I love how everyone landed all over the place, it's both comical but also quite accurate of the way those chutes worked for the men jumping out with them in WW2.

Jumper hit it!!! I have 37 jumps when I was in the airborne. Wow they need some more training, Airborne is 2 weeks training before you get to jump 3 weeks in all. We used the old T-10. Those guys hit hard.
@46wireboy
@46wireboy 5 лет назад
I did this from a little Cesna and it was about an hour after meeting the instructor. 3 weeks you say... 3 of us did it on a Saturday. The scariest part was climbing over the fat instructor to get outside and stand on the landing strut. You can't be tugging on any of the frail little plane's bits.

Fair play, Guy Martin does some bonkers stuff. It really does put it into perspective just how bad those parachutes were for the Airborne and paratroopers. You end up where the wind or the parachute took you. I'm guessing that the hole at the top of the parachute is designed to be big enough to bring them person down as quickly as possible because the more time they spend in the air, the more time they can get shot at? but not so big that they come down too fast and brake something.
@AveragePicker
@AveragePicker 5 лет назад
Actually the hole is for stability. The air wants to get out somehow and without the hole that would mean the only escape is over the sides. At its worst it can cause the parachute to fold but it can also just be harder to control and swing around wildly so the hole allows for some escape through the top which just stabilizes it. I don't think there is/was too much concern about keeping soldiers in the air. Obviously you want them on the ground but the US T-10 parachute was designed intentionally to drop slower...well and to snap less...and not fail as often as the T-7.
@Johny40Se7en
@Johny40Se7en 5 лет назад
@@AveragePicker Ah right ok, makes sense. I've seen the Band of Brothers episode when a lot of the Airborne got stuck in trees and so on, proper pain in the ass and at night it was even worse.

Those style 'chutes are similar to the ones that paratroopers have been using for about 50 years or so mate. Only in the last eight or nine years are they different. First on I jumped, the t-10D had ZERO toggles or "control." Pull a good slip opposite the wind, eyes on the horizon, dont reach for the ground because you'll break your legs, land like a sack of bricks. AIRBORNE!
