Because of you, RU-vid now thinks I'm into drums and keeps recommending me drum stuff, when I'm actually just into Australians being extremely enthusiastic about things.
K Zildjians were loved by session musicians in Japan, was prob just used on the kit of the session musicians contracted by Yamaha, Roland, Korg etc. in the early 90s when PCM audio samples were being standardised for ROMpler synths, such as for the Roland SC and JV series
It takes a true expert to dumb a topic down enough for even an absolute amateur to understand these videos. Thanks, Wade. Whilst you may be a nuggetier, your knowledge of drums is amazing
@@pauldeddens5349 you could definitely get some interesting effects out of it. Almost like a bell, I wonder how it'd sound being hit with a softer mallet rather than a drum stick
When I heard the first DXP hit I was like "Y'know, I think these all sound great in their own way, they all have a neat purpose" and then... and then there was more DXP and it wasn't as fun anymore.
the first thing i thought was "that was a bonk" but not the ultra dark cymbals kind of bonk that sound musical, but the "worse than trashcan lid" type of bonk
That steel cymbal has a really nostalgic sound. It takes me back to my first and only drumming experience when i had a crazy 3 minutes of smashing my mom's pots with a spoon when i was 6.
Having previously described cymbals as sounding of varying levels of Filing cabinet, I take all of that back when I heard the DXP which is literally made of Filing cabinet material.
@@snakewithapen5489 This is gonna sound weird, but it literally sounds like cooking an egg with some lovely and warm, soft insulation wrapped around it. It's glorious
When I was in high school I was gifted a DXP drum kit ($50 Facebook marketplace special) and my parents refused to help me buy new cymbals because "mine still worked perfectly fine" when they sounded EXACTLY like that last one. ALL OF THEM. The crash, ride, hi-hats and even the china. I don't know who let DXP get away with such atrocities but man those cymbals and lack of support from my parents got very close to killing drumming for me.
Also every single metal piece on it was rusted to shit, the snare sounded worse than St Anger and almost every single head needed to be replaced just to make them sound even remotely good, but those cymbals man...
Mmmm the unending joys of parents who don't acknowledge they could lack knowledge on a subject and listen to their kids I can't remember exactly when I earned the right for my judgement to be acknowledged as equal, but it was a damn good day when it happened
"Now, _son._ What's wrong with your current cymbals? They still sound like a perfectly good whack to the side of a dumpster and mate what more do you need to make music really?"
Once I had this intro drum kit what had this absolute garbo crash ride made out of paper that actually sounded pretty good as a china, but my drummer played it for like one session and annihilated it lol
Man I actually really like the sound of that egg symbol, honestly sounds like it would fit really well into some kind of dark fantasy game or movie as one of the symbols used in an intense scene.
You could probably take a frying pan, drill a hole in the middle, take off the handle and use _that_ as a cymbal & it would still sound about as good as the steel cymbal.
Dude. That GM design blank sounds REALLY COOL. I wholly understand its not for everyone or everything. But as you said it sounds musical! I could also see it being used for SFX sampling for atmospheric sounds in say a video game. None of the others hit that perfect balance of idk...rainstorm and trashcan? Edit: OH MY GOODNESS. That last one sounds almost like a cheap toy gong!
Not gonna lie, I actually prefer this egg cymbal to a regular one. The sound it makes (especially when played in a jazz style) reminds me of a gentle rain or something. I don't quite know how to describe it but it sounds soothing for a piece of metal you're supposed to hit really hard.
You've realized by now that its not boring (or the channel wouldnt exist), but I really cant stress enough how little the average person knows about this stuff and how interesting it is to learn! Id 100% watch an hour long video by you (or 10 6 min videos) on basically any part of drumkitness or cymbology
for real its also changed the way i listen to music. like i know next to nothing about instruments but after watching these videos ive been picking out specific cymbal noises in songs left and right
To be honest, I don't care about the drums... Criminal I know. I still hecking like it, but I wouldn't care if it was a car, airplane, computer, literally anything. I am learning a bit from these videos, and I keep watching them because of his giddy excited way of showing his cool things on video. Which I now know, are very cool and some way too expensive. But now I know why so expensive. Drums are pretty cool I guess.
I genuinely laughed out loud when you played that DXP Cymbal. I had no idea it was all about the metal used. I also like the sound of the misshapen blank. I think it’s a bit context sensitive but I can see it’s sound working well with industrial music. It’s sustain to me reminds me of white noise being put through a low pass filter. I honestly love this channel and am super excited to see more in the future
i genuinely love the sound of the gm blank. it's like listening to someone play in a rainstorm? like there's this undercurrent of rain on metal after each hit, it's really nice. it feels like something someone who was really into experimental jazz or rock or metal could play with for some really gorgeous faux-ambiance mixed into the track itself.
I was wondering if anyone else heard it! It sounds a lot like a faint rain sound in the background, that thing is awesome! (and shows that any thin sheet of brass can be classified as a musical instrument).
Me too! It reminds me specifically of rain on a metal roof. Probably it’s due to all the bumps and lumps having localised resonance after the main body has finished.
Honestly love the sound of the blank, it has a really great industrial sound, which pairs perfectly with how its looks. That said, I'm really curious if it sounds much different after cleaning it?
Maybe some of the echo will be lost because youre removing some vibration, but the overall sound should be somewhat the same (coming from someone who has never played percussion, but is an acoustic physics enthusiast)
this murky downtuned band irkallian oracle uses this weird ass cymbal, i can’t figure out what it is. try the first track on the album apollyon. maybe someone with more drum/percussion knowledge can tell me what that thing is.
Me, who was once hardly interested in drums: now has a huge knowledge of cymbals and the history of drums etc. Dank, you have a talent for captivating an audience, keep it up!!
Man I love all these weird cymbals you've got! They're fantastic, and honestly I love their unique sounds. May not be the best for normal work, but damn. It gives the music its own personality.
Amazing video!!! I’ve never been able to play the drums in my life, but you have taught me so much knowledge about Cymbals that I will never be able to use!!! It makes me wish I had tight enough rhythm for a drum kit!!! Also the way you always say “Oh nooooooo gUIYSSSSS!!!!” Is genuinely hysterical!
This reminds me of the time when the drummer from Molotov used a literal sheet of tin for a live presentation of a song called Here we Kum. Go look it up, it's amazing.
The sound the "egg" makes sounds exactly like the type of sound we used to hear in the old 80s & 90s video games and that "egg" sounds amazing I love it
As a lifelong percussionist, Boring Time is my favorite. And that thing sounds crazy! edit: AAAHH! *THOSE* THINGS! I wasn't eggspecting any more! edit2: NOOOOO the steel one is evil!
hahahahah yeah this is an accurate summation of this rollercoaster I loved the egg, I feel like you could hear it during like... Battle music in videogames, or movies. The grungy dirty sound is awesome
I could actually imagine these things having a use in stuff like really dirty punk where you might actually WANT to have this sound of kicking an old oil drum
Hey, dude. Just found your channel. I really love your content. It’s awesome to see someone cover the weird and obscure world of drums and there beautiful bronze frisbees. Can believe you’ve only been uploading to RU-vid for about a month. Would’ve never guessed. I hope you continue to grow your channel and community. Because now I’m definitely a fan.
While I never intend on learning to play drums (or any instrument for that matter) I absolutely adore learning about them and exactly what and why they do and are the things they do and are. There's an extra layer added to my appreciation of the art of music when I know what goes into not just the playing of the instruments but the instruments themselves
As someone who's musical realm is predominantly heavier sounds (metalcore, Deathcore, the like) I really really like those dirty tones on the sheet blanks. The raw, Trash-Can sound from the DXP feels like something straight out of St. Anger's wildest sleep paralysis demon type dreams.
here's the gem about these technical "boring times", especially when you're able to present them very clear and simple, it gives non-drum people extra tidbits of conversation points. If us non-drum people were to ever get into a social interaction with a drum person, it'd at least be a good little conversation about how cymbals are made and how we marathon'd a few of your videos and that's a very good way to have a good talk by tickling a topic about someone's personal hobby/passion.
Honestly can't wait for the drum history museum. Watching these videos have gotten me super interested in instruments and I kind of want to learn a lot more.
Once I had found that Zildjian is a real brand and not a placeholder for Guitar Hero found myself in a historical rabbit hole starting with an ottoman alchemist finding this attempt #6347 at alchemical gold has a nice bonk so this might be good enough to present to the sultan, resulting in a family business that stood the test of time
before finding your channel, I never understood the different sounds of cymbals, but... I... I get it... every time you bring out the K dark ride I get excited cause I love how it sounds, and I don't really know _why_ I love how it sounds
that GM design blank unironically sounds amazing to me. it's like someone recorded some light rain and tried to synthesize a cymbal out of it. it'd make some awesome effects or accents if used sparingly
I love how much it sounds like you're listening to these Blank Cymbals from the other end of a very long hallway, they have a very satisfying distance to their sound especially the way it rolls off. The comparison in the bells at 2:17 are unbelievably nice to hear
rip eeeeeepeeceeee... I saw this channel bc I was watching the new garbage time video and getting into drums so I clicked on this video. I already watched 10 vids and it helped me learn a lot about drums!!! thank you dankpods/garbage time/the drum thing! lmao!!!
ngl that 18" masterwork blank crash is one of the best sounding cymbals I've ever heard. Maybe because I'm not a drum guy, maybe I just don't get it, but man! I love that "filthy" sound as you put it!
Knew nothing about drums, but once I saw that title and the style of the thumbnail I knew it was Dankpods. Great to I have another channel to listen to this funny australian dude👍
You took the words right out of my mouth about the sound. It sounds so trashy, but that's sometimes exactly what you're looking for. It carried those notes way better than I was expecting.
I understand pretty much nothing about music but I absolutely love videos like this. For about 6 minutes I feel like a professional which is pretty weird. But at the end of the day, I'm just sitting here like "Yes... metal disc go *ting*... am 100% a music professional" Seriously though, love the content. Keep up the amazing work
Wade man I gotta say, watching your drum vids and talking about cymbals, I find myself focusing on the drums and cymbals in the music I listen to the last few weeks and noticing nuances I never did before. Thanks for teaching us in a hilarious way.
Loved the egg on the basic jazz beat, awesome background "shimmer" that kept up all the way through. Total sense of energy through it. - from a jazz trumpeter who knows jack about drums and it shows
You should make a kit that is all DXP cymbals with a St. Anger snare. Also, steel cymbals can sound good. They just need to be made properly (i.e., not painted to prevent the gong/bonk sound).
Omg this may just be the sound I've been searching for for my next crash cymbal. Never would I have thought it would be an unfinished boy. The jazz boys are gonna love this.
