Here is the fifth guppy cross in our breeding project towards fixing a white guppy color strain. This begins our first set of backcrosses using the offspring from our original four females. We are slowly making progress towards understanding how to fix a single-color trait and strain.
Our starting male has an all-white phenotype (platinum White/snow white/white moscow strain), can we restore this trait through multiple generations by starting with only females that don’t have this trait? In this fifth cross (first backcross), all the offspring were blond-based and had some white guppies showing up!

Now this is quality fish content. Very excited to see where this goes. Wish i had enough tanks to teplicate the experiment myself.

Very ,very nice series.Cannot wait for the next video. I have white platinum guppies to. They do breed true ,but they predate allot on their fry released.

Thank you! I run into adults predating on the fry as well. I try giving them as much cover as I can to overcome that.

I believe the gene that is modifying the blue and red genes is called Stoerzbach, Alan bias also talks about and works with this gene
@IvansGuppies
@IvansGuppies 8 месяцев назад
I think you are right! It goes by metallicus as well. To avoid pronouncing Stoerzbach wrong, I just went with mentioning metallicus as the other potential gene that could be involved.

This is probably the best guppy breeding series iv ever watched, the way you predict is awesome i have downloaded the same table but i cant understand or predict anything , can u maybe make a video on what colours/traits are dom/recessive or x/y linked? so we have a better understanding and can predict the fry too?
@IvansGuppies
@IvansGuppies 8 месяцев назад
Thank you and Im glad you are enjoying the series! Making a video on that is a good idea but it would take a lot of time and research. I am still learning and Im limiting myself to just the genes Im seeing in my guppies. Otherwise it just gets a bit overwhelming. As far as looking at that reference table, there are parts of it that confuse me too. Colum E should tell you how the gene is inherited. Not every gene is controlled by just dominant or recessive and can involve several interacting genes. But if it says autosomal dominant. That means its dominant and not sex linked. Some genes are still unknown. If it says X or Y, that should mean it is sex linked somehow.
@AgasthyaMaramraj
@AgasthyaMaramraj 8 месяцев назад
@@IvansGuppies definitely! I could see them and try to understand the basics of the colours like for example the different colours are x/y linked some of them autosomal dominant too but it would take a very long time and by the time i understand it i would have ton of babies and I can just see them directly 😂 Ps. Make more I love the series and also is back crossing/linebreeding all the terms linked to guppy inbreeding is it okay for them to inbreed for a couple of generations? The OG female has a little bit of a very very slight hunchback and only of the female fry inherited it , it's not life threatening but it's just something which might increase because of inbreeding
@IvansGuppies
@IvansGuppies 8 месяцев назад
Im working on the next video. Yes, backcrossing and linebreeding both involve inbreeding. It is a very common technique to fix a trait. It has drawbacks just like you are saying. After several generation, new blood will need to be introduced which can be done strategically. Im looking out for deformities. Luckily, I have not encountered many so far. I remove them from the project when they occur.

loving the videos, i have put in bunch of mixed guppies i have the typical fancies but theyre the exotic variety , i have snakeskin, dumbo ear males and i have added the females from my previous fry carrying a HBB type gene which looks purple and some even have spots of red on them but mostly look like TYPE 4 OF UR FEMALE GUPPY , i have put them all in a tank even the male counterparts of the fry and their mother too... as iv bought many new males and also a blonde red female iv seen a lot of mating action going on and im excited to see the babies , i wonder what colour they all will be

im trying to eliminate the dark vibe i want brighter colours this time iv seen that fry carrying black gene have black tails since the day theyre born. all the females look like TYPE 4 of urs i hope they dont inherit much of black coz of the bright males
@IvansGuppies
@IvansGuppies 8 месяцев назад
Interesting project! It looks like you will have a lot going on! As long as you are very strict about separating any dark colored guppies from the rest of your colony, in time, you should start seeing brighter colors. It may take many many months or longer. So be prepared for that but it is for sure doable if you are strict about it.
@AgasthyaMaramraj
@AgasthyaMaramraj 8 месяцев назад
@@IvansGuppies i do want to seperate the dark coloured fry but its only possible if they show some early signs of being black like maybe body or tail. Are there any cues of fry being 100% dark? any cues with your TYPE 4 guppy fry? i do like the fry tho. Once the fry grow and then i see that theyre dark it would be too late to humanely cull them and i have to keep them which would not be a success. Is it true that the black guppies have the blackish tail since theyre born? i did see them during HBB cross. I definitely have a shortage of tanks so relying on luck and early detection here.
@IvansGuppies
@IvansGuppies 8 месяцев назад
There are some clues. If the fry are dark then it is a good indication that they inherited that trait. I would still get a small second tank or container just for them and find someone that can take them. Local Facebook groups are really good for that sort of thing. If you cant find someone to take them, a local fish store might take them as a donation. You might be able to trade with them too.
@AgasthyaMaramraj
@AgasthyaMaramraj 8 месяцев назад
@@IvansGuppies all of my fish except a couple are grey based so it's going to be hard to detect but fun. The donation idea is pretty nice I can definitely do that and give them to my LFS. Waiting for the new video!

I agree with your confusion about ectopic melanophores, it doesn’t specify which parts of the body the spots are removed. Also, what are the codominant genes and what are their affects on color and pattern? Also, the red that we’re seeing is phenotypically red, but is the genotype also red? e.g. a white phenotype chicken but its genotype is really silver (which affects red pigment, and a completely different gene from white which affects black pigment). Great Video!!
@IvansGuppies
@IvansGuppies 8 месяцев назад
To be honest, I am not entirely sure. I have not looked at red genes too deeply. What I've gathered in the past is that there are several genes controlling red pigment and its rather complicated. As far as codominant genes, skimming Bias's gene chart shows there are several. It doesn't seem like any codominant genes are involved here with my project. However, I've seen articles suggesting that the magenta gene might behave differently in the heterozygous versus homozygous state suggesting incompletely dominant. But I cant say for sure. Currently, I think the genes that are involved in my project are red pigment modifiers. Specifically magenta, storzbach and blau. So the white color is a consequence of those genes being present. We will see.
