with an aiming device, quite like the gimballing chair, in the later WW2 airplanes, like Me-210/410 and B-29.

The Space Vampire ship from Lifeforce would be a cool ship to do something on as it was one of the best things about the film. The ship had a very macabre vibe about it and the sheer scale of the stuff done to realise the vessel is stunning. A couple things: 1) Grig is the pilot, not the navigator, he is directing the GS through the enemy ships and into locations for Alex to shoot bad guys, 2) Alex's seat and targeting system is connected to ALL of the turrets and weapons so that he has 360-degree firing capability - all he's doing is shooting. The Death Blossom is a system that links the weapons to the sensors and depletes the weapon stores on any target within range. Had the Rylan Gunstar Fleet survived to defend along with Alex, then they would probably not have had to use the DB. Also, they use it in the end, because although Alex is amazing, he is still just a lone GS against the remaining armada (sans centralized control from the Ko-Dan Mothership, which also gives him an advantage) and so the use of the DB is a last-ditch effort to win and even then Alex has to keep the GS alive long enough for the Ko-Dan fighters to ALL be within range of the DB! Alex is absolutely the chosen one! Vs a Viper, the Gunstar pilot would begin maneuvering to avoid taking fire while the Gunstar gunner would begin rotating to keep the Viper in the crosshairs regardless of where, in relation to the Gunstar's direction of travel. The Viper would be wiped out within seconds just as Ko-Dan Fighters are. Great show! I enjoyed this one!

I was fascinated by the design of the gunstar! Semi rounded for good maneuverability, but remember the armada was on visual contact making the attack as having the element of surprise and Grigg chose a good attack angle where many could be hired in the first pass before a different scrambling pattern was used by the armada. The improvements were necessary for this gunstar to have a chance against tough odds, and death blossom is an awesome weapon to watch and patience was needed to get the whole armada within it's range! Great movie and story line, and how the gunstar took out the base ship too!

The awkward part about the Gunstar verses the Viper or the Star Fury is both of the latter have forward mounted guns alone. The Gun star might want to point the main forward heavy guns towards the enemy however this isn't needed. The Fury and the Starfury "have" to commit to a vector before turning the ship and firing on an enemy where they are going in a straight line, the Gun star can hit you with the main guns swing around for another pass all the while its secondary and tertiary weapons are pelting you while its maneuvering for this next shot. Missiles being on the secondary menu. If the gun star could see you, the gunstar could hit you is pretty much how this worked, and the pilot kept the gunner in killing range. The problem with the invasion of the armada is "here's your golden fly swatter, because of stupid reasons beyond our control you're the only one with a golden fly swatter, now go hit that hornet's nest. If things go bad here's a bug bomb but you have to REALLY PISS THEM OFF and get them all on you close without well dying in the first place. "

5:40 it also had "deflector plating so it can take several direct hits". So it has death blossom and heavy armor, making it a heavy fighter. I woulds say the gunner position reminds me more of a B-17/B-24 belly gunners turret, larger obviously, but that seems to be where they got the idea. 12:48 I think Vipers are small because they are short range fighters, like the British Spitfires, they dont have long range. 17:24 Those are rear weapons, the chair rotates 360 and you can see Alex shoot behind the ship in a few scenes

@MrSheckstr
@MrSheckstr 7 лет назад
Karel Mclean I think part of the problem is they are basing the scale on the cockpit size of the Work Bee but forgot that the cockpit (for at least the gunner) would also have the added bulk of the Three axis 360 degree motion apparatus AND some sort of service corridor to aft end of the ship .... Once you start fitting all that extra stuff in and the fuselage goes from being the diameter of a Apache helicopter and starts being closer in diameter to the front end of a DC 8. The error is in the size of the chair and pilot when view through the canopy from the outside. And that because the pilot would be barely visible on a full ship image
@scottthewaterwarrior

I always wanted them to do a sequal where they used modern CGI for the "real life" space scenes but the "real life" CGI from the original film for the videogame part. Plot would be Alex's brother beats the new Starfighter game and becomes a pilot. He would be flying a new generation of extremely nimble and fast single man fighters, so not only would there be a sibling rivalry thing going on, but also a bit of old vs. new too.

Actually I think the Starfury's are a little more maneuverable; the damn things could turn on a dime. The problem is that the Gunstar's weapons rotate, and only the Startfleet vessels are even remotely comparable when is come to that ability. All the other ships have to turn to hit their target, which of course is mitigated by their existing maneuverability, however in this case that doesn't mean much when offset by the fact that the Gunstar is considerably more maneuverable then them.

I don't know. Paul Reubens did a fantastic job, and I don't think it can be topped. As well the music really makes the movie iconic. The tween music of our current generation doesn't really have much to offer as well. It would be a hard project to live up to. Kinda like Ghost Busters. Maybe a remaster, Paul Reubens is just is one of those really hard to replace voices. Like Gilbert Gottfried, or Robin Williams.

As for the ship, a Couple thoughts. Max (The ship) might have a minor vindictive mood towards humans, It's obvious the ship has the best inertial dampeners. The little zoo Max had packed in the side wall was practically untouched. while David was tossed around his seat during some crazy stop, and go maneuvers, At times max chortled at him, it certainly seemed to improve Max's mood to see David tossed about. The ship went from 0 to way more than 40,000 KPH (25k MPH (The speed needed to escape Earth's Gravity into space.) In the blink of an eye. And stopped just as fast. If the ship didn't have crazy Inertial Dampeners then David would have been a mess to clean off the walls. So I think Max was controlling the Inertial force in the cabin letting it just be enough to toss Max around in his chair. And getting a kick out of it. Or maybe I'm reading to much into Max. Couple other thoughts, Is it bigger on the inside? The giant eye in the zoo on the wall suggests the ship had limited extra dimensions to it. Liquid Metal a state of matter. The Scientist could not cut into the hull. The ship could alter it's shape making it less wind resistant. The door, and steps were made to order. The Internal cabin could rearrange it's components, assembling seats, and Engine components as needed. Which came from where? Suggesting extra dimensional space. Or at least some matter energy conversion. Gravity a suggestion? It seems like the ship used Gravity, or inertia manipulation as thrust. The scene underwater was almost like the ship pushed off, While at times it seems like the ship is pushing with an unseen force when it accelerates. The ship never needs to land it just hovers, Even the steps up into the cabin hover. To sophisticated for it's own good? Distracted by flowers, the ship flew into an electric pylon, zapped itself unconscious, And when it woke up. It was missing a few important memories. like how to get home. Sounds fishy, And it even seems more odd that the Phaelons just happened to have left the necessary navigational data in Davids head. It makes me wonder if it was an experiment to see how David would cope with Max. David, and Max are like mice in a Maze. The Phaelons sure seem to like science experiments!

Leo A remastered version for this and even Starfighter would be in order. However, I feel the animation in this has held up decently. And spot on about Reubens

Gunstar takes Viper for one, and only one, reason. Most of the Gunstar's weapons are turret-mounted and can fire at the Viper even if the Viper gets in behind it. If the Gunstar had all it's weapons fixed forward the Viper would eat it for lunch.

You seem to overlook that the whole point of the movie was they had to destroy the communications turret on the codan ship. The turret allowed all the codan fighters to act in unison. The Gunstar only beat them because they were in disarray, being piloted manually.

4:50 If you look at the terrain for example, apparently the original plan called for them to be modelled with fractal geometry. But they couldn’t render that much geometry in time. So in the end they went with simpler geometry with patterning on them.

They had to play Hide and Seek. Get behind the fighter wings and take out the comm tower. After DB they were without power. They had to hotwire the Gunstar to attack the Mothership.

The game alex played and beat was designed to simulate the kodan invasion fleet. So he might have been very good at dealing with this invasion but he will need more training in the future. Especially in squad combat. In terms of dog fight ability, the GunStar has one person dedicated to just the weapons array. This does give it a very handy advantage in any combat scenario. Star Treks ships require a bit of time to prep energy weapons and even torpedos, the basically need to tell a computer what to do then the computer does it. The gun star is similar to a Apache helicopter, the guns are all manual. This makes the GunStar a much faster shooter and does not require the pilot line up the ship in order to shoot. The only ship that might beat the GunStar is the Runabout, depending on if the GunStar gets first shot and if the Gunstars weapons can get past the Runabouts shields.

The fact that this specific ship was an experimental one explains some of the power issues on board. The fact that this is suppose to be in a fleet would also explain the quick energy depletion during the battle before death blossom. The Gunstar uses what looks like a missile conveyor that is fully exposed to fire all missiles in death blossom. The experimental title fits this ship because in a fleet death blossom could be dangerous to your fighters as well due to the firing around at random all around the ship. The standard gunstar does have three weapon systems on the standard ship and one was not used. So the production version of the experimental variant would probably have a auto targeting system that targets all enemy fighters in range before death blossom. They would go after the mass formations of fighters or breakup fleet formations for the standard to use their heavy weapons on the larger ships. The targeting automated targeting system would also draw a lot of power so you still need the gunner so the system can be saved for death blossom. The gunstar is definitely a large fighter but its laser turrets are all over the ship combined with how maneuverable it is any other fighter would have trouble surprising it at any angle. Think of a B-17 that moves like a fighter.

The Gunstar always has looked like a chunky beast of a space fighter. Remarkably fast and maneuverable for its size, but still, a beast. That said, I was pretty surprised to see how similar it is in size to the Runabout. The Viper is shockingly small for how primitive the rest of BSG tech is.

26:00 You are right that the rear pilot cockpit could be higher, but the reason they put it at the same level was for filming purposes - so that when during conversation the camera angle could capture both of them in the same shot easily. You can tell this is so from the press photos. E.g. s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d0/02/2c/d0022cc9277ee38072bdfccc4d19e7fa.jpg

Everyone's combat fighters in modern times carry missiles and bombs snugged up against conformable and wing fuel tanks. And the Gunstar gunner has turrets in every direction so he can fire anywhere (and his hud gives target tracking even when blocked by the Gunstar's hull)

You guys should read up on the production, because it's untrue that all the lighting was flat. Some shots were actually ray-traced but others were not due to time-to-render constraints.

It is possible that the pilot might be able to slave the guns to his helmet too if only as some sort of back up or for training purposes. I got the impression that the gunner is given a virtual "Xenon Mist" display and when he is orientated downwards (pointing at the floor) he can still see the targets as virtual objects and the turrets can fire in most arcs. where as when he's looking 'up' he can see the physical ships too - but obviously space combat often takes place at quite extreme distances - so the enhanced display makes more sense that just looking out the window would. But the way it's shot seems to suggest he mostly stays right side up with only some pivoting and dipping and the ship moves in part so he isn't jogged in his aim as the ship jinks. I notice the ship has a small nod to Tie Fighters with the solar panels on the wings and also it's a very likely influence on Babylon 5 as it has the vernier thrusters all over the front of the engines to move the ship around in a starfury like manner in theory at least. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nmPGuMGs8cg.html So it seems handling wise it has a fair bit in common with a NuBSG Viper as it has that sort of aircraft like handling normally but then it can also dodge up/down and reverse itself relative to it's direction of travel if it needs to - something X-wings or Star Wars Ships never do. (Though I think The Starviper class ; Virago Starfighter was supposed to be able to do that). Now there is one for you to cover one day... dead obscure but a rather pretty looking fighter. starwars.wikia.com/wiki/StarViper-class_attack_platform
