Gustaph won Belgium’s Eurosong 2023 competition with ‘Because Of You’ and will represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool on 9, 11 & 13 May. This performance is from Eurosong 2023, courtesy of VRT.
Gustaph wrote his first song when he was only seven years old. At the age of nineteen he scored a hit with his first single ‘Gonna Lose You’, a song that he produced and wrote himself.
His soulful voice is popular both nationally and internationally. For six years he sang with the band Hercules & Love Affair, which had a worldwide hit in 2006 with 'Blind'. And Gustaph also has experience when it comes to the big Eurovision stage. As a backing singer, he has already participated in the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 2018 in Lisbon with Sennek and in 2021 in Rotterdam with Hooverphonic, where he was also Geike Arnaert’s voice coach.
For the past year he has been working on his own material. Gustaph believes his catchy new songs are perfect for the Eurovision Song Contest - and this time not as backing, but right there in the foreground, in the spotlight.

@@hehedutch It was mainly underrated by the fandom around the time of the NF, literally all of them were backing Chérine while many of the same polls had Gustaph last. After he won, he got heckled at the Barcelona pre-party by "fans" chanting Chérine's name. I guess you could say he was the Sam Ryder of this year because he kept a positive attitude during the whole experience, and in the end he proved all the doubters wrong by giving Belgium its first top 10 since 2017

A lot of people compare this song with Israel last year. There is a big difference. Last year was gay all the way, what is not a bad thing. I’m gay myself. So is Gustaph. But this represents 80’s, 90’s, house, the voging culture, even gospel. The singer from Israel was also full of himself. Gustaph is a sweet guy with his feet on the ground just trying to do his best. Well sometimes is all about fun... Sometime countries try too hard to be genuine and we loose the fun factor ... Gustaph is playful , the girls on fire with great vocals.... The song is cheesy in a good way and quickly puts a smile on you and make you groove on your seat.... Sometimes this is enough to do it well in 3 minutes with no distractions etc... Agree. Moldova 2021 and Serbia 2015 come to mind as well. Both rather generic and retro songs with low odds beforehand but they were definitely charismatic crowd pleasers. He should go all in with the Paris is Burning theme and just have a party there instead of thinking of ending up in the top 10. Enjoyment pays off eventuality

The HUGE difference was the language and the Modovian song was some kind of folk, while this is dated dance combined with a gospel sound. There is no chance that Belgium will end up that high. You can be extremely happy if you qualify but you will surely not end up in the top 20.

I believe that everyone's so quick to judge this guy just bc their faves didnt win when we don't even know what's he truly capable of on stage. Remember when people were excited about Albania's entry last year? Or Cyprus'? (ngl, myself included) and then 'Ela' ended up being a huge disappointment live.
