Why haven't I heard this before? This is a major 20th Century cello composition. Yes, it's derivative of Bartok, but it stands on its own. I love Ligeti AND Bartok. The first movement brought me to tears!

Interesting and comparatively accessible work by the composer, renowned and revered for his avant-grade composition. Tonal language like this is common in early works of such composers, and sometimes a style they return to in the autumn of their careers.

Actually several of his works are rather approachable in my opinion, such as his Musica Ricercata (used in Kubrik's Eyes Wide Shut), and his Requiem (in Kubrik's 2001).

The only one who might cry to this piece is the poor cellist playing it. I'm no cellist myself so correct me if I'm wrong but some of these techniques seem really carpal-tunnel inducing.
