The tragedy is that, as in Romeo and Juliet (and I think of this Shakespeare tragedy when I hear Mahler's Sixth) that a cheap "happily-ever-after" ending always seems possible until the hammer comes down. Then nothing else is possible.

Powerful stuff indeed! Well executed by that hammer player & that triangle falling lol! Gustav Mahler's symphonies are certainly powerful & worth a listen & I know Mahler's music is not everybody's cup of tea as some find it somewhat discordant & long winded but his skillful orchestration is something else. My favourite Mahler symphony is his 8th symphony, the 'Symphony of a Thousand' which is just awesome to hear!

For all his antics in his symphonies, I find Mahler long-winded, depressing and boring. I don't think there was a day in Gustav's life where he wasn't mad at an orchestra or unhappy. And who names their kid Gustav anyways.

You're not alone. Many feel that way; they just don't hang out at Mahler videos commenting. Ironically (check out the Wikipedia article about Sym #6), Mahler *was very happy* when he was writing this symphony. I used to like most of his symphonies a lot better than I do now, but I still love his 6th symphony. And the 1st. Sure the 6th is depressing. So is life, sometimes. But to me, the 6th is never boring.
@alexpetersen4403
@alexpetersen4403 11 месяцев назад
Depressing music has a place, but some of his symphonies are also triumphant and beautiful. Urlicht and Finale from his second symphony are brilliant, shining moments that wouldn’t be the same if there weren’t the first movements to bring you down a bit
