An overview of the amazing life of Gustav Stickley, an inspiring genius and reckless businessman who changed design and architecture. He brought us out of the Victorian style and still evokes inspiration today 100+ years later. In a very brief period of time, he changed how we think about homes.

Great to hear your realistic admiration for Stickley. He ended up a has-been, but most of us are never-were's.

We love this style - spent 30 years north of Chicago remodeling our 1957 Cape Cod into a Craftsman style home including 1/4 sawn oak floors, Cherry inset cabinetry, Stickley furniture, Rookwood pottery, and FLW style rugs. Sold it last year for 30K over asking and moved to Florida to retire. Stickley wrote: "The word that is best loved in the language of every nation is home, for when a man's home is born out of his heart and developed through his labor and perfected through his sense of beauty, it is the very cornerstone of his life."

Hard to believe Stickley’s period of success was so brief.

@@BrentHull so short, but yet I have newer Stickley furniture in my house. His legacy lives on...and the quality is still great.

I don’t know about that. I’m sitting in a house filled with Stickley furniture. His influence continues.

The architect Harvey Ellis also had a close association with Stickley and made great contributions to this style.

Agreed. I think Harvey needs his own video. Thanks!

What a complex character. A little bit of everything - brilliant but a fool in some ways. From what I’ve read, he took influences from a lot of places including his visits to the UK and developed them into his own ideas. It’s a great shame that his flame didn’t burn for longer but what a legacy from a relatively short few years.

Thanks, I agree. A brilliant flash that died too quickly.

Interesting talk, but FILLED with inaccuracies. A little knowledge can be dangerous. His firm designed over 220 different homes and offered the plans through his The Craftsman magazine and these homes influenced home construction and catalog books. The examples he shows are NOT Stickley designs.

Stickley was not an architect and did not design homes. His speciality was interiors and furniture.

His firm designed well over 250 homes across the US and Canada between 1904 and 1916. He published two books on the homes: Craftsman Homes (1909) and More Craftsman Homes (1912). He ran a home building company in the New York metro area and built at least 18 homes from his custom designs. His firm had an Architectural Department. He published a Magazine called The Craftsman. He was FAR more than a furniture builder. @@Art-is-craft
