Gwyn is super unique for a final boss because you hear about him throughout the entire game. Thinking he's this mighty king. Then when you go to fight him he's basically this husk of his former self, a fallen god. It's actually kinda sad. I had a lot of fun watching this series, I can't wait for DS2!
Also, when you think of a final boss, you expect an epic, triumphant sounding song to go along with the fight, but not in this case. Gwyn is very unique in that the song is super sad and depressing because of exactly what you said: he's a husk, his goals are out of his reach and dark will eventually come upon his world. The type of storytelling that truly made me appreciate this series.
Yes, the underwhelming of Gwyn as the final boss is pretty much the idea here. The music is different to accentuate this feeling of tiredness and misery.
Remember Gwyn’s music… I can’t say anything more about that, just remember it on your journey through the Souls games. I always loved it, it gave a sense of sadness to what the player is expecting to be this massive super epic fight. Instead you fight a broken God that no longer has any sense of himself, just a husk empowered by the flame to protect it.
I think if dark souls was ANYTHING but a video game, i think society would think the World building is amazing and deserves a spot right up next to Lord of the rings and dune as some of the best fictional worlds ever made

This mythic figure, purported to be the most influenetial being in his era being reduced to a lifeless shell is a fine encapsulation of the world that Fromsoftware has created.
Dark Souls 2 tip: You don't find illusionary walls by hitting them with your weapon. You have to walk up to the suspected wall and press the 'Interact' button. The same button you would use to open a chest.
People are saying the song is composed on the white keys of the piano because it fits Gwyn better, but that's delving into the lore of the boss and his motives. Gwyn means 'white' in the welsh language, and for someone trying to cling to his age of fire, rebelling against the next age of dark that he knows will follow and undo everything he worked to build, it makes sense that his theme contains no black keys, and no instances of dark. He saw first hand what dark could do, how it poisoned the township of Oolacile, what it did to his best knight Artorius whom he sent to deal with the problem, and he's terrified of what is to come. Likely a request by Hidetaka Miyazaki to the composer Motoi Sakuraba, who took the challenge and produced arguably the greatest boss theme of all time.
@@90piterr But they are linked, and here's the problem with an age of dark, as Gwyn saw it; Oolacile was consumed by dark when the township disturbed Manus' grave, and when one has too much of the dark soul, they can be corrupted/consumed by it. Manus was so corrupted by dark that it erupted from his grave, creating the abyss and consuming the township. Now imagine an age of dark is allowed to happen... how long do you think the world has before the constant need for power causes another such incident? And what happens when there's no one around whose powerful enough to stop it from spreading... the age of fire fades, the Gods abandon Lordran, or what's left. Gwyn was rightly terrified of dark because it had a will of its own, and an age of dark has further reaching implications than simply an age of humanity. Such beings cannot be trusted.
Two things can be true at the same time. DS2 is a good game....DS2 is the worst game of the franchise. Just remember the main game is the main game and the 3 DLC are S-tier. A-tier at worst.
I honestly think that if it wasn’t released as a Dark Souls game and automatically stacked directly against the other FS games, it would be held in a much higher regard
One last cool thing about DS1. There is another ending. If you don't talk to Frampt you can meet another toothy snake guy named Kaathe in the abyss after defeating the Four Kings. He explains how Frampt is basically manipulating the chosen undead into sacrificing themselves and preserving the age of fire. You can walk out of the Kiln after defeating Gwynn to become the Lord of the new age of Dark.
I’m excited for dark souls 2, I never have really understood the hate with it personally, I see that it can have some ganky enemies but I really never had a bad experience with it. Excited to see your experience. :)
I hear a lot of people hate the Scholar version, but it's like... guys, the problems with this game are built into the core systems and mechanics, and bug issues that NEVER got fixed no matter what version you played. It won't matter which one he plays, he's gonna experience the same game "jank" in the gameplay in either of them. Dark Souls II is a busted, mess of a game and there's no amount of polishing that turd to make it smell any less bad. Let's just enjoy the "experience" of it together and then move onto better entries in the series. Interestingly, Patches isn't in Dark Souls II. The final battle of Souls games tend to be more somber than epic. Solaire is the canon ending, so his armor is appropriate XD Once again, the runbacks in Dark Souls II... they're gonna break you. In fact, I want you to realize how fondly you will remember these runbacks by comparison XD Gwyn is one of my favorite bosses, shame it was so annoying for you. I think you might change your mind by the time you get through the rest of the series.

@@mycity7590 I liked how big the game was, seeing the raining manor with the elephant knightd was cool af, tower of heide early one, majula, the petrified keys, the many tone shifts, the cool magic, the rat covenant, being able to fight bosses again and get loot again. That kinda stuff. It became a super fun coop game for me
Honestly, I hated DS2. Up until recently where I came back to it. I’m in the DLC now and it gets way better but harder. I dunno. It’s definitely worth playing but I think, you’ll love DS3 afterwards. If that’s what you play after.
It's sad to see the series end, but it's gotta end somewhere. Was a pleasure to re-experience this great game from a new perspective. Even the perspective of experiencing Gwyn's absolutely atrocious runback, we all had to do it before we discovered parrying him! Very excited for DS2! It's my personal favourite in the trilogy, but it's very much the misunderstood middle child of all the FromSoftware games. It's very different from the others you've played, even DS1 in terms of how the game feels. There's also a lot more bosses in DS2, and some are hidden, some need to be backtracked to etc. A friendly tip for DS2: levelling ADP is important! Equip load only really affects roll distance in DS2, not i-frames, and it's ADP you want if you want to improve roll i-frames! Also remember, having a few lifegems can be a lifeSAVER if you run out of estus, and a relatively early merchant can sell infinite lifegems for the whole game.
i don't want to discourage you but dark souls 2 does indeed have some of the worst runbacks in fromsoft games ... And also most of the time the bosses are as bad as the runbacks (sometimes the runbacks are more bs than the bosses). Also thank you for doing such a fantastic playthrough of my favorite game, I haven't enjoyed watching someone play a game this much in a while

This game has a lot of themes about self-preservation of oneself and your kind. Even in the face of an inevitable destruction, people will fight for what and who they love, even if that comes with sacrifices and even atrocities. In the opening cutscene of the game, it talks about the age of ancients which was the age of dragons. Suddenly, fire appeared and lord soul's were within them - this signaled the end of the dragons and beginning of the age of fire (time of lords). The dragons didn't accept their fate, they fought to stay the apex predators. Cut to when the game takes place, the end of the age of fire is near, and the age of dark will soon begin - the age of dark is supposed to be the age of man, but the lord's are also not accepting the natural order and fighting to preserve their own. You got the ending where you sacrificed yourself to keep the age of lords going, essentially, keeping humans as second-class citizens to the lord's. For me, the bittersweet ending is choosing the age of dark and beginning the age of man. If you ever replay this game, shoot for that one.
just wanna warn you now on ds 2. there are no s in the beginning of opening a door animation. like in all other souls games. and some runbacks have a lot of enemies chasing you. so you can't always just run straight for the boss as the enemies will hit you out of the door animation

Dude really brute forced through the entire game lmao, didn't learn anything, made the same mistakes the whole playthrough, made things way more difficult to himself than they were supposed to, kinda impressive ngl
I will never forget the feeling I had the first time I ever beat this game. I felt so proud of myself, so unbelievably good. Then I “lit” the final bonfire, got the infamous cutscene of “why am I on fire” and then the credits rolled. When the credits rolled, I can’t describe it, but it was like everything I had just gone through came rushing back to me, and it dawned on me. It was over. I was never going to feel this way again. And I cried. Thank god I was proven wrong when dark souls 3 came out. Also, I get why it happened, but it sucks that Solaire didn’t survive, you can summon him for the Gwyn fight. Very useful if you can’t (or didn’t want to learn how to) parry.
Matias, DS2 does have issues but DS1 is also a jankfilled fartfest and I love them both. People seem to forget the second half of DS1 exists, but honestly you will enjoy DS2 a lot if you let yourself have an open mind. The thing about that game, is that you don't get to go STRENGTH PANCAKE mode as much, you SERIOUSLY have to use the tools given to you and I think that lends it to feel much more like a true ADVENTURE ! You can get very, very strong super easily in DS2, the only thing I can tell you is level ADP (it's tied to your roll's i-frames, and I think an 'agility' stat of 102 is equal to normal fast rolls.) and to be VERY vigilant with your camera. There are many places where the game will just give you enough titanite to level your weapon like 5 times.
Not really that surprising... it's not like you're going to START with DS2 over DS1. =P It's like if Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was a choice. No one is going to pick that. But once you watch Indy 1, then sure, there'll be a lot of pressure to continue right on through even if most people think Last Crusade is better. Anyway, all you "need" to know is ADP affects your rolling frames. It improves rapidly with even just minor investment. That people didn't know that on release set people in a bad mood. Just look up "frames DS1 chart" and look at the green and red image thing and that should give you an idea of what's happening between games since DS1, 2 and 3 all do this very differently for such a core mechanic as rolling. It has some other issues, but it's not like Crystal Cave and Lost Izalith don't exist. And then you're starting with SotFS, which is more or less meant to be played as a "different version" for people that already played it. Like a not particularly well done fan mod. Good luck. =P If you already bought it, go ahead. But you can't just get plain DS2 bundled with the DLCs?
I immensely enjoyed watching you accomplish your first playthrough of DS1, my first souls like game. Just to let you know about DS2, there are 2 versions of the game, "vanilla DS2" (original release), and Scholar of the First Sin (SotFS, rerelease on next-gen consoles with all DLC). There are significant gameplay changes to DS2 in SotFS, one of the most notable being modified enemy locations, which contribute to more gank squads. I see vanilla DS2 as more accessible to a first playthrough, while SotFS is like a challenge mode version. But otherwise, it is your call on which version you pick in the end.
Quick advice to before you do Dark Souls 2.... it's rather....em... "different" I guess is the word... compare to Dark Souls 3....you may not notice it at first but as you more play it beguns to be more noticable... Not saying it's bad per say.... but most people didn't liked it.

Also on the topic of Dark Souls 2, it's very different with movement, weapon durability is fucked, invicibility frames are tied to adaptability (level that before anything else or the game is unplayable), and it just doesn't have the polish in design, level design, boss lore, story, etc... as the other two in the series because Miyazaki was busy with Bloodborne at the time. But it still slaps once you get used to it, and it has some of the best DLC in the series (excluding horsefuck valley... you'll see what I mean).

I played DS2 many times and enjoyed a lot even getting annoyed at places. That is part of souls journey. There are ppl waste more time complaining instead of finding other ways. Do not worry.. U will enjoy a lot. Also, starting Sekiro last is better as it will totally require u to change ur play style which will be best after finishing full DS series. It has one of the best DLCs yet.
Congrats Mati, I'm watching this as I'm typing this. While I did vote for Dark Souls 3 I'm excited to watch you play Dark Souls 2. I just finished my replay of Dark Souls 1 earlier this week and it was fun revisiting this game after spending the past year playing Elden Ring. It still holds up well today and I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I and many others have. Hopefully soon we'll get a tier-list of each of the bosses and what you think of them, just a suggestion. Cheers Edit: My first time playing I struggled with him for a good bit until I accidentally realized you could parry Gwyn, after that he became much easier, which I feel is the point. He sacrificed himself to continue the age of fire, and has become so weak as a result he can be parried, which you can't do with any other boss in the game.
Ds2 has a very warm place in my heart it's where I learned darksouls pvp. A tip I would give you is try and beat every boss, a few of these bosses can only be fought after a quest line is over and some of them only activate after you attack an "npc" a lot of people I've seen play ds2 just focus on finishing the game and miss a few really fun bosses to fight if fun is your goal I'd aim for every boss beaten. Either way hope you enjoy it
In my opinion DS1 is better than bloodborne. I feel like DS1 has better lore and level design and I think most of you agree that the first half of the game is THE BEST fromsoft has done. Bloodborne has the better combat and bosses even though DS3 and sekiro have the best bosses overall.
Yo Mati. DS2 is definitely the worst, but regardless, I think it has more character than DS3 so I come back to it more often. Definitely excited! Scholar of the First Sin is the polished edition of DS2, with DLC included, so definitely the right choice! Also, most people think you should play the souls games in order, judging from the poll, regardless of quality. This makes sense, as DS3 takes some stuff from DS2.

Hey Matias, I'd like to recommend you to watch the video about Dark souls from the Matthewmatosis channel. I'm not asking you to react to the video because it lasts 6 fucking hours but listening to it while you do something else is recommended because it's one of the best comments about this game, in the video he talks about various aspects such as the lore, the story, the npcs, the level design, the graphics, the hitboxes, the changes with respect to demons souls and a huge amount of other very interesting things.
Yo Mati just so you know, quitting the game and loading back in also progresses NPC quests and such. So you can do that instead of resting at a bonfire.
I honestly like that DS2 is the next one. Is not my favorite game, altough it still is a good game. If the community had picked DS3 as the next game it would have erased the nostalgia that this game is packed with.
Most of this video is whining about the runback. It sucks that you ruined this boss for yourself with the attitude, because the runback isnt a big deal and the music and the boss himself more than make up for it, but everybodys different i suppose and some people look at a work of art and see a paint spill.

You could have healed a lot easier, if you would have used the rock formations in the arena to temporarily cover you for a moment. In Souls games, always look for your surroundings and how they might help you. Arguably, you could make a point that cover in videogame fights is a thing and that the intelligence of any enemy in all or almost all videogames is so bad, that using cover often is all you need to overcome a difficult situation. Either you got the reflexes and skill, or the brains 🙂
I think after elden ring and bloodborne being the two end game beloved games people wanted you to go to the beginning. Dark Souls 2 is the straight sequel so it makes sense to go release order from here. Tho i think all options are good from here for different reasons, demons souls should be last imo

In case you didn't see my comment under another video... "Heads up about dark souls 2. There are 2 versions. Original and Scholar of first sin. Scholar was ment to be more "challenging", however a challenge is often achieved by adding bullshit amount of enemies. Some could argue that original is a better experience. However Scholar of first sin includes all the dlc, while with original you would have to buy them separately. Also if you will be playing on pc and keyboard and mouse, be aware that there are double click bug, so you should check it out how to fix it, it is fine if you play on gamepad though. Edit. It seems there is bundle on steam where you can get original with all dlc for the same price as Scholar."
I've played this game a ton of times, but damn I've never seen half of the dialogue before! That moment with the giant blacksmith in the last episode was like the most heartwarming video game moment ever
Speaking purely on ds2, my first time playing all the way through it, I had several problems with it and towards the end of was ready for it to be over. However, a few months later I fully played it again and I enjoyed every second of it, even putting it up there with ds1 and ds3. It's crazy what giving a game a second chance/try can do. I love the heck out of ds2.

Some people say Dark Souls 2 is a bad Souls game. But after I played all 3 games, I think Dark Souls 2 has a different and more complex mechanics than Dark Souls 1 and is not as fast and Casual like Dark Souls 3 . in my opinion It's a good Souls game And suitable for those who have enough experience with souls game.
How is DS3 more casual? It has the much tougher individual enemies and bosses by a mile. Unlike DS2 which doesn't have a single enemy/boss that's individually tough. DS2's idea of a challenge is throwing 10 or more enemies at you in an enclosed spaced area when they can literally clip through each other with their attacks. It's not a tough game. It's lazily designed and it's the main reason why it gets the hate it rightfully deserves.
