The Gamble house one of my all time favorites homes. Now when I am driving to a job I see warts everywhere growing out of the landscape. This is the effect of the education I have recieved from watching your efforts to educate us. When you rework a drawing or you show some of these earlier homes I breath easier. Also thinking outside the box is a daily occurrence for me as the home owner wants a less costly solution to the issue with out ripping everything apart.

You are doing a great service to the future of building, Brent! There is a reason certain things are 'classic'. The Gamble house is fantastic! We have many similar (some large, others like the smaller one you showed) Craftsman homes in San Diego as well. One thing to note is that a kitchen with fewer upper cupboards works best where the home also has a 'butler's pantry' for storing the fancy dishes, etc. But these houses are not just beautiful and full of historic significance; they make sense in so many ways. We see influences from Japan, India, Spain, Mexico, and Italy in many of the older homes here. Things like windows that open to create a cross breeze, deep porches, patios, and French doors to allow for outdoor living in our warm climate. I always cringe when I see period woodwork of this type that has been painted white. Thank goodness the Gamble house escaped that fate. It would have literally been a crime. Always enjoy your videos that combine the practical with the esthetic.

I was fortunate to live in that area for over thirty years. Ten of those years were within ten miles of the Gamble house and I was able to tour it and many other architecturally significant homes in the area multiple times. I learned more with each visit as my knowledge base and understanding grew. I have seen and recognized the same influences across the county.

I first heard of the Green & Green architectural style on another RU-vid Channel "The Essential Craftsman". In the episode "The Friend Who Revolutionized My Thinking" he goes through the Jordan House (and shop) which was designed and build by Ken Jordan. It was a very inspiring episode and it really drives home that the idea of craftsmanship didn't die a hundred years ago. All it takes is the desire to put part of yourself into the thing you are building and to take the time to educate yourself as you champion on your channel. Scott is a decent human and I think it would be great if you reached out to him to see if you could get a tour of Ken's place. Cheers!

I love to listen to you, Brent. I recently heard a live chat by a really good youtuber. He said he doesn"t want to be preachy, but he thinks he kind of trojan horse's people by being easy going. I would say you advocate your ideas very well without being preachy, which I think I would find difficult, because crappy design upsets me so much. Too bad the world didn't get much chance to see what the Greene's could have done with a scaled down budget, as Wright did transitioning from Prairie to Usonian. One of them did a home for himself around Carmel late in life that was fairly low cost, and it was stunning. It was written up years ago in Architectural Digest The detailing in the "ultimate" bungalows is phenomonel.🙂🙂🙂

This reminds me of a lot of houses where I'm from in Coral Gables, South Miami, and as a little kid/toddler I absolutely hated living there and aside from being a gorgeous city it still is boring as hell. The houses though--especially older ones are truly unique. Nobody builds houses with high quality anymore.

All very good and important points. The best craftspeople don't silo themselves in any design language ever. In the information era, travel isn't so terribly important for ideas generation in my opinion, though a photo or a video still can't quite capture all the everything of a 3D space.

I watch a popular channel called Ghost Town Living where a guy is restoring a ghost town. The towns most significant building, a late 1800's hotel, burned to the ground shortly after he bought it and he's rebuilding it. It's framed and sheathed now but I was thinking it'd be a cool opportunity for you to perhaps reach out and offer some advice or help on some of the finish details like windows, trim, doors, etc... The fact that he's trying to recreate an old building that will fit in with an existing ghost town would seem to make it up your alley and with 1.6 million followers it could be worthwhile for the exposure? Just a thought I had looking at the building in his recent video.

just started digging into family history, and have found my 7th great grandfather, Hans Michael Holt St., helped build/procure funds for Hebron Lutheran Church in Virginia. (...mind blown) . Near and related to it is an old Georgian house called Salubria. Don't know that it would be considered a "master" house, but curious if you are familiar with it?

This is a great house. However, it’s dark as heck. Worse than a Frank Loyd Wright Prairie house. The tour guides bring a flashlight so that you can see the details in the house. I visit the house each year and this past year, they added a light to the staircase so that you don’t break your neck. And this is in sunny SoCal.

Interesting how you mentioned The Fairmount bungalow district consisting as "working man" houses. Yes, there was a time when a working family could afford these homes. Here in Tampa Fl., we have a large historic bungalow district called Hyde Park. A good friend bought a 2-bed bungalow for 150K in the late 80's. He was willing to pay that much because it was in a "historic district." The home had some nice details, but nothing really special. He sold the home in 95 for almost double what he paid for it. Not a bad deal right! Homes on that street now start at $1.5 million and have massive property tax bills to go along with them. The term "working man house" is a thing of the past. These homes are wonderful to look at but require a lot of maintenance and as you know labor is very expensive. It's too bad but that's why these homes went out of favor.

The woodwork is held together with screws. The pegs, etc., are decorative only, they are not functional. Hinged garage doors catch the wind and need strong operators to keep from being unsafe, or broken by high winds. Wood that is exposed to the weather is a maintenance nightmare.
